More Members?

In my month long hiatus, I have been on a Bruce Springsteen kick. I went out and bought his live dvd's. Obviously, to me, they were just awesome.

I popped in Journey 81 and 2001, and they were both so different to Bruce. Why?

Springsteen has a huge band where Journey has only 5 members. This is not a battle of who is better, but whether if Journey were to add a member or two to get that full sound that Bruce gets.

Bruce: Bruce, Patty Scialfa(vocals and guitar), Gary Tallent(bass), Danny Fefereci(keyboards), Roy Bittan(organ), Suzy Tyrell(fiddle), Nils Lofgren(guitar, slide guitar), Steven Van Zant(guitar), Max Weinburg(drums), and the Big man, Clarence Clemons(sax, percussion), for a total of 10 members.

Journey has the 5 guys.

What if they could add Rolie to play the hammond B3 and sing more?

What if they could add a rythm guitarist to make that fuller sound(no, Augeri doesn't count).

And if they did another record and it included percussion or sax, add a sax player.

I think it would give the band new life, and a lot of exposure.

The difference between the two bands with regard to "full sound" is striking...The biggest drawback would be splitting costs times 6, 7, 8, or whatever it would be. With Bruce it doesn't matter because they play stadiums and entire cities.....

Comments.

No offense, dude, but I really doubt adding more members will in any way gain this band some much-needed exposure.
Rolie's return may make some waves in the melodicrock world, but that's about it.
Unless the new members are already "established names", I honestly can't see any one giving a rat's patoot.
Can you?

I would love Gregg to return but do not see it happening.

And the band tried SAX on ROR.....no way!

I could see Journey hiring some skilled musicians for a tour,no need to be famous ones...A sax player would add a special touch of feeling to some of their ballads,a guitarist could sustain Schons parts, maybe even a string section could work for that "orchestra" sound that would give richness to the songs...A couple of talented girls in a background vocal section that could help Augeri through the show...Many things could be done in order to make a concert look and sound like a big time production. But,yeah, money would be split to more people, although if they would find some good sponsors that wouldn`t be such a problem.
Oh,I don`t see Rolie coming back either, but Journey could use a Hammond B3...now that would be a real plus for the concert sound!

I think they need to take a musical direction....The polished rock sound, albeit their signature sound, has just gotten old. I mean, keep the hits for concert, but add a sax, an organ, something like that.

Didn't they play some dates with the Tower of Power horn section on the ESC4P3 tour? I remember hearing a broadcast on the radio back then. Maybe I was dreaming? :?

There is NO WAY it was 1977! Perry is in the band and he didn't tour with them until 1978...

They played better. There were still some issues. I think it might have been the brand. Those Staples ones were worse. I really didn't want to tell you because you did so much.....

No way to this.
I like that Journey and Van Halen for example, (motley Crue, too) just play with the band and THAT'S IT. Bruce is one thing, because the EStreet band has a huge headcount to begin with.
But you start adding people to augment the sound and pretty soon you got The Rolling Stones revue, which they now have and I despise.
Once you add those no namers to fatten sound you get every song going on WWAAAYYY longer than it should (exhibit Bruce's marathons or Gimme Shelter with the Stones now). Also, Cain can handle the Hammond fine as well as the standard issue Cain style keys. There's only room in my Journey for 1 keyboardist/organist.
Regarding the Tower Of Power: To my knowledge, one of the members of that section, who played with journey on Good Times available on the Time Boxset, was none other than Victor Conte, AKA the founder CEO of BALCO the muscle behind the Bond's/Sosas/McGwires of the baseball world. you could look it up (I think).
