It has been a year???????

Postby Abitaman » Thu Jun 15, 2006 2:28 am

It has been about a year now since Generations was released. Looking back it is still high up on my Journey favorites. Behind Escape as the best studio cd for the band.
The cd contained all the classic elements from all Journey cds, some songs sounded like Infinity, some Escape, Frontiers, Departure, etc........
Really a great cd. Production was good, but not as good as could have been, but still good. Augeri stepped out and away from Perry's shadow. Deen to songs were great, as were the other members.
But what I getting at, was the cd giveaway. It think it was a great idea, but it shouldn't have been the whole cd. They should have picked about 6 songs and gave away and EP, then they could have sold the whole cd. Gave something to get people ready for the new cd. Any thoughts on that? Read in another thread they have a new cd planned for next year, should they follow the route they just went? Try a Ep giveaway with selling the whole cd, or get a record contract and do it the normal way, or just sell on web site, or as downloads, like from Itunes and the other companies out there
Any thoughts-ERIC

Honestly, I'd really rather see them return to a normal CD format in that they can do an EP/CD single or whatever if they want...maybe with some boinus tracks on it if they want that won't appear on the final album, but get the CD in stores first with some standard promotion and a standard record deal or at least a standard distribution deal.

Even after Gens was released I know people who had a hard time finding it in some stores. That certainly shouldn't be.

The album is great and surely the next one will be too. Go through the normal channels so everyone knows its out and has the chance to hear it. Maybe sell a few records in the process.

I'd really like to see them change management at this point. They're not getting sound advice on this and the records aren't getting pushed at all either.

I was one to suggest the Generations giveaway should be an EP. And I think they may have realized this when the time came to sell the CD, hence the bonus tracks. Jon mentioned working on a new CD next simmer...I hope they give it plenty of time. I don't want them to rush another CD out in time to tour the fall. Take the time off and give it a real go. Plan on an early spring release with a spring-fall tour!! And please Journey, get someone to promote the damn thing as well as agree to do the work yourselves!!

I agree with this, Eric.

Perhaps a management change would be for the best. Gens is as good, if not better, than any CD Journey has created, and any future CD needs the proper promotion to get their music to the public. To get that proper promotion you first need the right kind of management.

The band really stuck to its guns on Gens., though. Said they could make a profit on the record if it was tied in as a minor surcharge on the ticket price ala The Artist Again Known As Prince. They said they would release it retail later in the year with a mind towards making maybe a littel more $ but also to make it available to those who could not get to a show. I'll bet that the band and Sanctuary were even pleasantly surprised that the retail release debuted in the top 200 like it did given the number of people who already had the album from the tour.
Wouldn't mind if they did it the same way (release-wise) next time around. If they feel they can make the same or more $ and reach more people w/ it at the same time, then it may be more attractive for them to record and release records.
Gens is still pacing my #1 spot, can't believe how good the thing is.

I can't "Believe" it either! #3 for me, behind ESC4P3 and Frontiers.

I'll be surprised (pleasantly surprised if it means a new album) if they take the summer off. But if that's the case, hopefully they're writing as a unit on this tour.

The road seems to be a great source for writing inspiration for Journey.

Here's what I would like to see (ain't gonna happen though):

Write on the road next summer.

End the tour in Europe then go straight into a studio in Europe, one of those in a castle with a huge live room. Record.

Take the tracks back home and spend a good amount of time on post-production, not over producing, just tightening it up.

Album done by early spring, shopped to a label and ready to go for the summer tour 2008.
