Why Not Cain?

I have heard many on here speak of who might be a good producer for this Band. I have heard of Elson, Mutt Lange, Brian eno and even Steve Perry as all being good producers.

If Perry can do it, and he does it brilliantly, why can't Jon Cain produce Journey?

Well, first off, you need a CD out to produce in the first place, but let's assume they throw another one out there next year. Do you think Cain would be a good choice?

He is the "nerd" of the Band, and I mean that in the nicest way. He has his laptop on the Whale, and knows all about technology.

Comments?

Jon Cain helped produced Journey's Red 13.
Although I had no qualms with the sound, the consensus of many online fans was that the results were less than satisfactory.

No, i don't think the band needs a member to produce them. Over look production maybe. But they need outside help. Like the Perry era did. Perry produce only one Journey cd, and thou it was a crystal clear production, it was one of the things wrong with ROR.
Shirley, Stone were great on their Journey outings. The other producers for Generations, and Infinity, and Evolution were good. Departure and Dream after Dream, red 13 didn't match the Journey sound to me.
I stated in another thread just a few minutes ago, I thought Mutt should give the band a try.-ERIC

Red 13 we can all agree was something different.

I would like to see his touch on the proverbial glossy, polished Journey sound. Maybe he doesn't want the challenge of trying to make Augeri sound decent. Maybe he said, "Screw this." It's useless.

Kind of like arguing with you :D -

I don't think Neal likes the polished sound. I do. One of the reason I hated music in the early 90's was the sound was rough, was lacking production values.-ERIC

I agree. The only album I can remember being stunning sound & production wise in that era was Metallica`s Black Album. It`s still good to this day.

On topic: Kevin Elson was good for Journey.I`m sure he has a laptop these days. 8)

And, Kevin Elson produced Generations and completely ruined Augeri's vocals.

This is really an irrelevant question until Journey schedules some time to actualy write songs together. Until then, the 'producer' has nothing to produce.

And, BTW, Neal did an AWESOME job with Hardline. Neal and Jonathan can both produce, IMO...

Agreed, although Elson's live sound is outstanding.

Yeah, Generations would have most likely come out differently, had Neal been more involved in the production end, IMO.

Weird, I and some others hear the exact opposite on Generations. If I'm not mistaken although Elson was the producer of the album as a whole, didn't Mike Fraser work with Augeri during the sessions?

Your stereo is a piece of shit.
Try playing it on something else.
Augeri has never sounded better.
On Arrival he was always muddled.

LOL...even if that is true, NOTHING I hear has as bad vocals as Generations. I can listen to something like Chicago XXX or something old like the first Damn Yankees album...and the vocals are OUTSTANDING. The vocals on Generations simply don't soar. Arrival may be 'muddled', but at least there isn't constant hiss and annoying voca anamolies. IMO, it's the worst vocal production on a Journey album since "Dream After Dream".

Maybe you people who think Augeri sounded like shit on Generations will finally understand he just flatout can't sing.

Elson isn't God, you know. He can't make shit into flowers.

Quote from Tom Size(engineer on Generations) re: vocal production on Butterfly:

Well, we worked hard...and fast on this record. It was tracked on analog tape, then transferred to ProTools, where we did all the overdubs. The glitches you hear on "Butterfly" was due to the fact that we loved the Demo vocal so much we used that for the record. It took a little manipulation to get the vocal the to fit the new track. All these vocals were done in a two week period, Raised on Radio took six months.

Cheers,
Tom Size

And this about Generations:

I have to say, I'm not wild about the overall sound of this record. I think the songs are great with some really good performances, but the mixing just doesn't have the depth that it should, and I'm not talking reverb. Sonic space. The basic tracks ( Drums, Bass, Guitars, and Keys) were recorded by Mike Fraser. I did the vocal overdubs and some other additional parts, then Mike mixed it. Bottom line, good CD...could be better.

I like overproduced albums too. I loved the sound of Arrival. Generations to me sounds muddled...no matter what stereo I use, so it ain't that.

Augeri seems to be mixed under the guitars almost, I dunno. I know Neal likes to stand out on the records, but it was at the expense of the vocals this time around. There's no reason why EVERYTHING can't stand out.
