The end of the Journey?

Nothing against JSS but I don't think it's a good fit. I will however give him a chance to prove me wrong. If they don't bring Steve back or hire a replacement that at least sounds like "Journey" I think this could be the end of the road for many fans myself included. No one will ever quite be what Perry once was but Augeri sounded like Journey. It was a perfect fit. Chalfant sounds like Journey, heck even Hugo would be a better choice as creepy as it would be (Perry Clone) but Soto is more of a metal guy (Yes I have listened to him sing "Send her my love") who is indeed a great talent. It's just not a good fit!! He sounds NOTHING like Journey.

I hope they prove me wrong. I thought Augeri was perfect from the start. But I think this is a HUGE MISTAKE!!!
Just my opinion.

Hi,
I'm new to the board.I can see where you're coming from, and I bet a lot of fans will be dissapointed. But in my opinion,I think that Jeff will bring some edge to the band and Deen won't have to sing as much. The man can sing, but it just looks wierd to see a drummer sing.

Who cares what it looks like. Have you heard Deen sing? Amazing.

No, it is clearly not the end of the band. I think it is time for the negativity to cease.

Journeyman8484 Welcome and glad you posted.
Can't say as I agree with you on the statement
"looks weird to see a drummer sing"
I like it when a drummer takes the lead it mixes
up the norm to what you normally see.
We all see and hear things through our own musical minds.
I enjoy reading what others feel.

Agreed Niggy whole heart-idly!
I would love for Deen Castronovo
To take shot gun in the leads.
He don't want to....that's cool man.
He has a great voice.
Pretty darn cute to....Hello Mr.Castronovo, do you get to Canada much?

I agree completely. Saying he "doesn't sound like Journey" is the perfect description. It has nothing to do with sounding like Perry...it has to do with making Journey sound like Journey. I just don't see how anybody could listen to him and think, "Yeah, that guy could sing for Journey". Doesn't make sense to me.

I know Deen can sing, but am I the only one who thinks it looks wierd to see a drummer sing?Plus, drums is the hardest instrument to sing and play at the same time,so the more you concentrate on singing, the harder it is to play drums well.

Tell that to Don Henley, Kelly Keagy and Phil Collins.

Maybe.... But does he have the right voice? Great yes but what happens when all those fans go to a show and expect it to sound like Journey and it no longer does? This could be very interesting. I can't wait to see the reviews.

Yes. Imagine when a keyboardist sings. Really weird! :D

The right voice?

JSS has a very powerful, rockin', take-charge voice - different from what current Journey fans are used to. Not better or worse, but different. If a change had to made (which it obviously did) they may have chosen one of the best replacement front-men. I can't wait for the first reviews to come in!

I am not questioning how good he is. LOL... But you said it for me. He's different, not "Journeylike" and you can count on some pissed off fans. Bring on the reviews. Believe me I hope they are great!! But I bet they are mixed at best.

He has many voices, he's not a one trick pony. Anyone that has checked him out can verify this.
JSS will rock, and do what's appropriate. Making your living as a professional singer for over
20 years gives you some firepower when called to do a gig like this.

Yes I know this is Journey we're talking about obviously. But Deen does some pretty amazing stuff behind the kit and a lot of it isn't exactly easy.

If Journey still had an audience for their new music outside their hardcore fan base, I'd be very optimistic right now...I think JSS is a great talent, and on top of that, a great songwriter. I think Journey could make one of the best albums of their career with JSS at the helm. But it's not 1981, and in 2006 no one would hear the album. Journey has been a touring oldies revue since Augeri joined. They put out two albums, but only played a few of the songs in concert (except for that one show last year where they played a majority of Generations, but that didn't last long, did it?) and neither album made an impact on the general public.

It's too late to make Journey into something new and exciting. As good as this lineup could be, I don't see them selling out arenas as Journey if the singer doesn't sound at all like Perry, because that's what people want. It doesn't matter if it's good or not, sadly. I think this may be the end, although my hope is that if Journey is off the table, perhaps Schon and JSS will do another project...Journey right now is 3/5 Soul Sirkus anyway, there's no reason this band couldn't continue under that moniker and make the music they want to make without worrying about having to play "Any Way You Want It" every night.

Andrew - respectfully - negativity and conflict between sides and differences of opinion is the life blood of a forum. You cannot have a forum without a level of both.

The kind of negativity you want to avoid is personal attacks amongst members - expressing an opinion as to whether or not Journey can survive long term after this week is a legitimate question and discussion should not be discouraged.

Just my .02

Thank you. :D Believe me I don't want the "JOURNEY" to end. I am just not convinced they are doing the right thing yet. I hope JSS proves me wrong.

Good points. People can crucify me all they want to for agreeing, but I do think there are current Augeri fans that will have trouble accepting JSS as a permanent replacement, if that's what happens, and I don't think the band is relevant enough to regain the support of the general public without hiring someone like John Mayer or Jack Johnson to front the band.

Jeremey, I know you said you didn't want to take over the spot of Augeri, and this is a big what if....BUT, What if they had came up to you and said big J, Augeri is out for the rest of this year, we wan tyou to fill in for him the remainder of the Journey, def tour. Would you have taken it. even if it was for a few short months? Like I said this is out there-ERIC

I'm just back home from VA Beach today. I was probably the biggest Soul Sirkus fan here, think Jeff is a great singer, and was always of the opinion if Neal and Jon are there, its Journey. But I must say something was missing for me Saturday night. I don't have a problem with Jeff as the choice in the interim, but I have huge doubts about it if it turns out to be permanent. I think he is a great talent but don't feel that his tone or stage presence are "Journey" if you will. I'm surprised at all the reviews that said he sounded like Perry, etc. It just wasn't Journey for me at all.
