I learned of it through VH1's Behind the Music.
Journey must've been touring for a few years w/ Augeri by then, but I'll be damned if I knew.
Your turn.

Journey came through here on the Vacation's Over Tour. I did not hear about the first leg that hit Colorado Springs, but they came through to Red Rocks later. Red Rocks is a GREAT place to see a band play, and OMG IS THAT JOURNEY?? Hell yeah, I was going. But....That's right, I was extremely conflicted to hear about a new guy. I was so unsure, but I decided that it was better to see for myself before passing judgement. I went to the show and I had a great time. Steve was very tentative onstage. It took him almost half the show to start looking comfortable. He struggled hear and there, but it did not detract from the great time I was having with the music. That is when I realized that there really was more to "this thing" than just Perry.

Read in Entertainment Weekly, a little note saying along the lines "the wheel in the sky as stopped turning for Steve Perry, as he re[aced in Journey before the release of their new single for the movie Armageddon"
It answered my question of why no tour after TBF-ERIC

My daughter heard on the radio that there would be no Journey tour for TBF because Steve Perry had some kind of injury and that the band was replacing him with some guy whose name was similar.
I didn't believe it until I came online for the first time in the late '90s and started looking for info about Steve Perry.

Learned about it from the Journey Digest that I used to receive through email.

I think a friend told me. I don't remember. I just remember being blown away by how great Augie sounded when I saw them live in 1999.

I learned that Journey would continue with a new singer on local radio probably in May of 98. I knew that it would still be Journey as long as Neal and Jon were there, being more a fan of Journey's musical sound than of Perry. My wife however, was very upset about Perry being out, thinking he couldn't be replaced. She is now a former Perry fan and a big Augeri fan. I saw them in August 98 in Louisville, KY. I think that was maybe their first US show after they came back from Japan.

Hmmm. The "new guy". Which one are you talking about? How did I find out Jonathan was in the band? Or Steve Smith or Randy Jackson? Or Deen or are you talking about Perry? The only ones who aren't new guys are Ross and Neal.

I was looking for info on Journey and came across Steve Lake's Journey Tribute page. And then I heard they were coming to Colorado Springs on the first leg of the Vacations Over Tour. I was very apprehensive of seeing Journey without Perry, but being a more of a fan of the band than just Perry I was willing to give it a shot. I remember being quite impressed with Augeri from the get-go, but what left a greater impression is that for the first time in 18 yrs, they played, Just The Same Way and then a small medley of songs from the pre-Perry era. I remember walking out of the concert in awe and I told my wife, if Perry is the reason that this band has dropped so much of their history and now without him they are reintroducing such things back into the show then the hell with him.

I heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend, listened to Augeri on BTM and heard him on the radio for a week or two with songs from Arrival and told myself, "No way." I still say. "No way." To me, Journey was Steve Perry but I'm very happy for all of the fans who are happy with the status quo. Augeri is a fine vocalist and his fans are happy with Journey now and love the new material that is out so win a few and lose a few. We all have what we want and can't help the way we feel. We should be happy!

Is the last line meant to be a Perry solo song pun?

I do think that would be an interesting subject. So how did those of you who were fans before Escape find out that Gregg was out and how did you feel about it? How did you accept the new sound of Escape?

Oh, jeez, please refrain from your pessimistic, psycho-projection and just admit your question is entirely unclear. why don't you?! Thank you.

Funny,
NOBODY else had any problem deciphering the intent of my post. You're just being subversive (as usual). Augeri (although having been a full fledged member of the band for 8 years) is still routinely referred to by casual audiences and critics alike as "the new guy". That is why I put the term "new guy" in quotations, because, as we here know, contrary to general perception, Augeri really isn't that "new" .
But, I'm wasting my breath.....
You knew all this already and are just yanking the forum's collective crank for a cheap mid-afternoon thrill.
Buzz off.

Barb, once you read the rest of TNC's post it was completely clear who the question was referring to!

Of course it was.
Her supercilious attitude might have been warranted, if not for the fact that I specifically mention Augeri by name in the opening thread.
Clearly she read the thread title, misconstrued it to be against the band, and immediately went on the warpath.
Lumbering, blind, old bitty.
She needs to go back to BT and stay there.

Hmmmm.... can't recall the *exact* place... probably here (when the name of the site was something other than "Melodicrock.com" -- dang if I can remember now) as I wasn't subbed to the Journey Digest at the time. Maybe Steve Lake's site... maybe one of the fan-supported message boards that were around at the time (including the one that eventually became Back Talk..)... by that point in time there'd been so much speculation and rumor going around that it was nice to have some REAL information. I DO remember getting an official press release from Sony Music when all was said and done, but that came at least several days if not WEEKS after the word had spread that Perry was truly out. I DO remember it was around March/April '98 as I'd seen Jonathan perform a solo gig in March and he signed the back of my ticket "Journey '98", which got me wondering even more (especially as he and Neal made several public appearances in the Bay Area around that time and that piqued some interest.) Hell, I even remember emailing Andrew and asking if he was *sure* about one of his sources that said Journey was recording a new song ("Remember Me") on a particular date because Neal had a gig scheduled for the same day!

I believe I saw it first on the VH1 show
"Where Are They Now?" - it was an obvious "segway" from what happened to Steve Perry (a "SKIING ACCIDENT"?!

- that's what was actually reported) to how Journey recorded a song for the "Armageddon" soundtrack:
....the last 5 seconds featured a performance clip of "Remember Me".....
....and I distinctly remember an "uh-oh" feeling in my stomach upon seeing Steve A....

Great feedback everyone.
Sngrchk-That reminds me of an episode of the now cancelled VH1 series "Pop-up video". They were playing a vintage Perry/Journey video and one of the random pop-ups was a clip of Augeri adorned in red leathers, doing his fruity shuffle and in general, doing his best attempt at a culture club impression. In big bold letters the pop-up spelled out
"NOT STEVE PERRY."
At first I laughed, then upon realizing what I had just seen, u can bet I got pissed.

Slow day at the strip-mall law office, huh?
Even the always non-partial Dave said you were clearly in the wrong here.
The correct response would be to admit your errors, apologise and politely bow the hell out out of this thread.

Thank you for your words of wisdom about what is "correct". Maybe the "correct" thing would be to acknowledge that Steve Augeri is not a "new guy" and hasn't been for several years--but you feel the need to perpetuate that concept for some reason. No, of course, not--you were just making conversation, I'm sure. What's that noble cause again?
