VH1 Classic Journey Video

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Wed Jan 18, 2006 7:50 am

I found this on BackTalk (kudos to the fan who had the smart idea of saving it to a website). The band performs the Time3 obscurity, "Liberty". Neal has done this before and has done it better. I have an Under the Radar bootleg (thank you Father Eric) where his accoustic strumming is bar-none, jaw-droppingly phenomenal. Here it's kind of messy.
Augeri sounds strong, but (as he's prone to do) fequently ducks challenging parts by pulling the microphone away from his face.
Still, all in all, a decent performace from the band we know as Journey.

This and The Time are my highlights of that tour. He did struggle slightly with the high notes.
Hell the studio version has some Perry's highest-ever peaks so this is not an easy cover and I think Augeri pulls it off convincingly (Deano). :x

You don't?!?!?!
Dude, that Biloxi one, if that's what TNC's talking about, he comes tantalizing close to nailing it.

Yeah, the Biloxi one is fantastic stuff. My guitarist friend bitches to me about how Neal breaks into playing middle eastern sounding chords, considering the song is all about America and it's virtues of freedom and liberty. Maybe he has a point. Oh well. Fuck 'em.

Wisely thought out, Eric. Because with Perry (who can't much carry a tune anymore, ergo he is now the "former Voice of Rock") there would be no Journey. How many times do we have to recycle this one?

That WAS a strange interlude. I did not find it to be al quaida-sounding but just a little thing to extend the song a little give Neal a little room to flex. Given the song subject matter though, why would he play something that people could remotely construe as being mid eastern? Odd.
Me and Dean were sractching our heads about why he was playing SSB in the Canada boots when he knows O Canada, too.

I thought it sounded a little more bluegrassy than Middle Eastern, but what do I know.

Or Amazing Grace, his version is even better than his SSB.

Speaking of odd Neal interludes....anybody pick up on the little like Irish jiggy thing he did as part of a very cool intro to WITS back on the '98 Vacation's Over tour japan leg?
Abita, Niggster and Deano are the other three that I am certain have this boot from Tokyo '98. It's neal playing that piece (again it struck me right off the bat as kind of Gaelic sounding) and Augeri doing some lyrics about a man, standing waiting with a suitcase....I thought ot was pretty cool and led perfectly into Wheel.

That thing was cool. I think that sketch later turned into Live And Breathe on Arrival.

The Live and Breath intro to Wheel was one of the best things Journey has done, should put it back into to the show.
As for intros, SSB would be a great lead in to OOHW, if they play it live anymore.

I've heard the "Live and Breathe" WITS intro several times (very moody, has a dark-Western vibe), but I don't hear anything Gaelic about it, nor do I hear anything about a suitcase.
