BEHIND THE SONGS

Postby r@y » Thu Dec 01, 2005 5:09 pm

I must apologise if there has been a thread like this before, but i have always been curious to how a particular song was conceived.

So does anyone here know of the 'story' behind Journey songs..? Which of the songs that are personal reflections of the band members..

Let me start with what I ( and maybe many of you out there ) know :

SEPARATE WAYS (WORLDS APART )

SP mentioned that this song was written around the time when Ross and Neal were going thru 'messy and expensive' divorces. SP said ' something good has to come out of this' and wrote this song with JC.

WHEN I THINK OF YOU

In a recent Q & A, SP mentioned that he wrote this song ( together with JC ) after a dream he had about his late mother. The line 'young and so free ' was describing how his mother looked in his dream compared to how whe was during her last days. (which if I am not wrong was circa ROR sessions..? )

That's for now...I know a few more song stories...but just can't recall right now..maybe later....

Anyone else..?

Cheers.

There's tons of these stories.

Patiently was written in a downtown Denver hotel in 5 minutes...

Lights was written on top of the Hollywood Hills in SoCal..

Send Her My Love was written by P +J in a cafe...it goes on and on.

Maybe you can ask TNC where "Believe" was conceived and written....he would know for sure.

Please don't get him started on that song!

I wonder what the story is behind the writing of Mother, Father...?

This thread reminds me of the SNL "Storytellers" skit with Neil Diamond. Will Ferrell, of course, played Neil and was giving an intro to each song, Here's an excerpt:

Yeah, well, we were driving down this dark road, and I hit a kid. [ the crowd is stunned ] So, we got out, and sure enough he was dead. So, we just took off. Pretty fast. And, two hours later, I wrote "Sweet Caroline". Sweet Caroline. Good times never seemed so good. Thank you.

[ crowd struggles to applaud, still stunned by the story ]

If Lights was written in the Hollywood Hills, I find it amusing that Perry always said "we wrote a song about our hometown...San Francisco" and no one picked up on it. [He wrote it before he was in the band, correct? Or at least had most of it written.

I want to know whose ex inspired "Back Talk" - the song, that is.

I guess when Steve brought the song to the band and they changed it from "sun shines on LA" to "sun shines on the bay" it made it about their hometown.

I've wondered that about Back Talk too.

I've always wondered if they just ran out of ideas and said, "Hey - let's just have Steve rant his way thru this - who cares?"

 You know, that's entirely possible too, but I wonder who was in his mind that he was ranting at.

I always think of 'someone's problem child' when I listen to Back Talk.

This is pretty interesting: Cribbed from the "Time 3 Box Set" booklet:

"MOTHER, FATHER(N.Schon-S.Perry-J.Cain-M.Schon) From "Escape"

A composite of two tapes, one by Neal Schon and one by Steve Perry, this dramatic piece, with the first interlude by Neal Schon's father, was later completed by Cain and Perry."

"Problem Child?" Should that not be, "Troubled Child?"

Oh man I need to go to bed.
