Think about this people

If JSS vocal style is "his own" and he doesnt attempt to mimic Perry or Augeri at all.... it would make more sense for the fans of the classic Journey sound to go watch Tribute bands like Hugo's Evolution...lol as thats the only way it will be possible to hear the songs as they should be !! wild or what??

 :D

Hey man,

Everyone can say what they will about Hugo being a Perry clone and so on. The bottom line is the guy can sing and write well. In fact, he does Journey better than they do. Valentine is a pure kick ass record and Hugo's solo stuff is good too. He could easily step in and cover the old material as good as anyone. I think most folks that go to see Journey these days expect to hear the songs as they were sang 25 years ago. Hugo can do that hands down. I'm sure I'll take more crap for it but Hugo was the obvious choice for replacing Augeri IMO. Have him cut his hair or wear a gay hat or something to make him look less like Perry. Who cares, I just want to hear the songs as they were intended. Chalfant would have been a good second choice IMHO.

Aaron

If that is the case, pop in the '81 Houston DVD. THAT'S the way they were intended.

Never heard him in-person, but gauging from the available online clips, Hugo's voice has always sounded rather thin to me.
Sorry.

Eightyrock,

You're right dude, I have that dvd and a few more boots with Perry. That is the way it was intended to be sang. I guess I've come to realization that Perry will never be back and even if he did make it back, I don't think he could cover the material. I think Hugo is the closest thing we can get today that is equal to Perry's capability 25 years ago.

I heard him sing on Thursday night, in a town park bandshell - not the best of conditions.
Nothing thin about that voice.

Like I said, I've yet to hear the man live - so I could very well be full of shit.
As it currently stands, I am happy about the Jeff choice.

Larry,

Thanks for the link. He's not bad at all, I was impressed. Does he write his own stuff too or does he only do the Journey cover band deal?

Thanks,

Aaron

Hugo sounds thin, I am not convinced. Clones like Hugo bug me, because they don't bother getting good, they try too hard to copy Steve Perry, but the fact of the matter is, first get your own voice then maybe mimic somebody elses maybe?. And too much falsetto with Hugo. I know im harsh, but thats the truth man.

When your listening to Jeremey's voice, just his voice - you can hear that this guy has put alot of effort into getting where he is today.

Jeremy does sound good, really good. Its hard to say if he's better than Hugo or not vocally but he is definitely good. My question is, can he write? Hugo's written and recorded:

Valentine - fuckin awesome AOR record
Open Skyz - too soft but good
Hugo S/T - The Journey album Journey wished TBF was, God TBF SUCKED!
Hugo - Time on Earth - A bit soft but good, more Perry solo like
Hugo - Fire in the Night - Excellent rock record

My point, Hugo can sing and is a known talent writing good music. He could add a lot to the writing department and he knows how to rock as well.

Andrew had mentioned in a post a while back that the Hugo S/T record is an excellent AOR record. I still like Valentine better, it just kicks ass! :D

If you haven't heard Valentine or Hugo's S/T records, do your self a favor and try them.

L8r,

Aaron

I must admit I am a big Hugo fan but I don't have him pegged as a Steve Perry clone. Their is a similarity in the vocals and indeed the look  !

However, I find Hugo's vocals can vary from album to album (in a good way). He was practically unrecognisable to me on the Open Skyz record and had a Joe Elliott feel to his voice, albiet in tune! Listening to the Street Talk release Destination I couldn't figure out which songs he had performed on without reading the sleeve notes as he was singing more soulfully and without the 'Perryisms'.

On the three Hugo releases there is definately more of a classic Journey sound to his voice although perhaps less so on the recent Fire in the Night where his higher range singing is evident. I recently played a friend some of Hugo's S/T debut and she said he sounded like Brian 'Flaming' Adams!!!
I guess what I am trying to say is that although there is a timbre to Hugo's voice that allows him to mimic Steve Perry, he is much more versitle a performer than given credit for. Obviously comparisons will be made given that Hugo fronts Evolution and I can only hope that he one day decides to perform his own material at shows.

In closing, if Hugo did ever decide to perform a show of his own material I would actually be more inclined to travel to watch it than I would be to see a Journey show and I love Journey, it really is that damn good!

Finalflight,

I'm with you completely. If Hugo does a show of his own stuff, I'm heading that way. Even if it is a 15 hour drive.

Aaron
