Songs you like Augeri's rendition of better than Perry's

If there are any.

For me, I think Augeri's voice fits Ask the Lonely and Only the Young better than Perry's did. The songs just took on a new life with Augeri singing them.

None that I've heard. I've heard one bootleg concert and one Free Per View by this band. They sound great on their own music, but Augeri either just doesn't have the voice or doesn't have the pathos in his heart to sing the stuff that Perry sang.

It's not that cut and dry. .
For example, I have yet to hear a single decent live recording of Higher Place and I have over 8 of them.
Augeri does some of the Perry-era numbers proud (Lights, Only the Young, Stone in Love etc) and on some of the others he falters.
I will say this much.
Deen does "Keep on Running" better than Perry ever did.

What? Augeri couldn't sing that song if his life depended on it.

I agree with Ask the Lonely (listen to this ohsherrie). Augeri owns this song for some reason.

I strongly disagree with Only the Young.

I think Stone in Love, Be Good to Yourself are as good.

Escape. I never liked this song until I heard Steve Augeri sing it live.

Maybe on the refined, cleaned-up 2001 "Live" dvd.
Aside from that, he has never sung that song well

I strongly disagree with Only the Young.

What do u base that on?
My vast infinite archive of boots argues to the contrary.

Be Good to Yourself are also good.

Nah. Sorry.
Sounds good on the re-fined cleaned up 2001 dvd, but that's it.
He can never can pull it off live.

Disagree.
SIL is another song that he consistently pulls off decently even on nights when he is running on fumes.

Stone in Love, Seperate Ways, Lights, Escape, When You Love a Woman, Message of Love. Augeri owns these songs, and it ain't on the cleaned up dvd!-ERIC

I would agree with Stone In Love, but Augeri almost always messes up the adlib at the end.

WYLAW, yes, but I've never heard Perry do it live.

TNC, like I said, I've only heard him do the Perry material twice but he just didn't do it for me. He just doesn't put the soul into it that Steve does. That may be because they're not his songs. I tend to think that his voice just doesn't have the soul in it that Steve's does. All of his singing that I've heard so far, including the studio recordings, just lacks that deep reaching, visceral quality that Perry has.

I don't know what you're rambling about.
I never said Augeri was of Perry's caliber.
I took issue with the fact that you said the current band sounds good exclusively playing their own material.
That is false.
Many of them sound terrible.
In particular, "Higher Place".

I have quite a few.
His voice doesn't crack and in fact, I prefer his rendition to Perry's on GHLive.

None! Augeri simply sounds like weak imitation of Perry on Journey's hits. He lacks the range and power that should be expected of a Journey vocalist.

The band isn't much of a help to him tho, as he hasn't a strong enough voice to be heard above the musicians. He was probably a better vocalist with Tall Stories, where he didn't have to compete with musicians who forgot how to play to a singer. A singer shouldn't have to struggle that hard, imo.

I agree with you Deano, that adlib at the end is awful.
Saw them six times last year, and have few boots myself.

No other singer,no matter how good, couldn`t own the songs the way Perry did.Behind SP`s vocal technique was his personality.Who could copy that?

Visceral? Don't see it. He was always more on the effeminate side. According to some he also had a large gay following.

Your loss.
On my boots he delivers the ad lib just fine.
Frankly, I think time has skewed most of your memories.
SIL doesn't even sound that good when sung by Perry live.
Neither do alot of the faster paced rock songs.

That video on VH1C is better than Perry's version.

Did Perry ever sing that song live?
Augeri can and has delivered a mean version of it, but I don't think the VH1 clip captures it.

Augeri always sounds like he has a frog in his throat when he sings.

I was not impressed at all with the 2001 DVD.

Nothing can compare to Perry up to 1983 - even when his voice lowered a bit on Frontiers.

Augeri is an o.k. vocalist, and would probably get more respect with another band. However, being compared to The Voice is a no win situation.

Steve Augeri does an amazing job singing the Journey hits of yester-year. I've enjoyed all the Steve Augeri - Journey era concerts that I have attended over the last few years.

BUT,

In my opinion, he does not sound better than Steve Perry on any of the Steve Perry - Journey era tunes. Especially Escape. That song should be retired from Journey's play list - unless of course, Mr. Perry should decide to sing it with them again (and we all know the chances of that)!

Again, my opinion only.

Journey On!
