Anybody is going to sound like Neal???

I don't know that this subject requires a thread of its own but wanted to address a portion of Fernando's comments from the Perry board topic about what Perry should do. As my remarks are not about Perry, I thought I'd post them here.

Fernando wrote:
I think it would be important to move away from Journey sounding music. It would invite the JOURNEY comparisons, and let's face it.. anybody playing guitar with him on rock songs is going to sound like Neal.

The fact is, no one is going to sound like Neal. Fernando's statement and the replies in agreement is another example of how Perryheads have missed out on the Journey experience imo. Neal is every bit as talented and unique on his instrument as Perry was on his.

Except Perry would probably pick someone with a similar sound. Lincoln played similarly. And look at The Storm and Hardline finding Josh. He plays very much like Neal. He even listed Neal as an influence!

But I would like Perry to find a real bluesy guitarist!

I too thought about Lincoln and and Josh. I felt that Lincoln was good but a shallow imitation, sort of like I felt about Hugo's imitation of Perry. I hear Neal's influence in Josh but he can't touch Neal. I think Neal actually employed Josh to do demonstrations of the Schon guitars when they came out.

I know Josh's "relationship" with Neal and the Journey clan goes WAY back. He was on The Vu Cd with Ross.

I think, IMO, what Fernando was saying was, he wasn't putting Schon down, but it's easier to sound like Neal than Perry. I can play Light so close to Neal's I don't think any of you here could tell the difference. Granted, that's only one song, and as soon as Nal went on an impromptu tangent, I would be toast.

Yeah that one as well..I can play that one better than Neal himself. However, there is no emotional playing, no place to bend em...like Lights..

I am secure enough to not worry about it, NIGGY. You need to discuss anything?

I don't think Fernando was trying to put Neal down either, just saying I feel that Perryheads (not to include Fernando, I'm not that familliar with his posts) think Perry was the only truly exceptional talent in the band.

NMT, I agree that Perry was NOT the only exceptional talent. Cubby recently gave me copies of the first three JOURNEY albums, and this has proven to me that JOURNEY was a clearly established band before SP joined. I mean, it had a stylistic direction (even if it was not as profitable as it was later), and was moving ahead with some really choice/classy prog influenced (and even some pop influenced) music.

When I wrote what I did, I was saying that Neal's guitar artistry on his SP collaborations is SO DEFINITIVE, and so GENRE DEFINING in the melodic rock arena, that when you hear anybody else playing Journey-esque rock with SP, you will hear the ghost of Neal's powerful playing even if it's not him playing. When I hear SP's solo work, the solos are always reminiscent of Neal's guitar work.

Another example is Freddie Mercury, and his solo work. Why is it that the guitarists that worked with him always somehow ended up sounding like Brian May? Listen to LOVE KILLS from the Metropolis soundtrack. It's Rick Vito playing like Brian May. Maybe Steve should get Brian to do some solos on his new work, 'cause Brian definitely wouldn't sound like Neal.

That's why I said that Steve Perry should do music OTHER than Journey-esque music. Like dance rock, pop rock (think Michael Bolton's music, and not like FOOLS GAME, which is more Journey type rock).

Fernando, I want to appologize for coming across like I included you among those that think Perry was Journey. I know that is not the case. Your statement just seemed like something I think so many of them seem to feel as they have not seen any value to Journey other than that of being Perry's back up band. I took your statement about anyone sounding like Neal literally, which is not how it was meant.
I agree that I hear an attempt at bringing Neal's thing to FTLOSM and a couple of feeble attempts on ST. I also agree that Perry should do something very different from Journey on his rhetorical (as it will never happen) album, old standards and r&b classics.

Hey, NMT, no apology necessary... I was really happy to see someone reference one of my posts... that means somebody actually is reading my stuff!!

But you mentioned something interesting.... an r&b classics/album. Is he actually thinking about doing something like that? Not a very original idea to do another classics album on the heels of Michael McDonald and Rod Stewart's albums.

Now, if he decided to do an album of material from that r&b artist that he really likes (I forgot the guy's name, but he died young), then I could see that happening because he influenced Steve a lot.. he has said as much in a few interviews. That would make more sense!

Cool, thanks.
Yes, Sam Cooke, it would be interesting the hear Perry perform some of those songs. Perry sounds very much like what I've heard of Sam both in terms of style and voice. I think Perry tailored his voice to actually sound like Cooke, though not to the extent that Hugo for instance copied Perry.
For sure he is much much more of a Cooke clone than Augeri is (accused of being) a Perry clone.
I don't think Perry has any plans whatsoever to do anything again, he just likes to throw out some crumbs to his pigeons, hope of something new to keep them interested and talking about him in my opinion.
