Info on Steve Perry

Hi, I'm new to the forum, and I live in the UK. Where we are starved of Journey and Steve Perry.

I first got into Journey when I heard the Escape album back in the 80's. I loved Steve's voice then and still do - and before anyone yells at me, I don't have any albums with Steve Augeri on - but I will rectify that shortly. Amazon is my next stop after posting this!

I recently got the Greatest Hits & Escape Tour DVD's and have SO enjoyed them. I was never lucky enough to see the band on stage , so the DVD's are a real treat for me!
There is a sad lack of information over here, and I see from the forum that there is a lot of arguing about Perry versus "the new guy" as Neal called him last month in a magazine article - I don't want to get into all that, I just wondered if anyone knows what Steve Perry is up to these days?
Is he in good health? Where is he living? Is he happy? Married? Kids?Does he have a Fan Club or Management address etc etc.

I'm not a stalker, or anything, I'm just curious about the man whose voice still moves me after all these years.
We're getting a little bit of press over here in the UK about the current line-up because of their recent appearances here (their first in 26 years!) - but still no word on what Mr Perry is up to.
If anyone can let me have any info, it would make my day.

Perry has made a few public appearances like the White Sox Championship gathering and the Journey Hollywood Walk Of Fame gathering. He was a music consultant for the movie "Monster". He did some background vocals on David Pack's last CD and before that for Jeff Golub's CD. He has also been working on classic Journey DVD's.

Not much else that we know of. Perry likes his privacy.

He certainly does. I just watched a clip of him with the White Sox.
I wonder why he is so reclusive? But, you have to respect his privacy, I suppose.
I have his solo albums, and I play them and my Journey albums regularly, but it would just be nice to hear what he's up to from time to time. And how he is doing health & happiness-wise.
Hopefully now I have found this Forum, I will be able to keep up with his (rare) appearances.
I wish he'd write a biography, too! Then I could find out what really happened all those years ago when he and the band went their separate ways.

Thanks I'll have a look. I've not had internet access for very long, so I'm just finding all these wonderful American sources of information.
Honestly, the UK is useless when it comes to this kind of music. And Steve Perry may as well not exist as far as the UK press is concerned. And Journey have only just started to appear on the radar again, now they have done some live shows here again.

There isn't a biography out in the States is there?

No official biography. There is a 'rare' book by Robyn Flans that shows up on Ebay once in a while. Perry has said that he has been requested a bio but he has never done it. And Journey cannot do one without Perry's involvement.

I'd love to read one by Steve or the band themselves, but I can see why they would all have to agree before it could be done. Shame they can't come together again.

I don't really know what went on between the band, but there seems to be bad blood now.
And conflicting stories.
As I said, info over here was very thin on the ground. And even thinner now.
All I heard was that Perry said they wouldn't wait for him to get his hip fixed and replaced him with Augeri because he wouldn't tour when they wanted him to.
And the rest of the band said Steve just wouldn't make a decision whether to tour or not, and kept them waiting so long that their patience ran out.
There's a Don Henley lyric which says, "there's three sides to every story, yours, mine and the truth."
I guess that applies here.

I have done a google search as I said in my reply above. The fan clubs I've found seem to be unofficial ones. I have found perryville and fan asylum and a few interviews he's given in the last few years.

None of the info on him seems to be current, though, does it? So maybe my being in England hasn't made that much difference! Maybe there is no info to be had! And here was me thinking I was missing out.

I'm picking up a sad vibe from him in these interviews, though - but maybe I'm wrong. I do hope he's happy and healthy.

I don't want to start any arguments (I can see from reading other threads on here that there have been problems in the past) - but is it true that his voice is shot from all the live shows they did at the time? Is that why he is reluctant to record any new stuff?
I've read posts referring to this on here, but I haven't found any interviews etc to confirm that. Anyone know, please?

That quote he made about 'doing some scales' and 'seeing what he's still got' does indicate he has had voice problems. Which makes me very sad if it is true.

I just thought that he was still working, but that us in the UK just hadn't been kept up to date. Little did I know that there is not much to be kept up to date with. However, I'm finding out what there is to know now I've finally got myself online! Isn't the net wonderful!

I am lucky enough to make my living from singing, though, so if I can help anyone with vocal health tips or whatever, I will try.
I usually do 3-4 gigs a week, 52 weeks a year.
I guess the circuit here is a bit different to the States, or maybe not.
I perform in various places in the UK, theatres, clubs, casino lounges, good old British pubs - all sizes. And I travel miles to and from the gigs.
I do all kinds of stuff depending on the venue & the crowd. I do jazzy stuff, rock, pop - anything to earn a living. My boyfriend is in the band too. I do lead vocals, he plays drums, percussion and sax. We perform covers, not original stuff because we just can't get enough gigs to make a living unless we cover standards & classic stuff.
But, hey - I'm just thrilled to be able to sing for my job.

The magazine isn't stocked by my local store, and they said they could "try" and get it for me.
Dunno about you, but "try" isn't what I want to hear!

So, I called the UK number on the website, they are sending me a back issue of the one with Steve's interview. I mailed them a check today.
So let's see if it arrives.
The magazine doesn't seem to have a wide circulation here - hardly surprising if the large newsagent stores don't stock it, is it?
I will see what the mag is like when (if) it arrives, and if it seems good, I will subscribe to it just in case there are further interviews with Steve.

I mainly get the UK versions of Classic Rock, Mojo and The Word - but Steve is invisible as far as these publications are concerned.
And the current line-up of Journey have only been mentioned briefly because of their live shows this year.

Usually, if the article is online, you can "crib" it (copy and paste with quotes, and also give the website address where it came from).

But with THIS mag, they don't have ANYthing online...and, the last time I was there, it looked like somebody "hacked" it.

So, I guess the best thing to do would be to give a "synopsis" of what was said...
