Lead Singer - NEAL SCHON?

Postby TRAGChick » Fri Jun 16, 2006 5:19 am

THIS one threw me for a loop...it's NEAL and NOT GREGG?

From 1980: "People & Places":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UsdRH79 ... d%20places

Wow, he sounds really good!!

....which just begs the question....

Hindsight being "20/20" and all - if Neal & Steve arranged ALL of their material in this fashion, Steve's voice wouldn't have "toasted out", right...?

But, then again, with Steve Perry wanting to SET THE WORLD ON FIRE with his voice (and let's face it, he DID) he probably would've "vetoed" that idea right then and there.

Oh, the possibilities...

Too many "critics" of multiple singers in a band. I always thought Neal should have sung more. Don't you have any Schon and Hammer albums?

Right....because if he DID, then there wouldn't be such an uproar of people saying, "Why is everyone ELSE singing now?"

To answer your other question...I'm aware of "Schon & Hammer" and "HSAS"...but nope...don't own either.

Neal doesn't sing on HSAS, but it is a must-own.

I really like this song.Too bad it never made it to the top as it should have.
Funny...I remember what Herbie Herbert said in an interview.
Looks like he is the one who forced Neal to take voice lessons,as Herbert's principle was "you can't be a musician if you can't sing" or something like that.
Although Neal didn't like the idea,he had to do it..."Doctor's" orders.. 8)
To my surprise,I think he has a nice voice.

I prefer his playing on the first Hardline album

The funniest part of this whole video is the fact that people in the audience are just sitting there, oh-so politely, like "Oh, this is nice...."

But IMO, Journey was still in the "trying to get known" phase, but hey, I could be wrong...and I KNOW you'll correct me... 8)

Notice how no-one is jumping around and screaming?

ONE YEAR LATER, and all hell breaks loose with "E5C4P3" (did I "spell" it right? heehee...)

Yeah, he's credited on the album sleeve as sharing lead vocals. I'm surprised it took so long to have him do it again.

Then again, I'm not surprised.

Nora,

That video, from how you described the audience, was from a Japan concert. Japanese politely sat there while a concert was played. I have never seen any Japanese who would do what we would do at a concert. Very different from us. :D

You do raise a very good point....

I just looked at it again; the video is so grainy, I can't really "see the people" in the audience shots.

See? I KNEW you-all would correct me...

I have always dug Neal's singing. Nothing fancy, like Perry, but good enough for Rock n' Roll. IMO, Neal's voice is better than some lead singers who have been making a living at it for years.

They'll cheer a bit more wildly once it's over, but...they have that signal light behaviour thing, like a traffic light, where if they get too boisterous--according to whomever controls it--then the show gets closed down. 8)

Me too, SF. And think how many singers would kill to have Deen's voice.

You know what I always loved about this song, not only did Neal sing lead w/Perry, but Gregg was singing the echo behind the verse while Neal was singing lead and then in the last verse when Perry sings lead Gregg echoes him. I love that all three were singing together on one song. I've always said if there had more of this, things may not turned out as they did. Too bad....

Yeah, even if you're not a major fan it's hard to confuse his voice with Rolie's.

Where have I been? Lemme see....

1980....I was 13 years old and going to roller rinks, skating to disco music.

All I heard of Journey at that time was what they put on the radio...mainly, LTS.

Does that answer your question? 8)

Unless you're 14 now, you've had a lot of time to figure it out, Nora.

Well, shocking as this is, I don't own any Journey CDs pre-1981

Yes I know...my bad....

I have the Time3 - why wasn't this put in there?? It's a great song!!

Perhaps, right about NOW would be a good time to expand my collection...
