Andrew wrote:A preface before today's news... There is much chatter regarding one particular artist and subject that has been going on over the last week or so. Yes, I am very much aware of it. I have a lot of e-mails...a lot. All asking if I am going to address this and/or talk about it. Of course. I am not ignoring it and it is something that has taken up a lot of time this week. That's all I have to say right now.

Could there be any doubt that it IS?

Of course it is.

And since you started a thread (shame on you, Dave  ) I wanted to share this post from The Noticeboard which, I feel, sheds some light into the prevalence of using recorded help on stage. And shows what a non-story this is. Thanks, Tony M.

You are mad if you think this doesn't happen regularly, technology allows it more and more......most of the big bands you see will have a lot more than BV's on tape nowadays.

My source wouldn't tell me anything more if I tell you his name....and it's not just Journey who do it....look towards Sweden and I'll bet one or seven of the bands weren''t totally live.

Industry standard mate, if you can afford it do it. If you can't afford to look and sound like crap it's worth it...isn't it?

I don't think this became the pain in Andrew's ass that it is now until some TOOL brought it to the noticeboard with a bout 5-6 posts until of course it got "noticed."
And it wasn't Deano who at least had the decency to stop it here and take it to his own place. now the place is nothing but a smoking ruin of tapegate or Journey fans are crazy whiny bitches topics.

I sincerely hope that wherever this goes, Andrew is able to talk to the band about it and it will to some degree put the debate to rest.

But honestly, what can even the band say that will quell some of the wackos? Neal will be "a fucking liar" no matter what.

Honestly the only way to fix this is for Augeri to prove his voice is fine. I see only two ways - another new album, or for them to perform (and him to sing) some new song live that they've never done before with him in the band. Hell I dunno...Do You Recall or something.

And even then it'll be "well he's on tape for everything else"

Seriously, no matter what happens there'll never be an end to this because some people championing the conspiracy theory refuse to ever be proven wrong on anything. Regardless of how illogical the whole scenario is.

And, an addendum. How come nobody's given a damn over the last decade that Jon Bon Jovi's been using a tape?

Maybe what Dean will accomplish with this, is to establish some ruling that a band should tell the fans ahead of time if they will be using this method , so that the fans can make up their mind if it's worth the ticket price to listen to a vocalist posturing to a tape.

If the name Journey wasn't so close to everyone's hearts, you could say, "oh well, all the bands are doing it," but I wouldn't believe anyone here who would say that they didn't care. What has been the basis for all our discussions here since this board started? Hasn't it all been about integrity, vocal ability and mainly, how the actions of the bandmembers can make it or break it?

Classic Journey has just acquired a new layer of gold. This new lineup isn't even in their league, imo.

Big Big BIG difference between beefing the sound up with canned background vocals vs. a guy standing there mouthing the words.

And even if 50% of bands are doing it, that's no excuse... it's wrong.

Darwin and HOTSie, of course presumably being among the # that assume every single allegation made regards to this is 100% true.

You can't expect everybody to be at the identical level of belief.

HOTS. Why are you putting utter credence in Dean's platform when the archives will indicate you and your boyz like MOFO laughed Dean off the board on his cancer and tried to make him utterly miserable over the train things? How about the Neal camp? Or getting backstage? None of your crew allowed that any of that was true.

Even those saying he IS doing it though have to acknowledge that he IS in fact singing his ass off, nobody's hearing it though.

The pro-audio board that someone posted that link from indicated he WAS in fact singing. It wasn't talking about him lipping, he's clearly not doing that in any case. It was that good audio was being pumped out to the crowd over his bad voice and his mic was being turned off.

If ANYTHING at all, if he's stil;l having vocal problems, this would indicate once and for all WHY.

I don't buy that he's 100% lipping at all. If he's using "sweetening" that's the nature of the beast and most people are, and right or wrong that's today's music scene and technology.

If he's having to have a guy flip a switch in the back, chances are also that it wasn't Steve's idea or suggestion either. The guy does have a family to feed. Doesn't excuse going along with it but we're not talking about a murder plot here either.

If he's got a problem I wish they'd get the HELL off the road and work through it and get him 100% again. I don't necessarily buy that he's even still got vocal problems though.

Shine up classic Journey all you want, but if today's technology had been available to Steve Perry in 1986 when he needed it (badly) he'd have used it in a heartbeat.

This is a quality bunch of guys we're talking about here. They're doing their damnedest to put on a good show for people. I simply cannot reasonably believe that Neal Schon and Jon Cain and Ross Valory would risk not only the good name of Journey but their bread & butter to get through a tour or three.

An addendum - let's list all the people who, if these allegations were true, would have their reputations in the music business utterly soiled, irreparably in some cases:

Neal Schon
Jon Cain
Ross Valory
Steve Augeri
Deen Castronovo
Kevin Elson
Steve Perry (you bet your ass he would - if there's confusion that he aint still the singer there'd be confusion that he was the guy lippin')
Irving Azoff
Every single member of the band's tech crew

That's one hell of a crowd willing to screw themselves in favor of a few bucks from a paltry half-house every other night over two or three tours.

What's Neal Schon stand to gain from this? At the end oif the day, all told, 50 grand? Maybe 100?

It doesnt add up people.

And even the chief accuser, Deano, has said Augeri sings Lights, WITS and a couple others. It don't add up. Boy can either go or he can't. It ain't like Lights don't have any high notes.

Hey NiG, did you see Tony Denander's defense of it as well. I found it interesting that someone who has heavily criticized Journey's "Generations" AND is trying to work with Perry would still defend the band here on this issue UNLESS he knows...

Big J - you made a very good point. Steve Perry WAS confused with Steve Augeri and accused in the lip synching hog wash. As a matter of fact, it happened right here on Melodicrock.com in the notice boards. Saw it this morning as a matter of fact.

Well, I guess the band could come out and admit to partial fault on this. They would, of course, have to minimize the extent of the use. And they would have to establish a solid reason why. Being specific with details might help.

Big J wrote:Honestly the only way to fix this is for Augeri to prove his voice is fine. I see only two ways - another new album,

That diesn't matter. You can do anything in the studio. In fact, that has been one point made about Perry recording. It doesn't really matter how he sounds while doing BV for David Pack...the proof would be live. You can use the White Sox thing if you want, but we all understand that is not completely realistic.

So, based on Andrew's statement (if it IS Steve Augeri), 'Drew says he will talk about it. He also says it's taken up a lot of time this week. Do you think he will talk to Steve about it with the (likely) pending interview RE: Tall Stories? Do you think he has been dealing with Journey management or the band...maybe looking at ways to 'properly' handle the subject? Could Andrew be on damage control for the band or do you think he might try to get to the truth in the matter?

I could not imagine anyone controlling Andrew's voice (right, Joe Elliott? ) My thoughts are that most bands do it, some more than Journey, some less. Other bands just don't have people bent on destroying them like Journey does.

Me either.

I saw them 2 weeks ago at the Monsters Of Rock festival here in the UK and they kicked ass! THe reception they recieved upon coming on stage had tripled by the time they left it...! Clearly the crowd were thoroughly entertained, that's gotta be a good thing!

I'm still find it hard to bring myself to believe Steve is lipping the majority of these shows. I'm a vocalist myself and i would NEVER suggest me going in front of a crowd and mime...i have a love for the craft as i'm sure all singers/musicians do, anything less isn't just selling the fans short its selling YOURSELF short too.

Right-O NIG. Which makes no sense as to why someone would want to destroy any part of Journey. Perry said emphatically...I'M NOT COMING BACK. Seems to me he meant, HE'S NOT COMING BACK. Don't like Journey? Don't listen. No one is forcing you and most casual Journey fans could care less who the lead singer is. They are there to enjoy the music (tapes, whistles, tamborines, banjos, bananas and what ever other anomalies may be required).

Instead of bashing what you don't like - go spend time with your families, take a deep breath and relax.

Well said i totally agree! I accept some level of sweetning live but if its all out lipping thats a ripp off.I pay to see musicians play and show there ability if they can no longer do that its over. Sportsmen leave when they know they are no longer at there best, just because you have the ability to fool people does not make it right.
Were do we go with on stage trickery? How about Led Zep reforming with Jason Bonham and miming to the Song Remains the Same live record would that be o.k?
As a paying punter i want to know whats real so i can decide if i want to spend my money on this kind of show.If someone sells me a Rolex and does not tell me it is a fake then i have been ripped off.Evan if some of that watch has a few Rolex parts.
The band (Journey) managed without taped vocals in 1981 if they cannot do that now....split up! Some people say what the heck its a show then why not get Perry back and tape the vocals off Houston 81 and tour whats the difference?
Were this go bands getting on stage and not playing and acting out old shows, there has to be a limit to how far you can go.
I love Journey and feel its a joy to hear Steve sing live if can no longer do this for me let me know as i will not pay him anymore, thats my right.
