Which drummer do you like better, Smith or Castronovo?

I think Steve Smith is an incredible player, but I've always been blown away by Deen's drumming, particularly his work on guitar albums, moreso than Journey stuff.

What do you guys think?

Steve Smith is a one in a million drummer, just technically amazing and a legend in his own right. Deen is amazing, there's only a handful of people that can do what he does - But even he admits that Smith is the master.

As much as I like Deen...I really miss Smitty! He is an amazing drummer. He got me to actually listen to the drums as an instrument, not just a timekeeper!

But Deen can sing, too...

Better? Alex VH by far blows them BOTH away.

My ultimate wish, especially this year, is for them to BOTH be in the band, at the same time. Think about it.

Castronovo. Goes in line with my favoring the real life lineup now in general as my favorite.

For me, it is Steve Smith.

He is an AMAZINGLY talented drummer!!! I love his style! I especially loved his solo on the Houston DVD/CD, it is fantastic!!! :D

Check out this site - for some comparisons - Deen's samples on here are great BTW - but overall style comparisons, and where they came from, I think it's Metal Rock (Deen) vs. Jazz Rock (Smith)

Go listen to Deens' first sample, "X Ray Eyes." I think Neal may have ripped that guitar for World Gone Wild. Whataya think?

Smith and his jazz rock. I love his bald head. He's so inonvative and cool.
I like that. I like his style.

That's a stretch....I do here something slightly similar on the beginning of World Gone Wild, but I don't think it was lifted from that...

Oh I know. I would never accuse Neal of ripping anything. Just sounds identical to me, that's all. And the guitar I hear is the ending of WGW.

Smitty is incredible, but I vote for Deen, for what he brings to the Journey of today, and because his drumming is amazing, and because he can sing ("Jesse Rides") like Perrry never could!

I agree Deen brings more to the Current lineup, BUT, come on Yakster, Perry was a lot better than Deen or anyone for that matter.

I bash the guy for his personal behaviour and character, but I also think without a doubt, he is the greatest frontman of all time. I have seen Perry 6 times, and every time he left me awestruck.

Ok - I hear that now - still a stretch....lol...

Also, I don't think it 's impossible for Neal to lift something, either consciously or unconsciously. He's used some classic Journey parts, and some solo stuff, in a few places on newer material. It just makes one wonder if Neal was checking out the stuff Deen happened to have been playin' on. Not a stretch...

For me i think it has to be Deeno! Not only is he stylish, but he's so powerful too...just check out the live 2001 DVD, the kit literally shakes when he pounds them - awesome stuff!

If i had to pick my fave drumer tho, it would have to be out of Toto stickmen, Jeff Porcaro and Simon Phillips...i've never seen such awesome players. After seeing these guys live there are no other drummers that come close...in my own opinion of course!

I like Steve Smith the best, but Deen gets much appreciation from me for being both a great drummer and singer!

To each his own, Rock. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Taste is in your mouth, etc.

Key word here is "was." That would be past tense. You can't sit on your past laurels forever. Dude has proven he can't cut the mustard anymore.

Lest we forget...with Perry, there was no Journey unless he felt the need. My vote stays with Deen. ...And Steve Augeri. .....And Journey being a Rock band.
