Well, it's well known that Neal was packing socks back in the day, so perhaps Steve borrowed a few.

I just watched that. You can't turn it off, it so good. See, that was REAL singing. The only tapes in Houston Summit that night were recording, not playing.

Yea, if all this stuff with the current line up is getting some of you down, then just PLAY the "LIVE In Houston 1981 Escape Tour" DVD/Cd to remember the way Journey USED to be & to SEE Journey perform at their VERY, VERY BEST!!! :D

Actually, I think Perry sounds horrible on that concert. I watched it once and put it back in the case.

I know i'm in the minority though.

It's an ok concert as filmed/taped concerts go, and it will always have as I remember the night it first aired, Mark Goodman stating the distinction that it was Mtv's VERY FIRST concert being aired on that channel. You know, back when they actually played music. At least no one can take that distinction away from them.

Oh and Tom, no I wasn't meaning to look, It's right ther in front of you when you watch the show.

You just had to get your little bit of bitchin' in there, didn't you ?

Do you need to get some fix every possible opportunity about that topic that currently seems to account for practically every post on this board ?

Yes, I agree - you've probably proved your point (at least as far as you're concerned) so please show some grace and leave the other different topics alone so that others may enjoy reading them without seeing your predictable flaming...

Cheers,

I agree that the Houston concert has some great moments. However, it's not actually 100% live according to Steve Perry.

"I will tell you... we did two shows and on the day-off between those shows... we knew we were on tour and we knew it would be aired on MTV with a quick mix. So, we got around one mic and sang the backing vocals against ourselves. So, that we could blend that studio thing we do with the live vocals; so that they would have a little shimmer to them. That's the only thing we did. We called that 'vocal help.'”

Your point being, what, JeremyP? Everyone already knows that. Backing vocals to fill in are nothing new or noteworthy. Maybe next you'd like to suggest that Steve Perry was lipsynching? I read some time ago (I think it was Randy Jackson saying this) that he would amaze them and the crew during soundchecks for ROR singing all kinds of stuff, even opera. Don't watch the Houston DVD unless you want to feel sick about what is happening with the Journey name now.

Goodness no, I'm not suggesting Steve Perry was lip synching. (I hate it when they call it "lipping" :) )
I think you can tell by watching and listening to that show that he's very definitely not.

I'm just saying that even the Perry lineup was no stranger to being "less than 100% live."

For what it's worth, I am a fan of both lineups (and of the pre-perry stuff as well), and while I do feel that Steve Augeri has used pre-recorded vocal tracks on some (not all) songs during recent concerts, it still doesn't feel Britney Spears enough to make me not a fan.

I appreciate what all the different incarnations of Journey have brought to the table, and they've all made my life happier and more enjoyable. (cuz i get to rock out to some great songs!!) :D

Holy Hell I just did a double take on that on Fire Inside.

My vote goes to Japan 1980 (Gregg's last show I think!) for the Perry era and the Vegas 2000 show (the dvd) for the Augeri era :)

there's a differnece between "livening up" (ironic) a concert, and "livening up" a DVD/video release. Kids don't care about Britney lipping, most likely they aren't paying hard earned money to go see her. I've heard her live and she needs all the pre-recorded vocals she can get by with. Even Janet Jackson said long ago, when fans said she was "lipping", that there was no way she could be so "physical" onstage and still be able to sing.

I have no problems with fixing things later for a video release or to be aired on some TV outlet. Did they fix things before the sound went out to the Houston Crowd the night of the concert(s)? I seriously doubt it.

I've been bleating on for years to my friends how great Journey is and took the Houston DVD round to show them. I said to them, "check out the vocals and guitar work...you'll be hard pressed to find better!"

Thei opinion of the Schon was agreed, but their opinion on Perry wasn't exactly positive. The said that although he has amazing range, his pernounciation of a lot of the lyrics is terrible and can't understand a lot of what he is singing and I have to agree.

Perry was always hard to understand live. He could have been speaking jibberish for all anyone knows. That much is true. Did he amaze live? Absolutely. heck, even without the lyrics printed out word for word, it was hard to understand some of his lyrics. At you knew the idea of the song, ya know?

I hear you. I totally agree with you about the Britney thing. *shivers*

In my opinion, any kind of tampering with the true live sound of a concert, whether it be backing or lead vocals, is wrong. That goes for radio broadcasts, tv broadcasts, dvds...ect.

An example that springs to mind is Journey's "Captured" album. The backing vocals are somewhat "overly layered" sounding, and whenever I listen to it I always think, "But that's not what they really sounded like in concert :( (it's been well documented in several interviews that they went back and touched up the backing vocals)

I've heard some of the original "undoctored" songs that went on that album and they sounded excellent in their original form, no need for any enhancments.

I'm rambling here, and I do apologize.

I hope that no one goes to a Britney Spears, Madonna, Janet Jackson, or any pop act's show and expects to hear 100% live vocals. It just ain't gonna happen.

However, Journey is a band , not an act and i think that's what makes all the difference.

About the Houston show, while I do think that there are some really great performances there, I found Perry's voice to be kinda shakey and "vibrato-y" that night. Not my favorite Journey show, but still enjoyable for me to watch :)

I really think what's kept me from "jumping ship" and being all anti-Journey or anti-Augeri or whatever about this lip syching thing, which I am of the opinion is true based what I've heard with my own ears, is that I think that they're only doing it because they have no other choice and that they don't enjoy it, but there's no other way around it right now.

sure there is, to stop completely.

I'm not Anti-Journey or even Anti-Augeri, I'm anti fake/scam/lie. There's no reason for a band to do what they are doing/were doing. Postpone concerts if you have to, if you can't and you resort to "sweetening up" the sound to make it sound live, then it's just and ACT (your word). If they didnt' enjoy faking people out, they wouldn't do it. That is to say, if there wasn't money involved, they would say something.

I definitely see your point. I'd just like to think that have more musical integrity than to do this (lip synch on certain songs) when they don't absolutely have to. I wonder if they've "made certain investments" that are dependant upon them keeping a rigorous touring schedule (To paraphrase Ross from Behind The Music), like new houses and things. :?:

Maybe I'm being totally naive here.

I can say that if anyone suggested to my band that we lip synch (or use any sort of "offstage enhancement") during our shows, the door would be promptly shut in their face. So I totally see where you're coming from.

depending on who you want to believe, they didn't invest well at all, or dumped the ones that they had. Most all accounts if not all say, Perry was the only one that did invest wisely.

Plus alimony etc. who knows what else. It's almost like the people who stand on the roads and ask for money, some of them need it, some make more than you & I, doing that.

Thank you for replying I was really curious.
Usually I am a bigger fan of studio recordings as
well.....with me though I think it's a jealous thing
when I hear live stuff from any band I like I'm jealous
and want to be there.
Odd I know but there are only a few live albums I ever
cared for.
Journey~Captured
Wings~Wings Live Over America
Great Big Sea~Road Rage
John Mayer Trio~Try

Captured is ok but it's definitely one of my least played Journey albums. I don't like how they speed up many of the songs live and I never liked how Perry was often incoherent and high-pitched. I get used to the songs on the original albums so they never sound as good live. JMO.
