Other than you guys who are in tribute bands, has anybody else ever performed a Journey song for a talent show, work function, etc? I was thinking about it the other day, and I had almost forgotten that I had performed a Journey song for a talent show in my last job. The special occasion escapes my mind, but for some reason, we decided to put on a talent show for the employees. I went through so many songs, trying to find something that would not only be cool to sing, but something that I COULD sing, LOL!

So, as it goes, I was supposed to sing two songs for this talent show and I picked "All The Way" off of Journey's Arrival album, and "While There's Still Time" from the last Styx album with Dennis DeYoung. Okay, honestly, on "All The Way," I only messed up in one place. The high part after the short musical interlude was kind of tough for me. Believe or not, I actually sang that part just a bit too high. I had nailed that song so many times in practice, but I suppose getting infront of people makes me a tad bit nervous.

On the second song, The Styx song, I nailed it perfectly. Actually, some of the employees (who knew the band Styx) came up to me after the talent show and said I sounded just like "THAT GUY" from Styx. LOL.....I wished I still had the tape of that, but I would probably be way too critical over hearing it....LOL!

Looks like this year I have been drafted to sing at my company's Christmas Party. This time, I'm picking Jingle Bells, LOL!!!

Somedays I can nail the notes, some days I can't.
Warming up is vital.

I don't want to harp on the Karaoke thing, but it's very humbling attempting to sing "Ask The Lonely" with my voice....

Even Augeri has struggled with the tail end of "Ask the Lonely." When he first started with Journey he would really butcher it at the end. Perry didn't make it sound all that hot live, either
-it's a challenging tune.
You should feel proud.

I have certainly found singing Augeri fronted songs are a little easier for me than songs fronted by Perry. Of course, TBF songs are a little easier to sing than earlier stuff - but it's still very difficult to match anything Perry does.

I used to play DSB, WITS, AWYWI and Separate Ways in my old band. Those are pretty easy guitar songs.

I think if I am asked to sing something besides a Christmas song, I should pick a Kansas song. Most of those are a little easier to sing. Dust In The Wind is always a shoe in for me....even the "high" part before the violin solo.

well, they are all fairly repetitive. However SW has a tough speedy solo.

I've been playing live gigs professionally since 1989. Ive sang Lights, Stay Awhile, Faithfully, Seperate Ways, Send Her My Love. Recently have sang again Faithfully, Don't Stop Believin, Lights and last week we did Anyway You Want It. I think the best memory was singing Lights to this very attractive six foot tall chick....on a cruise ship I was playing on with a band. She got up on the piano and I sang it to her on 11 Sept, 1993. We ended up going out and having a nice love affair, although that soon ended. Funny enough, I was just thinking about her. It's funny how we get older and our tastes change. She's not even my type now.

I love playing MF. I used to have a book with a lot of Journey tabs in it. That's how I learned that one.

However, it was an "audience participation" kind of thing, and I was up against people who brought, like, FIFTY PEOPLE with them.

Not to mention that everyone ELSE was about 15 years younger than me....I was 34 at the time; it was 2001, which was not the best time of my life...

So I'm up there singing my heart out, and all these teenagers are looking at me like,

"HAH?!"

So nope.....didn't win.....didn't even PLACE....

Hey I don't care....4 years later, I'm married to a professional musician, writing music, and releasing a CD.....so LIFE IS GOOD!

I have never been in a Journey tribute band, but I've been in bands that have performed Journey songs. I have personally sung "Lights," "Wheel in the Sky," "Lovin', Touchin, Squeezin'" and "Faithfully" while playing drums and yes, I've hit the high notes. Fun stuff and I enjoyed it.

I was just listening to Essential Journey today. Great memories. When You Love a Woman is probably my current favorite on that CD set.

Geez I think I'm losing it. How could I leave this song out of my list. On my cruise ship gig I made my own sequence for (electronic backing tracks, except for the piano and guitars) it not long after the album was out and sang it from about 96-2001. It was great fun. One of the easier Perry songs to sing. There are high notes in it, but not as ball busting as some of the other ones I've done.

Sounds like both you and John have a ball and actually HIT the high notes Fred...kudos!!!!

I have fun but my voice cracks like cheap porcelain at a yard sale when I attempt the high notes...Peter Brady style!

For the longest time, I have been using a number of vocal exercise CDs. My favorite one is the multi-CD set by Billy Purnell. The exercises allow you to not only stretch your range, but increase the power of through the "passagio" which is what happens when your voice "cracks." There's a way to sing powerfully and effectively with much less effort. Wish I'd known that years ago. Oh well.
