"Suzanne Somers" Syndrome

Hey all....

Remember that show "Three's Company" - with the (in)famous character of "Chrissy Snow", excellently performed by Suzanne Somers?

Well, I was watching the "Unauthorized Movie" about 3C a few nights ago....and it dawned on me:

SS got WAY TOO POPULAR for the show; she started to "overshadow" the entire project; she claimed that people were only watching 3C "to see her".

John Ritter (RIP), Joyce Dewitt, and the Network got fed up with her antics, so they fired her....but guess what happened next:

They proceeded to hire NOT ONE - TWO(!) - actresses.....

....with Blonde hair and a "dingbat" personality.

And it didn't work.

....sound familiar?

IMO, Journey should've just broken up and started 4 side projects. If not, then they should've done Studio Work for others.

But of course , Hindsight is.....you know....

IMO, Journey should've just broken up and started 4 side projects. If not, then they should've done Studio Work for others.

I'm glad they didn't. I think "Arrival" is a great album and also the stuff on "Red 13". "Generations" wasn't quite as good but there are at least two songs on there, "Faith in the Heartland" and "Never too Late" that are as good as anything they've done for about 20 years. That being said I enjoy the music they've done with Augeri better than either "Trial By Fire" or "Raised on Radio". TBF was too ballad heavy for me and ROR sounded more like leftovers from a SP solo album and a few Journey tunes.

im glad they didnt break up for good either,,, otherwise i would still be wondering what if,,

what would a new album sound like etc.... i saw them a few years back and they were great,,

a very wonderful rockin experience,, 5th row ,, close enough to scare the band ,, other

projects,, yea ,, i saw hardline,, they were great!!! not the same,, everyone wanted to know

when journey was getting back together,, what else can they do to bring them money and play for a big fan base,,,

get journey back ,, play on the name,,, and...... although its almost a ruined name nowwwww,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

im still glad i got to see them again,, and what of those fans that never saw them in their heyday,,,

I would agree with that. Arrival is a pretty good record, but Red 13 and Generations are horrible. The band should have never relased them. It's sad to see what Journey has become, a washed up nostalga act.

Don't get me wrong, I like "Generations". I just wish they'd have left off "Gone Crazy" and "In-Self Defense". Neal's song sounds more like Van Halen with him fronting them and the Valory tune sounds like a mix of ZZ Top and Van Halen. If those two songs had been left off, I would've like it a good bit better.

The music needed to live on, they should have at the time, when Perry quit, Got Kevin Chalfant to take over, then Augeri could have replaced him 15 years later-ERIC

"Goin' Crazy" is okay, but it's out of place on "Generations". I don't like his vocals on that track, even though I am a fan of ZZ Top...That being said, I think I'm one of the few that gave Ross a good review on his rendition of "Walks Like a Lady" at the 30th anniversary show last year.

"In Self Defense" is also a good, hard rockin' track but like Ross's track, it just doesn't seem to fit.

But it does sound a bit out of place on a Journey album, but I think that is a result of being conditioned for years that Journey song have to sound a certain way.
In many ways I prefer the two part vocals of the Rolie/Perry songs, like Feeling That Way/Anytime to anything that has been done after.

I think Generations had the potential to be a good album. Plenty of time to record,etc.. but Neal was too busy with his side project and it feels like a unfinished,thrown together record. I listened to TBF the other day, Perry's vocals are ok, but the musicianship is outstanding. I think Ross's bass playing and Smitty's drums are perfect on that album.

The "Journey" could have gone on forever without anything after '96. That's why we have CD's.

The people that replaced Suzanne were cute, but nowhere near as good. Oh wait, now I see...
