The movie was Heavy Metal, he's probably stretching the truth here as Jonathan had written most of Open Arms was before that. Sony probably pushed to get the song in the movie rather than the producers asking Journey to write one for it.

Trust me, Augeri has messed up before...A bunch of times, but the Heads would never know that, because they wouldn't be caught dead at a Journey concert..it's like kryptonite to them....

I have seen complaints about and witnessed some forgotten lyrics, particularly the first couple tours. But I'm talking specifically about Perry's intentionl ad-libbed jibberish and double time singing. It would be blasphemy if Augeri had done this. Admittedly, I don't know which was the case with what Perry was doing in this instance on the Houston DVD.

Two things..

1) I have seen Perry mess up words on more than one occasion...no biggie. he once messes up Ask the Lonely, by singing the second verse first, and I caught it, but he was good at pretending it never happened.

2) You know Espee...He didn't like performing in front of the cameras....He must have gotten nervous.

I listened to the song today, due to this question. I think I know what Nora is saying.


In the middle of the song, Perry IMO, improvises the words..

He does sing, "He drove a Mazarati, lived up in the hills-ay..on and on.

I must say I dig the shit out of it.. I absolutely love the Perry goes rapid fire and ends up with 38,38,38,38...


Just awesome.


This is one of the those times, where Perry sounded so goddamned good, he could just hum his own words to the usic pitch and it would sound good.

This is a perfect example of why StevePerry, at the time was untouchable. This is exactly why the Dennis DeYoungs and Kevin Cronins, the Bono's, and the David Lee Roths were not half as good as Espee in the 80's....

Hell, those guys areall good, but they weren't in the same league as Perry....Not even close. DeYoung couldn't on his best day, sing the Journey catalogue, like this live CD....

I'm sorry, but I cannot imagine playing/singing the same songs night after night after night after night and doing them the same way each night, with the same level of intensity and interest. I've done community theater and even when a show runs three to five weeks, you do something different in your performance from one night to the next. It helps to keep it alive and sparked for you, as opposed to simply "going through the motions."

Well, I didn't enjoy it either when "Queen + Paul Rogers" did Hammer To Fall mostly in acoustic aswell, I thought it was a complete waiste of a great song performed LIVE.

Personally I don't mind alittle change in the lyrics, but sometimes its just too much. When your waiting for Brian May or Neal Schon's famous solo, then they just completely change it up. Changing the famous Guitar solo's during a song, is a let down for me.

Then you know EXACTLY what goes on with going out on stage and performing something to the equivalent of the movie, "Groundhog Day" night...after night...after night....



I admit I wasn't so brave....did the same perfomance every time...hit the same "marks"; same inflection of dialogue....same solo songs....

...which is why I ABSOLUTELY LOVE being lead vocalist in a band!!
Change things up; make it interesting....nothing beats it....

The Houston '81 he's singing approx 10 X (Exaggeration) faster and ad libbing even more "ay-ies." Not bad, pretty cool actually. Sort of a Perryism as Cain would say.

Hey, I don't mind at all the way Perry changed things up, I love the way he "spiced up" that song!!! All I can say is.....OH MY, MY, HE WAS ON FIRE with EVERY song he sang!!!!

Like someone else said here, "This is his song, so he can sing it anyway he wants too".
