Journey's US Chart Position

Postby Greg » Fri Oct 14, 2005 10:44 pm

According to Andrew's report, Journey's Generations album charted on the US Charts at #170. I suppose that isn't too bad, but I'm wondering if Generations will climb into the top 100 before it's all said and done?

Speaking of charting, I think Bon Jovi's new album charted around something like #17 on Billboard. You know what would help Journey is to tour with Bon Jovi!

Greg,
I would LOVE that tour!!!!
Bon Jovi is promoting the hell out of their new CD, with both television commercials and radio ads. Now tell me, WHY doesn't Journey do this??? It makes absolutely NO sense to me!!!!

BTW...when you get the DeLorean set to the 1980s, let me know...I could use a California Wine Cooler!

I disagree, Journey plays before plenty of fans on their own, the problem is promotion of the album, not live exposure. I would consider it an insult for Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain to open for musicians the caliber of those in BJ. Although I think Richie Sambora is a fine guitarist and singer. JBJ probably has a bigger ego than Perry did, thats the impression I get.
Also, Generations blows BJ's new one away. I can hardly listen to HAND, hype is what's selling this dud. Their previous two had to grow on me, but there's nothing about the new one that makes me want to give it a chance.
I think its hurt by Richie having less influence in the writing.
As for Generations, sales are undoubtedly hurt by the giveaways, but its more about getting the new music out there and having people recognize it on upcoming tours imo. Touring is where the $ is, and Journey seems to be doing great on their own.

Greggie-

I want you to check yourself into drug testing, TODAY. NO WAY does Journey open for inferior bands..

If they did, I would never listen to them again.

NMT, I disagree. I have the new BJ CD, and it is their best work in a long time. MUCH better than the last two. There is a song called Last Man Standing that would be a HUGE hit if not for the subject matter, which is the sorry state of today's music. If this was a single they would piss a lot of people off, but the song has fantastic lyrics and is just a classic tune.

Yes, they are hyping the hell out of it, but don't get down on them for that. They are smart for playing the gme the right way, that's all.

I felt like there were quite a few songs that I just thought were silly, with childish lyrics. I noticed JBJ had written quite a bit with people other than Richie. I also have not cared much for Jon's voice the last several years, he seems whiney to me lately. I am a fan of Richie however and would like BJ better with him as the vocalist, I'm sure I'm part of a very small minority here. I appreciate your comments and will give it another try.

Journey and Bon Jovi CO-Headlining Tour!!

"Generations" will not climb unless the single starts getting airplay. Otherwise, this sales spike is simply "us die-hard fans" that wanted an official copy even though we already have the giveaway.

NIG, NMT is right on the money..This isn't that hard to fugure out..

BJ is getting it done by 1) getting good publicity, and making publicity(giving Oprah a Million dollar check for Katrina). And 2) putting a good CD...

Journey has had ZERO push..Simple as that. I have both CD's, and honestly, Generations is better than BJ...

While I would like a Journey/BJ tour, I KNOW Journey is better live because I have seen both. BJ is great..Journey is off the charts. Journey could make a lot of new fans with that tour..However, there are alot of hot girls who go just to see Richie and Jon....Journey HAD those types...now, um, oh forget it..

LOL! Journey wouldn't have to be the one opening for Bon Jovi, it could be the other way around! :P

Or just a concert where both bands have equal playing time - 2 hours for Journey, 2 hours for Bon Jovi...I could handle that! I'm just thinking from this stand point that since Bon Jovi has had a great push for this album, and that it appears alot more have bought the BJ album as opposed to the Journey album (not counting the giveaways of course,) that those same people who go to see Bon Jovi could hear what Journey has to offer! And when Journey blows the socks off of them peforming live, record sales would go up for Journey because they A) touring with a band who is getting alot of exposure with their album B) people, who would otherwise not take time out to hear what Journey has to offer, would get to hear the stuff, new stuff live and would want to buy the album.

It is not that far-fetched. It was actually rumored a couple years ago that Journey were trying to get on with Bon Jovi or Toto for an overseas tour! That is EXACTLY where it would work the best. Start on a European leg as a straight opener. With Journey's track record over there they really can't command a full headline tour yet. Then, when the tour hits the States they could go to an equal playing time alternating closing. If Journey could keep their ego in check and suck it up, they could be unstoppable. But that may require taking a step back for the right tour!

This is an interesting idea. I think it would be good exposure for the band to be on the bill with Bon Jovi, but I don't think JbJ would ever let it happen unless Bon Jovi had top billing. Maybe not even then because even though his band is great, he isn't much of a singer. He's a celebrity rock star with a huge ego who's trying to reestablish his rock credibilty and he might not like the competition. He did an impromptu duet with Steve Perry once, but that was a feather in Bon Jovi's cap because Steve was the bigger star at the time. It was just a sort of "cameo appearance" and they weren't doing a Journey song. He might see it as a sort of "battle of the bands" now and feel insecure about it.

Greggie, I do get what you are saying..

You are saying let BJ do all the advertising, promotions and other things..Journey gets hitched to the tour, and blows away everyone with their live performance. Sounds brilliant actually.

If they did do that tour, my guess or my opinion would be to play hits..straight through....Dirty dozen and 12 pack of "B's...songs that are known, but weren't huge. Like, Send her My Love, After the Fall, Still they Ride, Message of Love, If He should break your heart, and maybe Mother father, Higher Place, and maybe Girl Can't help it...stuff like that.. I don't think they could do a jam session like this tour..They would lose the crowd....However, if they played their Knowns and hits, there would be slowdown.

If they are reading this, I'll say this:

You should have never released Generations on a label. You should have stuck to the plan and released it on your own, and on your website. Everything was geared to this CD being given away free at concerts...a label release looks silly following that. Generations will be the worst charting and selling album in Journey history. That is not because of 'bad promotion', or bad music...it is because the entire package was put together assuming the album was NOT going to be released on a label.

Monker is 100% correct.

The Generations CD is their best CD in 20 years, easily..That is not due to homerism or personal preference..That is truth..It is a shame the band is being led blind by a unsightful manager...

Azoff MGT, you should do the great band justice....and do something..anything!

And "Generations" debuted at #170?? In the words of Gomez Addams: "Has the planet gone mad"??

It saddens me that Journey's management and label could have dropped the ball this badly. As far as I know, there has been no major press for this release. Heck, I wouldn't have known about it if I wasn't a regular visitor to this site.

I bought and downloaded the album through iTunes, but I had to go looking for it. Bon Jovi's HAND was on the front page of the music store since its release. But the new Journey CD was not mentioned at all.

How can Azoff have a band this popular and this talented and do nothing to let people know they're still making great music?

Sorry for the rant. I'm just constantly bewildered by the Music industry, today. Especially in the US.

You know, I feel that both the band and Sanctuary knew going into this deal that a chart debut of lower top 200 would happen. They had to have factored in the giveaway siphining off some counter sales. There's no way Kalodner and JRNY did not go into this official release with eyes wide open, so it was probably something like "look we at Sanctuary will pick this album up and get it onto shelves nationwide. We help out a little with pushing airplay but given the fact that you gave these away already, we can't guarantee a lot of promo budget." I think the band and Sanctuary will both be content with the sales.
