Uncle Joe & lipsynching

Postby LAWoman » Mon Jun 26, 2006 1:43 pm

For those of you who don't know, Uncle Joe is a L.A. radio legend who is now on KLOS and has done many interviews with Journey & Steve Perry.

Remastered & Lip Synced?
Former lead singer Steve Perry has been busy behind the scenes supervising the remastering and repackaging of five of Journey's most successful albums. The new packages, expanded with a few bonus tracks and memorabilia-rich booklets, will be out on August 1st. 1978's "Infinity," which marked the debut of Steve Perry, and 1979's "Evolution" retain their original track lists, while 1980's "Departure" will include two bonus tracks. The multi-million-selling 1981 album "Escape" will include live versions of "Don't Stop Believin'," "Who's Crying Now" and "Open Arms" from the recent archival CD/DVD "Live in Houston," plus the studio track "La Raza Del Sol." The 1988 "Greatest Hits" compilation will now also include the 1996 single "When You Love a Woman."

But back on the concert trail, the current version of Journey is beginning their Summer tour with Def Leppard under a cloud of speculation that frontman Steve Augeri has been lip synching while the rest of the band plays live. For some reason, the band hasn't offered an official response to the allegations yet. But let me say these two things: #1, Steve Augeri sure wasn't lip syncing when I was on stage with the band; #2, No one I've ever met (and I've met them all) is good enough to lip sync Journey music for an entire concert — Journey songs are intense vocal workouts. The only thing more stupid than suggesting that is buying into the story.

Seems one of his fellow DJs, Joe Reiling, feels differently. He is on the same station....KLOS 95.5 in Los Angeles. Friday night he recounted the allegations with the comment "I hope we don't have another Milli Vanilli". He proceeded to give the blog address.

I believe others heard the same thing from other DJs.

Joe has never mentioned it at all during his show. His personal comments were posted on his own website only...not the station's.

This is also the same station that hosts Bob Coburn's "Rockline" which has canceled Journey's July 12 interview.

Uncle Joe answers his e-mail. Why don't you ask him. Uncle Joe seems to show up at about every L.A. show I got to, so I cannot remember exactly which Journey show he last attended. Probably last years two shows but like I said--ask him. He'll talk about it. Better yet call his show and he'll probably talk about it.

Thanks for the clarification.

Joe is correct that the band has not addressed the issue. Now, it has reached his show and he has spoken about it. Obviously, he knows it’s a damaging allegation since he stated: “For some reason, the band hasn't offered an official response to the allegations yet”.

Joe needs to be told that the band does not need to address the allegation-as stated by some fans here (which is total crap in IMO). It’s too bad the band seems to agree with these fans. It may cause the band to continue under that “cloud” with some negative repercussions to follow from the general public. Especially since mainstream media is noting the lack of response.

On the other point...

We have already come to the conclusion that Augeri is not lip synching. I think Deano did clarify that point in a subsequent post. Joe is correct... technically, that is not what is happening. Lip synching is not what the band is (alleged) to be doing. They are (alleged) to be substituting live vocals with pre-recorded tracks and piping those pre-recorded tracks to the audience. So, it is possible that Joe did hear Augeri sing something.

However....what exactly did Joe hear? Did he hear what the audience is hearing or what Augeri is actually singing into the mic? Concerts are normally very loud. How well could he decipher what was what? Did the band know Joe was going to be on stage or did Joe just jump on stage (unannounced) out of the audience and surprise the band? There is a big difference to the band knowing a media personality is there and being totally surprised by an unannounced visit. Perhaps they knew they were going to be in his view. Anything is possible.

Well, since the band isn’t talking about this and has left it to the fans to squabble about, I must make my own conclusions. Joe’s spin (sorry..."opinion”) does nothing for me because the term “lip synching” has already been dismissed on the board. What does intrigue me is that the story is spreading and he has talked about it.

Technically, he IS lip synching....

Here is the definition- from Dictionary.com

To move the lips in synchronization with recorded speech or song.

Ok, so he may be singing and not plugged in, but they can't prove that either, becuase we aren't hearing HIS voice...the voice of the singer in front of us, at the shows.

So I used the term lip synch..So what? Ok, mouthing, miming, lipping, lip synching, Vanilli, whatever....pick your poison

That's exactly what I was going to say. We have to also remember that Joe has been a friend to Perry and Journey for many years and he seems like a really nice person. He's not going to want to do anything to put a cloud on the Journey name. He probably just thought he should make what he considered to be an appropriate(and technically accurate) statement because it was hard for him to avoid saying something when other DJs in his area are commenting.

For whatever else Uncle Joe says (and I like him alot, always have), THIS is the key line! His whole statement reads "uncomfortable." He is a huge Journey fan and i think he is just like many of us, wanting to be supportive of the band but having a tough time right now!

The silence is indeed deafening. If it were simply untrue, I would think they would have no hesitation to jump right out there and say so. The silence makes it seem like there is at least some truth to the allegations, whether there actually is or not.

Thank you for bringing that here, LAWoman. Did I ever mention how Steve Perry went ga-ga with love over that duo, Milli Vanilli, when they came out with their lipping song? Seems he loved the duo, thought they were great.

I remember when REM was a big deal and they never lip-synched to a music video. Then they came out with Losing My Relgion and everyone jumped because obviously Michael Stipe is not singing live. The explanation: Michael is singing, you just don't hear it.

I am sure Journey wants this referred to as lip-synching as much as possible so they can say 'No we didn't" and it will be the truth.
