Musicians: Is your gear "Journey-inspired"?

Postby TRAGChick » Sat Feb 04, 2006 9:31 am

Hey all....

Paging all MelRock Journey-Forum Musicians....8)

My question is this:

During a Journey concert, did you see any of the guys use/play a particular piece of gear (be it amp, mic, guitar, keyboard, drums, etc) and it inspired you to go out and get one of your own?

Here's my story:

Right after college, at 22, I knew that if I was going to be in any kind of band, I would have to purchase my own equipment....so, one day, I went out to a Music Store, looking for a singer's mic....I'm looking around, and I see this mic....thinking, Hey that thing looks really familiar...and then it dawned on me:

It was the mic that Steve used during the "Frontiers" tour....specifically, in the "Send Her My Love" video.

I figured, Hey - if it's good enough for Steve Perry, then it's good enough for me! LOL

Seriously...that was my rationale...bought it sight-unseen...use it to this day....MAN it is powerful!!

I look at it as my own little "tribute / thank you" to the guy that started it all for me.

PS ~ For the record, it's a "TOA J1 Dynamic Cardioid"

Your turn.

Didn't Perry recently talk about his Mic and how he "customized" it?

My husband is a guitar player, but can't find anyone to jam with.

He had read that Steve Augeri had used Garageband to write songs.
So I bought him an ibook with Garageband to make background tracks to jam to.

I thought it would be perfect for a beginner; he's never owned a computer before.
We plugged in his guitar and after about an hour, he mastered Garageband and was already complaining about the limitations.

I ended up giving him some of my pro audio programs and now he's happy as a clam.

It makes me wonder if the limitations in Garageband might have had some effect on the songwriting on Generations.

Yeah that's right - he did.

Was it the "Frontiers" mic he was referring to? Because they use different mics on each tour.

Just watched a few seconds of DSB - he's using a different one.

I think he was talking about his Escape mic.

Just what would that program have to do with the songwriting? It is perfect for "ideas", but those ideas get fleshed out with everyone else in the room. If anything, I would imagine the fact that very little was done together would cause your supposed songwriting problems.

Steve also used ElectroVoice mics at one point. In fact, there is a credit given to them on a live album, along with Peavey Electronics for monitors.

In the studio, Steve Perry used his refurbished and modified Neumann M49. It was serviced by Klaus Heine of German Mic Works.

Peace,
Brent

Hey Brent and Welcome!

On the "Street Talk" CD cover, isn't it interesting how "Perry" looks an AWFUL LOT like the "Peavey" logo??

Things that make you go, "hmmmm....."

I've always wondered how clams would be happy, being dried out, and then dropped into boiling water..

I think you just answered your own question. This only applies to a few songs. It has been discussed that a few of the tracks on Generations are a bit repetitive.

Garageband is a repeating loop-based program that permits no key changes or tempo changes.

Maybe some tracks didn't get fleshed out. Maybe there wasn't time.

How do you mean?

Are you talking about his bent leg...how it looks like a "backwards "P" "?
