Journey in "Surround"...

Feels like this:

Mark is in the Chicago area right now; I'll be joining him tomorrow...but right now, I have the house to myself, so I finally got to see/hear "Journey's Greatest Hits" in 4-speaker Surround Sound, volume UP:

1 next to the TV; 2 on the floor; one on the fireplace mantle...

...and me, in the "sonic cross-hairs".

Oh my GOD

Even when SP didn't have to sing (ie, in taped videos) he DID.

It was thrilling, but kinda sad, at the same time....and, for what it's worth, I think I finally understand why people thought he was so "aloof" or whatever....

He wouldn't talk to people very much because he had to protect the Voice...hell, in the state I'M in right now with the tree-pollen, I could totally relate!! I tried to practice today, and I sounded like SHIT!!

People don't realize something about singers: Our voices are organic. Natural. Internal.

If Neal had a sinus allergy, WHO CARES?? Does that impede the way he plays?? NO.

People think that singers are a bunch of diva-flakes. Well, sorry about that...

Our instrument is one that could be messed up by Allergens...don't hear any other guitar/bass/keyboard-players or drummers having the same complaint.

Jeremey, if you're out there, please chime in on this...

Nora, I take it was pre 98, if you were watching a live show.

Nothing however, beats the stupendous live showmanship and quality of current day Journey! Nothing! Even through pnuemonia, bad voice problems and such, Mr. Awesome just gets better and better. Actually, he is flawless!

WOOHOO!

This is very true...Singers are sometimes rightfully accused of being divas, dickheads, assholes, and prima donnas...There's a real beef there that people can have with the egos some people bring to the table. In most cases I've seen, there's no reason for the egos...Normally the higher on the food chain you go, the cooler people seem to be.

But the thing that trickles down about this reputation is that if, as a singer, you have a legitimate issue that is inherent only to singers, other people who don't understand may view that as being arrogant or a prima donna or worse. You have to be extremely careful about saying, "Nobody smoke in the green room" or "I'd rather not talk for the next 5 hours" or the wrong people may take it the wrong way.

As for allergies - Good Christ, this year has been the worst I've ever seen. Been to an ENT at Duke U twice this year to get a camera down my vocal cords, I'm on 3 types of prescriptions, including one for reflux, and still have that crappy gravelly rasp. Luckily, my voice has never failed me come showtime, but I've got about 25 shows over the next 6 weeks, so I'm hoping things are okie dokie...

Man, if I had the vacation time, I'd love to do something up that way! If you can believe it, I booked up all my 12 days of vacation time by the end of March this year. Freakin' day jobs. Give me some health insurance and I'm outta there!

Just one problem...

The GH DVD is not remastered for surround sound. I would think somebody who has such an ear for music would know the difference. The only way you can hear Perry in surround is with the Houston DVD.

That's why I put Surround in quotes...I was LITERALLY SURROUNDED by the sound.

I don't care WHAT anyone says....You listen to the GH DVD the way I did, and you'll feel the same way.
