From Soundscan for USA retail sales (some outlets not included, some online sales etc...) but generally, this is as close as you are ever going to get to an accurate number (for USA sales ONLY):

Steve Perry - For The Love Of Strange Medicine - 431,563
Steve Perry - Greatest Hits + Five - 93,535

Journey - Arrival - 187,411
Journey - Greatest Hits Live - 694,039
Journey - Trial By Fire - 1,202,323

Tall Stories - S/T - 25,793

Just think, Arrival has sold 200k...with ANY, push at all, it could have doubled. perry's releases had tons of push..and still lost out..

Now, how do we figure Generations? I had it down to between 390K and 415K.

I find it a bit strange that FTLOSM is certified gold, but it didn't SoundScan enough to be gold...It must just barely have made it...

Or, they shipped 500,000 units and just claimed it as gold.

That is indeed the way these things go. One industry joke is Shipped (to stores) Platinum, returned (from stores) Gold.

When stores return product, the sales #s do not come off the sales award accreditations.

I assume that is because once printed, and shipped, unsold units returned to warehouses may still be sold without having a "new run" made; with the assumption they will eventually be sold. Makes sense actually..Until 400,000 units are sitting in an warehouse somewhere for 5 years..amd have NOT been sold.

I'm guessing the story with Greatest Hits +5 is that a lot of people are like me, I keep thinking I ought to pick that up some day then something always comes along which I get more enthused about. I guess I was never over the moon about either of Perry's albums as a whole, so I'm not in any hurry to hear what was left off those albums.

Dream, I got that cd...

It has a lot of Sam Cooke style music on there, and I like a lot of it actually.

It's not bad...not great either.

This is soundscan at retail stores only, correct? this would not count any other sales, for example, music clubs.

The Kiss solo albums in 1978 all shipped Platinum. They were certified as such if I'm not mistaken. However, actual sales were disappointing and they ended up in the cut out bin. Sounds like a similar kind of thing.

I'm very impressed that Arrival is at around 200,000 units. Had it received any radio play at all it could have been a really big seller IMO.

:? Why can we never get 'WORLDWIDE' figures? For instance, aren't there sales charts for Australia, UK, Germany, Japan, Brazil...etc?? Isn't there a place to get combined figures? Is an artist's success based soley on USA sales figures? Of course not.

Good question.

I always here how Journey has sold 75 million albums.

I really question that. According to RIAA, 41 million have been sold in the US. Are you telling me 34 million other units were moved worldwide? Hmm, I don't know on that one.

Where did you see that!?
Or is this your way of professing your love of ROR?

Nice try there Einstien.

I just looked.

ROR came out APR of 1986.

Went Platinum in June of 86, and double platinum in 1989.

Hardly 10 million units...
