I Think Perry Knew...

Postby Saint John » Wed Jun 28, 2006 11:26 am

that without him and Herbie guiding the band that it would only be a matter of time before the wheels came off the cart. I really think that's what he meant when he said "Don't crack the stone." He realized that they had a chemistry that could never be equalled. I wish Neal would've realized that too. The stone has been cracked and may not be repairable. They would've accomplished just as much WITHOUT Augeri as they would've WITHOUT Perry over the last 8 years. Nothing. They've actually taken a couple of steps backwards into the domain of of "another band who should've hung it up long ago." Perry realized that, without him, they were doomed. Azoff saw $$$$$ and didn't give two shits about their legacy. He figured keep touring, rake in $$$ and watch the catalog sales continue to flourish. That dude needs to be fired ASAP.

The scary thing is they know how much $$$there racking in because of it and don't care about the fans (who are mostly of blue collar back ground and have to work hard to see one of there shows). It's all very sad and a greedy way of life ....and if this be true then there's more bad karma thats going to be around then they've ever dreamed of...People talk about accusations and karma around here I hope everyone is taking that to heart ...or is the color green way to bright to care??

Just so you know Irving Azoff don't have much to do with journey these days, (tours and promotion) are living proof ,but it was neals idea to press on no matter what, (my oppinion) I think neal is trying to damage everything journey has ever worked for, just because it was too much for him and the others to give it some time, let Steve Perry get back on his feet, and during the down time give everyone a chance to re-unite as a band., You can't be away for all those years and just expect to cut an album and go on the road, people do change and the band needed time together to see how much of a change there was as a group, if given that time fans would of been blessed with many new journey albums.
In addition, the band & Steve Perry has went on record saying there's alot of music being stored waiting to surface, along with new ideas from each member, but for now they will continue to be stored.

If I'm not mistaken Perry fired HH and hired Azoff during his reign.

Due to personality clashes between Steve Perry& Herbie Herbert (Walter) was asked to step aside and let Irving Azoff boost a reunion tour, he did magic with the eagles, and had a (reunion) reputation for making bands from the past bigger than life, so journey (Not just Steve Perry) jumped on that wagon and rode away, it's unfortunate injuries stood in the way of this ever happening.

Like majority of bands, Journey was a business and ran like a business. It didn't matter who's feelings were hurt, everyone was looking out for the name of Journey.

Why do you think the door has always been open for Perry to return or come on for a special night? That would boost up the sales of the concert tickets, cd sales, merchandise, you name it!

Well, to some degree it's also what Dennis DeYoung has been saying about Styx - don't run the name into the ground. I don't think Perry necessarily thought without him and Herbie the wheels would come off the cart, because he got rid of Herbie and the rest of the guys were happy to jump on board since their cash cow said "let's go make an album". It's not about chemistry. As Suite said, rock bands are a business. Do you truly and deeply believe that these guys are the bestest buddies ever? Come on. Now, unlike Styx, the credits for songwriting are not just slanted towards one or two writers. So they all get money from radio play, CD sales, mechanical licenses, etc. Now, Ross, for example, would be the person (arguably) of the original Journey lineup who would benefit the most from touring since he didn't write much of the material.

Azoff has a history of being, shall we say, not the nicest guy. Shrewd business guy, and he is also part of the Styx story, too. Bands don't hire him for his looks.

Whatever the outcome, most of the bands we like - Journey and Styx - will never, ever get to where they were in the late 70s through the mid-80s. If more people realized this, life would be that much easier. Until then, you'll have camps of this side vs. that side, and people delusional thinking that <insert name of band here> can still chart a #1 hit.

Get over it. It's 2006.

You bet your ass it was a business, when Herbie ran it. Now Journey is ran like a bridal shop. If someone happens to walk in, they might serve you. other than that, they will bend over and ass-rape their most loyal fans.

Yes, I am still one.

Irving, you're band are scumbags led by you, the ultimate scumbag. Nice culture of ethics you run over there, old man.

This is a Journey forum. Perry was a HUGE part of Journey...and the main one for many of us.

But I guess your question could have been put to the likes of Monker who for some odd reason just
had to get involved in Steve Perry forums.

Here's what Herbie Herbert (Journey's former manager) said:

CRR: It was a real tug of war between you and the band.

Herbie: By 83-84, in that time period, the band would sit there in our Board of Directors room, at this very long table. Each guy would be sitting with his attorney and accountant. At one end would be Steve Perry and Lee Phillips and at the other end would be me and Michael Krassner. It would be just me and Perry going at each other and all the other guys watching it like a tennis match -- right to left, left to right. Not one of them ever once grew vertebrae and said, “You know I can’t remember Herbie ever making a mistake on any of this stuff.” They just let it all go down. In ’84 and ’85, when they refused to tour, they made me liquidate all of their real estate investments and holdings that would have made them all so fabulously wealthy just like me [laughing]. I had other independent investments. To me they’re an embarrassment. They have played more shows with this new kid, Steve Augeri, than they did when they were originally together. How can people miss you if you don’t go away? They need to get themselves into a financial position where they do not need to tour every year but they can’t seem to break away from that.

CRR: How did your relationship with the band end?

Herbie: I continued to work it through ’93. When Bill Graham died I wanted to retire from everything and stop. Somehow Jon Cain hallucinates and says that he phoned me up and fired me [laughing]. He said that in an interview on some T.V. show but I fail to recollect that. Who was he? I was the only shareholder. As I stepped back, I issued stock to all of them in Nightmare Inc. and just walked; that’s basically it.

The interview was done in April. Here's the link to the entire interview:

Oh, I'm sure good 'ol Herbie has some interesting comments on this whole situation. Heck, the might need to do a little extra filming and add some footage to the "Behind the Music" episode. That would certainly add some spice to an already interesting show.

Cetera, I was just waiting for some asshole to get me pissed, and looky here, my favourite kind of asshole, A smelly, stinky, non deodorant wearing Euro.

Dude, I have been a fan. A very ardent supporter, and have given these lying bastards tens of thousands of dollars in 25 years. And this is what I get in return?

This isn't about speculation anylonger. It's found out. There isn't any "maybe" or "it's possible." It has been proven and the Band knows it, fans who are stupid know it, and journalists know it.

I have sources from within the band, outside the band and former band employees. You think this is a stunt? If it were, I would be in prison. There is a reason I am not, and Management knows they cannot do a damned thing.

I tried to locate Azoff Mgt email, but cannot find it. Anyone have their address, or email? I would like to have a correspondence with them today....maybe end this once and for all.
