I haven't played "Voice" in a good long time. Neal guitar work has the ability to move people, but the compositions on "Voice" are all covers.
Any emotional effect contained within the song was there to begin with in the original version and is now just being emulated by Neal's guitar.
I prefer original material.
Hopefully his blues material will really fit the bill for what I'm looking for.
But doubtful, cuz its all blues covers.

I thought Neal brought more emotion to most than the originals had.

Yeah, if I had to pick between Neal's work with Journey and all of his solo/outside projects, I'd likely take the later.

Back to the topic, I probably listen to Beyond the Thunder the least of his solo stuff, thought I think its very good, just more mellow, more than Voice even, imo.

Maybe Neal has to get something out of his system with his solo work. I find it boreing. His work with Classic Journey is Neal at his very best. It's chilling at times and is a big part of what makes the songs hits. JMHO

Refresh my memory, do you have Arrival, Red13 and Gens? I am interested to know which songs you are referring to when you say he forgot how to play to a singer.

HOTS, Neal's guitar is a little more out-front these days then it was in the past.
You're right, but there are still more subtle intimate moments to be found.
Listen to the inter-play between Augeri and Neal on the conclusion of "Beyond the Clouds".
Neal isn't overriding the singer here, he's complimenting him.
Collectively, like they are doing a dance.

I think an example of what HOTS is talking about would be "Better Together". The guitar never lets up. Augeri is practically trying to shout over Neal in some parts.
