That is even more success then Journey...and Chicago still has charting albums and doesn't have to give them away with a concert ticket.

I saw Chicago along with Earth, Wind & Fire 2 years ago. Amazing! The horn section just adds something to it.

Ya know, Deano may not want to hear this, but you could draw a lot of comparisons between Chicago and Journey. Both started off more "prog" or jam oriented. Both brought in a lead singer who took over the spotlight. Both then went down a path of balladry. Both were huge in the 80's. Both "lost" their lead singer yet continued on with a similarly voiced replacement.

Terry Kath was someone Jimi Hendrix inlfuenced...but, I doubt Jimi would be very impressed with anybody replacing Terry Kath.

I think I read somewhere that Jimi Hendrix was very complimentary about Terry Kath's guitar abilities. I think it was in an old Guitar Player magazine. Or I could have heard it on the Chicago behind the music episode. So basically, Kath was good enough to impress Jimi Hendrix, and that says a lot!

I am a big Chicago fan as well. I like the old stuff, and I like the new stuff. The new album is pretty awesome... a tour-de-force of melodious / layered singing, ala some of that Journey/Queen Roy Thomas Baker work. Scheff sings his ass off. It's primarily ballad material, but I've always loved the three David Foster Chicago albums... and it's definitely in the same vein.

Lot's of talent in that band, and I think they constructed a really great album. I can listen to it and keep hearing new things. If you are a musician, it is full of great ideas and playing. I can hear the HEAVY usage of Antares Autotune on the album... it definitely sounds like it was recorded with Pro Tools. But it is great... I got it the first day it came out. Rare to be able to find an album like this out there nowadays.

I don't think he's been given the chance to really step up in the band. With so many accomplished musicians in the band... so many people who have something to contribute to the music... I think he got lost in the shuffle of this new album. The credits on it show that other guitarists "guested" on a lot of it, and I'm under the impression he only played on like 1/2 of it. I haven't read the liner notes for a few weeks, but I am not of the impression he had all that much of his songwriting on it.

I've been on Howland's website, and he has a few cds he's done on his own (there are samples there)where he really smokes on lead guitar. This guy has great guitar chops, and he has the ability to sing really well (I've heard his vocal version of IF YOU LEAVE ME NOW on the Live by Request DVD and it was pretty good), so he also has the talent to add a lot to the background vocals. His live playing is a bit restrained, but that's because he likes to remain faithful to the original songs. I'm glad he does that, because nobody wants to hear Yngwie Malmsteen-type shredding licks in this band.

In summary, we've only heard a fraction of what he's capable of in this band, and this may be because he chooses to be a team player.

In addition, to anybody that's interested, Howland did a notable guitar heavy track on their recent Christmas album that is worth seeking out!
