I had the pleasure of seeing Journey in concert (with St. Augeri) three times and apart from the first show in 1999 the following shows he defenitly had vocal problems and with Castronovo's "help" the shows were saved.
BUT......I know from a very reliable source that most of the vocals for the 2001 official DVD have been re-recorded since Augeri had one of the worst nights on that perticular evening. Anybody who was at the show might be able to confirm this.
So it seems that the Journey camp actually used that "method" before.

Yup I was there.
There were some definite "moments" where I wondered if a particular tune was going to make the final cut or not. But low & behold those songs made it.
All except for "Message Of Love".

They used it decades before the 2001 DVD also! In fact, everyone went back in the studio years ago to finish off their "live" records. Do you think a botched note or cracked voice in an otherwise perfect performance would have made a CD like Captured?

Jeremey, everybody knows that 90% of all live albums/dvd´s on this planet has been fixed/overdubbed so it will sound the best way possible
for their fans when they purchase it later.
But the bootlegs speaks for themselves, have a few now with both Perry and Augeri and why is it always that Augeri´s vocal perfomance sounds exactly the same every night while Perry had his ups and downs (mostly up´s though).
I think it´s time for the band to tell their fans there´s a taped version coming out of the PA system.
I sing myself and have been doing that for the last 25 years and it´s impossible to do the same melody lines night after night with the same start and ending on every phrase.
But hey, that´s perhaps the new way of commenting the future shows - yeah, great miming tonight!

Hey Kaj!
Yes, I know the boots are always straight from the horse's mouth, and I've heard Perry-era boots that were amazing, and I've heard ones with a few clunkers, not only from Perry but from the rest of the band. I've yet to hear a full bootleg concert from Augeri, but I've heard enough comparisons made to know that the recorded "backup system" has apparently become the main means of getting through a show, and that to me is a bit more than just getting an "assist" through technology. I think the OP's point was that the Vegas DVD was re-recorded before it was commercially released, which is why I mentioned that something like that is pretty common.

And we knew that is exactly what was going to happen Red13. Doesn't matter what is said, they will be torn to shreds on this forum.

Can't say it isn't earned.

It's getting ridiculous, I agree.

It is, but if it proves to be true, then it's deserved. Faking your lead vocals is not an option. That's when you say to the fans "hey, our singer is having some issues with his voice, we're going to take a year/18 months off to let him figure it out." But...that didn't happen.

Problem is the leap from Andrew's report that on the Generations tour, although Steve was always singing, they had to give him help to a dvd of an Arrival tour show being completely done vocally in the studio.
Now it's this one saying, "Come to think of it, I saw him turn his back on the audience during a 2002 show"
that one saying, "I heard what sounded like a skip of a tape in 2003"
and this one saying, "ya know, now that I think about it, parts of BGTY in the 2004 show sounded close to the Vegas dvd"
and that one saying, "Kevin Elson. HHHmmmmmm why is HE there ?"
and now there are threads of mysetery guitar players and fake singing on the houston '81 dvd.

And don't forget the shit-stirrer who claims Augeri's mouth didn't synch up to the wailing that was heard when the doctor slapped his bottom back in '59.
