"Great on record, terrible live" or vice versa

Everyone's got that song or two that you love off an album but that sounds awful live. Or the other way around.

For me:

I love the studio version of Higher Place, but it just doesn't work live. Same with Wheel in the Sky. I've always hated Wheel in the Sky live...the vibe of the song is just totally different.

And I think The Party's Over and Escape are awesome live. But the stuidio version of Party's Over is one of the most abysmal damned things I've ever sat through, and Escape just bores me on the record. Only the Young fits into this category for me too.

You guys feel this way about any songs?

I hate AWYWI live because it is so different from the studio version.

I LOVE the studio version of ESC4P3 and The Party's Over, and they both sound great live to me (esp. the Houston versions).

I agree about Higher Place. Studio is better. I like the live version of WITS better because it is so much more energetic, plus I like the different live endings.

For me though I think some may disagree
it's Don't Stop Believing I love the studio
but aside from the houston dvd I have never
cared for it live and flip that coin on the other
side it's Open Arms that one live owns me musically!

Pretty much everythin g from Journey is better live, however, "Only the Young" has never sounded that strong live (especially the vocals whether it be Perry or Augeri) and I heard a boot of "To be Alive Again" and it was brutal...didn't even sound like the song. Wheel in the Sky is an example of a song I ONLY listen to live...the studio version is kinda dull in comparison.

never cared fro AWYWI live, althugh I do have a boot from Perry and Augeri that do the song justice. Never cared for Open Arms live by either singer.
From Perry, Mother Father rocked, though he stimbled through the wprds a lot of times. Don'T Stope Be. great live too.
Augeri LTS great, as is Escape-ERIC

Mother Father is just one of those magically
magnificent songs and I must say the Houston
DVD shows it's brilliance live though I think
I prefer it on Escape.

He rocked on that one, as on most. But I just don't like watching him on it-ERIC

The first live Journey I heard was from the Raised On Radio special, Girl Can't Help It. After hearing that and then hearing the studio I always felt SOMETHING was missing.

That said I still enjoy the studio version, but not as much as the live one.

Always love hearing Journey LIVE! It's where the band lives. Great question, by the way.

I have a boot of "The Party's Over" from 81 with an extended guitar solo on it. LOVE that version..but the Escape dvd/cd version falls flat with me without it. Got another boot of Frontiers from 83...HORRIBLE Live. MUCH better studio. Might sound better today though with Deen helping on the "One the Border...One the changing skyline" part. I was just Steve Perry taking ALL the parts of that. Great studio song though.
I'll Be Alright Without you is one that I love Live and don't really enjoy the studio. I think this one's also because of the Live "add on" with the "Someday Baby..." thing.

Sometimes I forget to do that whence refering to that masterpiece, and sometimes I just don't feel like it. Way more work, Dave, than just typing "Escape."
Though I do admit, it typing it that way does have a certain Notre Dame (Christ and the Old Deano forgive me, Nig) player rubbing Touchdown Jesus for luck cool feel about typing it thata way.

It so damn well does, doesn't it JoePa!
:D
Takes me back to 11 again.
Thank you everyone that takes the time to type
E5C4P3
in original form.
It makes all the difference in the size of smile
on my face at the time!

A "vice versa."
Prefer the punked-out Schon supercharged version of Dead Or Alive on the Escape DVD to the also cool one on the album and Time3. Some don't like it due to the jumbled vox....bugs me too, but not enough not to think the Houston version completely smokes.

Holy CRAP. Not only did I misquote once..but TWICE. I Really AM delerious. lol
"ON The Border...ON the Changing skyline..."
THERE WE GO.

I DID Think of a few more songs I like better live...
La Raza Del Sol KICKS ASS live as do Edge Of The Blade and Escape.

Neal Schon owns my backside when he wails
on that electric piece of wood man.
Dead Or Alive is one of their best rockers hands
down any old way.

I used to write JOURNEY ESC4P3 sideways, like it is on the album cover, on all the desks I sat in in high school. Wonder if they're still there? 8)

I prefer listening to "Stay Awhile" live, especially because it sounds so good linked to "Lights".
Also,"I'll Be Alright Without You" from the GH DVD has a great drive, much better than the studio version.I really enjoy that inspired finale...
"Someday baby maybe your love will be mine...someday,someday-aay.." Ya know what I mean... 8)

And even better Augeri era with his ad lib ending vocals.

Yea, how's that go Tails? It gets bluesy....something like, "hhhee YOU SAY...(something else)..." I like that, too.

I appreciate your sense of humor, but honesty I think the tune has been better performed by the current band, though they haven't done it often. I think its been Augeri's best ballad-type song live. I think he has expanded on Perry's delivery in the extended ending and Neal has embellished his own a bit.

I just love the GHL version of LTS, I must have listened to it 40 times in a row when I first heard that version.
