Ok, believe it or not, this has nothing to do with tapes or miming.

I was thinking maybe Journey could do something like this. Take a ballad and speed it up to a mid tempo number.

Here is Bryan Adams' Heaven. Sounds really good to me. Taken from "Live in Lisbon."

I should not say it anymore. When Jon was young, there was a fire in a Chicago school, and he had endured emotional scars from that and I think he changed his name because of that...however, I could be wrong.

I named my son Bruce Jonathan. After Springsteen and Cain.

That would be cool...an acoustic set would be a nice touch. Toto's been doing an acoustic set on their European tour that included "Cruel" and "Stop Loving You," which was pretty interesting.

Or...they could just stop playing Open Arms and stick to music that's slightly less nauseating, like...any other song in their catalog. I love Journey, but man I can't stand that song.

While I see your point, I'm not sure that would work for the casual fan ... which is primarily the audience at a concert.

I'm only familiar with Journey through their radio hits. I'm familiar with Open Arms (and it's stilled played frequently on the radio here). If Journey performed it differently in concert than what I hear on the radio it would leave me wondering "what's wrong/off with that song?"

I'm not saying your idea is bad, I actually think it's good, but I don't think the majority of the audience would like it.

Die hard fans of any band tend to enjoy deviations in songs, but the majority of people at a concert aren't die hard fans.

The majority of the audience is the type that have heard the songs on the radio and go to a concert expecting to hear those same songs performed the same way as the studio version.

On a positive note, if more bands did this frequently then those folks at a concert might get into the concept of a live, raw concert and embrace the difference between a studio cut and the fresh adventure in the difference of a live performance.

Ironically, this is a problem Styx has. They refuse to play some of the biggest hits since they were originally written (and performed) by Dennis, so ultimately, by not playing them, they don't really help their own cause when people walk away not hearing, say, "Babe" or "The Best of Times" even though they don't rock. Journey will have the same problem if they ignore "Open Arms" forever. Morphing it into something else isn't a bad idea.

a quicker tempo than the studio version.
It also sounds like they added more of Neals wailing
when they did it live.

Bryan's "Heaven" is one of my all time favorite songs! It's been etched in my mind in it's original form for so many years I never thought I would like to hear it in another way.
To my surprise,I loved so much the way Bryan changed it for the Lisbon show,I found myself forgetting about the original and digging the new version.Just beautiful!
So yes,I think Journey could really be open minded and try working on a change.
Anyway,I wouldn't mind to hear a fresh version of Open Arms as long as they would keep the feeling of the song.
I don't thing Steve Perry would mind either as long as Journey wouldn't record the "new" song and would only play it in concert.

Btw,"Heaven" reminds me a bit of "Send Her My Love"...But maybe it's just me.

We had a local station here (still here) that used to do "live weekend concerts", they'd play record, with live sounds mixed in. SO bogus. I called the DJ to ask about it, and he hung up on me. Go figure. It's called the entertainment industry for a reason, but that doesn't mean everyone is entertained equally, if at all. Playing a song exactly like it already was recorded does nothing for me.

That's why I like Kansas so much. They don't necessarily change up the setlist from night to night, but there is always something different in almost every song. Sometimes there is an extended jam. Sometimes the vocals are different. Sometimes they'll throw in a medley from some of their older stuff. They keep it interesting for themselves and the fans. I wish Journey would do something like that.

Come to think of it...Doing that would also lessen the likelihood that someone would accuse you of lip-synching the show.

I don't know if it would lessen the chances of accusals. Anyone could pre-record a medley and lip it or whatever every night. Not so hard to do. The only way, MAYBE is for an all request show that stops mid song and changes to a different song. Even that would be a way to lip, if someone wanted to.

Nothin' beats singing live.....either hearing it or being the person performing it.
