Just got done listening to some of Survivor's new samples. One thing that struck me was how similar Jimi Jamison's voice compares to his voice from 20 years ago.

It's obvious that voice changes with age. But why does Jamison's voice seem like a carbon copy of his voice from 20 years ago, while Perry's does not at all?

Just curious. Don't mean this post to be a hostile one.

I've always wondered that myself.

Did Jamie toured for 6 years in a row,7 months per year,6 nights a week,2 hour live shows per night,in full voice delivery?Plus rehearsals and a record every year?I doubt it.
Steve did that between 1978 and 1983.
It`s all about how much and how long.

Then almost nothing for 20 years. I'd say overuse followed by no use compounded the natural affect aging would have.

On a different approach...I would make a comparison. They say that usually geniuses don`t live long because they "burn" too fast, miracles don`t last more than 3 days, etc. I would say that Steve`s voice was a phenomenon, one that comes around once in a hundred years.Like a comet,if you will.
The Voice had its glory and then its decline.

Oh stop laughing,will ya? lol

Apparently you never watched hockey in Lake Placid, NY, in 1980.

Perry's voice came along once in a generation...Not in a comet's age or anything.

More than a generation for me. I was never as moved by any vocalist before and have yet to find anyone to compare since.

I truly believe that his voice would be more wonderful than ever if he wanted to perform again.

I think Jamo's voice has actually changed a bit...a couple of the other album tracks suggest that.

That would take a LOT of work. An amount of work he hasn't shown he wants to put in in the last decade.

It'd probably take surgery too.

I like Perry as much as the next person, but honestly, I don't see a way. I don't see him wanting to, and I don't see him taking the necessary steps. I believe he'll tour again and I believe he'll record again.

I just think he'll sound more like Barry White than Steve Perry when he does it.

Perry's voice didn't fall apart until the ROR tour....after a couple year rest from touring. It has steadily gotten worse SINCE then - with hardly any touring or recording at all.

The truth is probably something like drinking or other drug abuse. But, that isn't something I think he would admit, and I doubt Perry fans will ever want to accept.

I'd accept it Monker, but I'd have to have incontrovertible proof. I know he's abused substances, that's a nobrainer, but I don't think that's what changed his voice.

A certain poster (whose domain is primarily the STYX forum) has maintained for years on newsgroups that Perry did cocaine. He claims that he even got it verified by inside sources. The poster claims it was Perry's raging drug abuse which made him (paraphrasing) "have to get off the merry go round" to save his life.
It also explains the nature of the song "Easy to Fall".

I don't know what Perry did and I don't really care.
His voice still sounds good to me, just not "Journey good".

None of us really knows what Steve's demons may have been TNC. I'm just glad he got past them by whatever means it took.

IMO, there's no voice that will ever be "Journey good" except his.

(I'm not saying Augeri isn't a good singer, only that he could never have taken Journey to the heights that Steve did.)

Yeah. Noticed that as well. I didn't say his voice is the same as 20 years ago. I said it comes close.

It's obvious his voice sounds more like it did 20 years ago compared to Perry's. But I'm sure somebody will say that Perry's voice hasn't changed a bit. GOOD GRIEF.

JJ's voice is deeper and rougher now I can hear it clear as day.
Still sounds amazing, too. He's rolled with and made the best of it. But the resonance of his voice (more musculine than perry's vox) was always what he was about. He didn't rely on high soaring acrobatics like steve.

Good God.

I know what they were. And no, he still hasn't and never will fully leave behind his "demons."

I am renaming Perry, "The Coke Machine."

WGAS!
It's all speculation. I speculate that by the way some of the goons post here, they are high, inebriated or both. You have no proof and I have no proof and "Frankly Scarlett, I don't give a damn." It's all about Classic Journey and the Steve Perry years.
