Journey DVD Review

Postby TageRyche » Tue Jan 03, 2006 2:30 am

I realize that I'm taking my life in my hands by posting this in one of the more combative forums here on Melodicrock, but here goes anyway.

Here's my review of Journey's Live In Houston 1981: Escape Tour (DVD/CD)

I don't think you have anything to worry about. It is a solid review.

Having not watched the DVD yet, it was helpful that you pointed out the track listing issue. And we all know that Neal and Ross didn't move much. Hell, Ross still doesn't. As for the solos, you may be right, but I still dig them. Of course Neal gets more than his share nowadays, but hearing Smitty's solo is magical to me. Jon's? Eh....

Thanks for promoting the DVD.
Did you post it in the Perry Forum? (Yes, I will see for myself. But a kindly suggestion if you did not.)

I could have done without his "The Bad" comment, since he obviously did not follow the reasoning behind the idea. But other than that, I thought it was an ok review.

Hi there and welcome

I don't know how much you've "lurked" here, but I am a "newbie" to the Journey-After-Steve-Perry sound.

Dave, my "take" on your response takes me back to what started it all:

The Journey BTM.

Jim Forbes, the narrarator said something to the effect of: "If Journey was to continue, it would have to take on a dramatic new sound" (or was it "look"? :? I can't remember and don't want to go digging around for the tape )

Wouldn't you say that that's what's going on here w/ "Generations"?

No Dave. His grade doesn't bother me as much as the fact his "reason" for a 3...was too many singers.

He can screw off. What the hell? Generations had 5 lead singers and it is Heads and shoulders above and better than TBF and ROR, both of which had 1 lead singer.

And this is why people should completely read the entire review before commenting.

If you'd take the time to read who wrote the two reviews you'll notice it's two different people.

I wrote the DVD review, the site owner did the Generations album (which by the way, I haven't even listened to at all yet.)

Thanks for illustrating my point about this being the most combative forum.

Uh, classicassholefan, the review was BULLSHIT. if you read it, it wasn't based on OPINION< it was based on the fact he didn't like everyone singing.

Hey Deano,

To me, that sounds like legitimate criticism. God knows, I could do without hearing J. Cain vocalize  ....Ross's tune was great musically, but vocally was so so. Neal's was good although he is no Steve Lukather when it comes to singing. Dean's vocal's were stellar

So, why does that bother you so much that someone would say that?

Jim

Wait, let's visit part 2 of this sentance again......

"it was based on the fact HE DIDN'T LIKE everyone singing"

"He didn't like"....that's not opinion ??? :?

Disagree with the writers opinion all you want, but how about using some of what you learned to get that college degree in your rebuttal ??? Do words like "Fuck" and "Bullshit" earn good grades in papers written at Washington State ? Cus maybe I'll go there to get my Masters if thats the case.

And Jim, if a reviewer says something like "All 5 sing, and that's not good," that's a Perry fan's favourite line.

Deano, I'll give you this much....at least you can spell Fuck You on your own, unlike Dog Si Lean who has to use pictures to make his point.

I'm glad all that Poly Sci training is being put to good use on your train....I bet thats one reason mommy and you dont get along, she's probably STILL paying off your student loans, isn't she ?

Good thing for you the required classes for english and writing were so minimal.....assuming you really did graduate that is. ( excerpt from Deano's note to english professor before the final ......PASS ME YOU FUCKER !!!!)

WSU must be so proud to count you amongst their alumni !!!! I bet you were featured in the alumni newsletter in the "Where are they now" section !!!!!

Of course, I get a reply from you, and of course you can't say where you went to school.

And by the way, what's wrong with working for the RR? I guarantee you I make more money than you do, gurantee it.

Go back and butter up your Twig pals. Go write me some more PM's that I never read.

Nora, the narrator only says that line on the rarely seen Directors cut of "Behind the Music" (it was aired on VH1 maybe once). In the usually aired Journey episode, that particular line is omitted (with good reason). It simply doesn't make any sense. The narrator hints at how Journey had to become radically different to survive, and then the episode goes on to say how completely undifferent the band has remained ("It's Steve Perry with a perm!").
I just don't understand the line nor what the narrator was getting at.
Does anyone?

Deano, I never said there is anything wrong with working for the Railroad...just glad all that money you spent on a poly sci degree is being put to good use ! Cause I'm sure someone paid tens of thousands of dollars so you could achieve it ( and that doesnt even count bribes paid for passing grades )

Speaking of Omissions, I saw no denial about mommy paying off your student loans.......hmmmm. Maybe you just arent good at repayment of debts ?

And by the way, I have a Marketing Degree from a local Technical College, earned while working 40 hours per week....no apologies for that here, some of us have always had to work for what we have.

Now type out your rebuttal, but see if you can do it with out all those great words that are the cornerstone of your vocabulary....you know, Fucker, Asshole, Bullshit, Shithead, Fucktard etc.......

I geuss working at the White House was a big waste of a Polt Sci degree. If it hadn't had been for my wife passing away at 24 years old, and two kids, I would have had a career in politics. You feel good now, classicaholefan? You call me a liar for having cancer, and I must admit, that takes balls, or just a lack of a human heart, and now you know my wife died of it too. I hope you are smiling buddy.

Yep. The Federal Government did. I borrowed 35,000 dollars and the loans are paid off. You need to see payment proof?

Speaking of Omissions, I saw no denial about mommy paying off your student loans.......hmmmm. Maybe you just arent good at repayment of debts ?

Mommy didn't do jack shit for me since I was 10..

I would generally aplaud that, but since you claim you did it, I have to laugh. What, U of Illinois wouldn't take you? Hahaha.
By the way, before you diss my degree, remember the Pac 10 is the best conference of acadamia outside the Ivy league. You did know WSU is in the Pac 10, right?

Now type out your rebuttal, but see if you can do it with out all those great words that are the cornerstone of your vocabulary....you know, Fucker, Asshole, Bullshit, Shithead, Fucktard etc.......

IIIIIIII ben' working on the raaaaaaailroad, allll the livelong daaaaaaaaay.

I'm truly sorry about your wife, that is sad, truly. It does help explain your bitter sour attitude about life. It is too bad you didnt have the fortitude to pick up the pieces and continue on to use your talents. Probably a good decision though, not many get elected to anything with a mouth/vocabulay like yours.

Help me uderstand the timeline of your life though. Your wife died at 24 AND you were Drew Bledsoes roomate in College ? that apartment or dorm room must have been rather crowded with the 3 of you living there.
or 4 or 5 depending on how many of the kids were born at the time. Oh and I saw your pictures on-line after the Chicago trip, you look much older then Drew....did he mind the age difference ? He must really like kids to agree to that arrangement !

Just wondering.

Yep. I am much older than Drew. Drew live in student housing with me and two others. Wife and kids spent 1 semester at her mom's house.

I really don't need to explain anything to you. I didn't go to school until I was 24. Unlike you, I went to Community college for a year, then I went to a REAL school. Not some Tech school where they sell diploma's. I guarantee you if we BOTH apply for the same job, a WSU diploma is a lot heavier than a Tech College cert.

Pick uu the pieces? Are you kidding me? Dude I raised 2 kids by myself. What the fuck do you want me to do? Hire a nanny, and remain at the WH?

Go to Hell you sick fuck.

Now that I have cancer, I hope you get it too. I hope you die.

Deano Said:

"Now that I have cancer, I hope you get it too. I hope you die."

There's one big difference between you and me Deano, I truly hope you don't die.....in fact , I hope you recover fully...really I do. If you had read my recent PM to you, you would have seen that I wished you good health in the coming year.

By the way, you could get your wish someday, I have already survived cancer once, which makes me more likely to get it again someday. In my opinion, life is too short to let it be filled with ill feelings and hatred.

And I never said you dont have cancer, I simply questioned why someone who had it would behave in some of the self-destructive ways you have....No one else I have ever know who had cancer has dealt with it quite like you have ( at least on-line )I expressed doubt, but how would I really know one way or the other what your medical condition is ???

But we really have digressed here havent we ? You were able to do a whole post without typing an obscenity..way to go, consider the challenge a permanent one ! If you are as smart as you say you are, it should be easy, shouldnt it ?

Dude, I am not going to last the year. What don't you get? Of course I am humbled. I am just defending the Band against all the Goddamned Heads...

What don't you understand? I have not gone public with this because it's not all about me. I am going to die this year, and no, I don't want you to die. I just think life is very unfair. I have 2 kids to tell this to. Wanna trade places? I thought not.

Now after writing this, I am more depressed than ever, and I didn't think that was possible.

OK, for the record, I never said a word about your cancer publicly until you brought it up.

That this sucks for your kids is an understatement...a huge one at that.

You sound as if your fate is 100 percent sealed.....While I know none of the particulars of your situation, I don't believe that.....you obviously have a lot to live for.....so I am going to to be hypocritical for a minute and say FIGHT IT YOU DUMB FUCKER ! fight it with everything you've got......self pity wont help you.....drinking wont help you....every ounce of energy you have left needs to be channeled positively. Youve got a support group right here on this board if you want it. Hell, I rail on you hard, but even I would offer you support......If you have already given up, well, that is truly a pity. Don't "strike out looking.....swing the bat as hard as you can, theres a chance you'll knock it over the fence.

So again, I wish you good health in the comng year........

Yep, I typo'd Deen name after typing Deano.... and while Luke is no Schon, he has done more session work than Neal, so he is far from a hack with a guitar as a prop. I know you weren't saying that but......and also Luke has done back ground vocals on Van Halen albums....very talented, diverse guy who is also a great interview.

As far as Perry fans saying that about too many singers.........well, it's possible that they are right, even if their motives are wrong......I'd be curious to see if anyone can name a great CD/Album with 5 lead vocalists........

Firstly, and I know you said this, I wasn't at all ripping Luke..He is great. But I have to say, whether Journey be my favourite band or not, Neal Schon is far and away better than anyone out there, anyone. Joe Perry? T Shaw? Edge? lol, those guys blow. I would put Luke in my top 5, but honestly Neal is number one for me, far ahead of the next guitarist, Kenny Wayne Shepard, IMO is the heir to the throne to Schon.

His solo CD's, all what, 6 or so, are all different. His live Hendrix continues to blow me away...Hell, he did "My Heart Will Go on" and it was awesome.

By the way, about the 5 vocalist. Hey let's face it, Ross Valory is amazing..on Backup vocals. IMO, he shouldn't go near a lead vox mic...same with Neal, although he sings Jimmy great. Cain is tolerable, not great.

Besides, no one was advocating a CD of GH with 5 vocalists. However, I bet you can't name me another singer in the industry better than Castronovo? No one, IMO. Not even Augeri. Sorry L....

It might be a little early, but NIGGY, ND is taking another ASSKICKING. What, 8 bowl losses in a row? If we weren't friends, I wouldn't run smack...

I dunno. I like Ross's vox on 'Gone Crazy'.
However, hearing the song live is another matter.
Nearly cleared out the whole damned place.

For the record, Neal doesn't sing anything great. No, not even Hendrix.

Huh?
Just the other day in the "live boots" thread you wrote that "I am not as big a fan of deens voice as I once was...He has a good voice, but he really can't sing as good as Augeri."
So which is it, Dean? :?

Maybe Deen on 1 vocal chord is better than most singers. The Toronto Gens. show he covered Patiently and I'm still picking up my jaw off the floor. And this was with his damaged voice. On the CD, I thoughtm "eh. nothing Augeri can't already do." Then I heard the '05 Patiently. I can only imagine how good it was before the chord damage.
Ross should drop WLAL and ONLY sing GC. I liked hearing him do it on the Toronto boot, but with one of his own vocal songs now, what's the point? You have a 1st class vocalist who does smooth blues.
