Best Journey Song that Journey Never Actually Did?

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Tue Apr 11, 2006 11:22 pm

In other words, what song to you typifies that Journey sound?
It sounds like Journey, it moves you like Journey, it feels like Journey, yet lo and behold, it was sung and written by somebody else entiriely!

For me, I am gonna have to say "River of Destiny" by Two Fires.
What a melodic magnum opus.
This is every Journey fan's wet dream and then some.

Jon and Neal are probably kicking themselves for not concieving of that one.

Your Turn.

Good thread, TNC.

As I have said countless times before, the Shy CD, Sunset & Vine, is very reminiscent of ESC4P3 era Journey. There are many songs on there that I think sound like Journey tunes, but if I have to pick one, it would be "First Love", or maybe "Don't Jump the Gun". Listen to samples here:

This is one of my all-time favorite CDs. I'd put it up there with any Journey disc.

Yes, I've noticed you hawking it on this forum previously.
You seem to be a man of largely impeccable tastes (well, with the exception of "Believe") I will def. make a point of checking them out.

It doesn't 'move' me like Journey but it has a Journey-like feel to it.

"Callin' To Your Heart" by Giuffria.

Ripped a few pages out of the "Journey-Playbook", if you know what I mean... 8)

Yeah, I love "Stranger", too. I think it's on the same album.

When Thomas joined the band is when they got good. Not a huge fan of the incarnations that were anything but Starship. And they are pretty Journeyesque.... Wish that new live record would come out stateside, i knew 'Drew plunked down for the Jap import.

I've heard that song. High on You. And, it most definitely sounds like a Journey song. I didn't like it though cause it has too much fluff and tries too hard to be the "middle of the road" crowd pleaser song.

Well, I would say that when he first joined was when they were good. I would actually say that Jefferson Starship was the best. Once they became just Starship, while still enjoyable, they seemed to get too "pop" and fluffy.

I am gonna cheat and say the first Storm CD! With 3/5 of Journey playing, a simmilar sounding vocalist and guitarist, duets with Gregg, how could it NOT!?

Yeah, I know! I am trying to think of something a little out of the mainstream. Jim Jidhed (Alien) certainly has a similar vocal style but I am not really familiar with his CD. A lot of people mention Giuffira but it never worked for me. A lot of people mention Benny Mardones' "Into The Night" but again....doesn't do it for me. In a way I think Two Fires is almost as big a 'cop out' because of their relationship to Journey. So I am still thinking...... :D

Ow, I think I hurt myself!

Couldn't remember this guy's name to save my life...and just now, BAM! 8)

Grayson Hugh: "Bring It All Back"

Came out in '90 or '91....very bluesy, with "Escape-era" vocals.

Yeah, I thought about Search is Over...that's my answer for now. It's way light and fluffy pancakes though even for Journey. But think how much better the song would be with Perry singing it.

See, this is weird. A lot of people accuse Jimi Jamison of sounding like Perry, and I don't hear it in the least. I think Bickler in those days was very Perryesque however.

Music wise I always thought that the Santana song "All I Ever Wanted" was their attempt to sound at least musically like Journey's late 70's era rock sound.

Another one that is to easy is "It's Only Make Believe" off of Gregg Rolie's first solo album. Again not so much vocally, but definately musically featuring Neal on guitar. Always thought that would have been a great Journey song.

The one that stands out the most in my opinion as a straigt Journey sound rip off is, as mentioned before, Giuffria's "Callin' to you heart"

It's a corny love song, but i like it...Count on Me by Jefferson Airplane has some parts where the singer reminds me of Steve Perry and the sound is laid back like some of their music.

Giuffria morphed into House Of Lords. New singer James Christian, but really it sounds very much the same. Greg Giuffria and James reunited for a new House Of Lords CD to be released soon. But it is unclear whether Greg will tour with the band. House Of Lords has many CDs to check out.

Greg Giuffria has had some bad luck in the past two years. His home studio was destroyed by fire just as he was to finish up a solo record. And then the Hard Rock Cafe in New Orleans was destroyed by Katrina. Apparantly he was a big investor in that.

I can't believe no one said, "Workin' Class Man" by Australian, Jimmy Barnes. Yes, Frigga wrote it, but it has Journey all over it.

That would have been a sure fire Journey top ten hit no doubt. In fact I think it was for Jimmy.

Andrew, you like Barnes right? Know him, personally?
