It's a shame what it's come to...

I'm listening to a boot from Osaka in 1998 and Augeri's voice sounds GREAT.

It bothers me to see what it's all come down to. His voice is now shot (hopefully not permanently) and for what? All these tours didn't help record sales one bit I'm sure, and how could they, they BARELY played any new songs.

I hope the money was worth it. :(

Yeah, those early boots prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Augeri was the right choice.

And his legacy lives on..
Front page report says they opened last show with JSS covering Faith In The Heartland......good for them.

Legacy???? His legacy is singing to tape and dragging Journey's rep to a new low. They are gonna have to fight like hell to clear themselves of this mess. His type of voice would never last trying to sing over Schon's guitar volume.

Hm. The "guitar volume" whine has betrayed you.

Perry won't be back.

His legacy is enabling Journey to continue when Perry couldn't. The man deserves a ton of respect.

Yes, agreed.

And... his "legacy" of "singing to tape" is really not that widespread. A handful of fanatics on the Internet and maybe the people who remember it from Mark & Brian. If they bring Augeri back, I really don't think they'll lose much in ticket sales.

But do you believe that Cain & Schon wouldn't have hired someone else if they didn't go with him? They were hell bent on forging ahead, just like now. The writing chemistry just wasn't there with him or Cain would have never agreed to let Schon do Red13. Cain would have been sitting at a piano with Augeri writing their asses off. That didn't happen, even with Generations.

Are you joking? The press was BRUTAL! A few more reviews like that at each city and they would be marked as a big joke forever. Would you want that to happen? They had no choice but to go this route.

I agree....The last few weeks are hardly his "legacy". He will be remembered for allowing/enabling Journey to continue, some great vocals on Arrival/Generations and a reputation as an affable, approachable, human being.

But a few negative reviews does not make a 'legacy'. Get over yourself....

Only a few articles were ever cited here. Mostly internet stuff no one cares about. Mark & Brian is about as big as it got.

The ONLY respect I have for Neal is the way he plays his guitar so incredibly, that is it!

As for the lip synching & using tapes, Neal, Jon, & Augeri (all of them) don't get my respect, They all most ruined the legacy of Journey, & if Deano had not have figured out what was going on & forced them to do it right the way, they probaly would have kept on doing it with no guilt or shame for decieving the fans that way.

I personally don't like the way he went out because I think he deserved better and see him as no more guilty of shamming the audience than the rest of the band who was a prt of it as well but just like I gave him a listen I will do the same with his replacement and if I like what I hear will be a fan. I do really like the song Faith in the Heartland so I'm glad they are doing it. I do see more potential with this line up for future material that's gonna be more of a rock format than soft rock if they were able to continue with Steve A.

No, they probably did the right thing pulling him out for NOW, but if they bring him BACK after he heals/gets surgery they will still hardly suffer in sales.

And I would like every single one of you who keeps going on and on about Journey's "legacy" please tell me what that is.

Being critically panned at every turn throughout their history?
Going from stadiums to casinos like EVERY OTHER BAND IN THE GENRE?
Being turned from prog-rock to super 80s pop?
Cancelling tours TWICE? (86 and 96)
Playing music because it's really too late for them to start other careers?
Existing as a punch line in today's pop culture? (I Love The 80s, Conan O'Brien, The OC)

Please do tell why they are so deserving of the pedestal you set them upon.

Very true. Just take a look at Foreigner and Styx. 2 of Journey's main contemporaries. None of these acts will ever have a major hit again. Even Def Leppards record sales aren't very good anymore if you compare it to what it once was. Boston is also in the same boat.

All of these bands are nostalgia acts to some degree. Journey a little bit less because they have been actively putting out new music. They are probably in a better position than most of the bands a mentioned overall (though not by much).

Multiple platinum albums.

Hit songs that are still on the radio, TV, and in movies and still bring people to the concerts even though the original singer isn't with them.

Soaring vocals from one of the best known rock frontmen of all time.

Beautiful melodic rock music.

Coming back after ten years with all the magic still there on a fabulous album, shipping platinum and getting a Grammy nomination.

Journey's Legacy will always be 4 words:

Steve Perry Neal Schonn.

I hope and believe they have started a chapter that will erase the embarassment that were the "Augeri Years". Yes, I said embarasment. Sorry, but the albums they put out didn't do squat.

Before you tell me that music is different today, tell me why we still hear Don't Stop Believin, Wheel In The Sky, Any Way You Want It, Open Arms, Faithfully, Stone In Love, etc... on the radio. I am not talking oldies stations, either. The mainstream stations in East Tennessee play these songs, and not just in an "80's lunch hour".

Also, ask the average person on the street about Journey. "Steve Perry" is what you will get. Ask the same people about Steve Augeri. All you will get is a blank stare and "Who is he???".

I am excited about Journey with Soto. I expect great things out of this lineup. I hope I am not wrong.

Like what one of the newspaper articles said, the "forgettable" Steve Augeri. A blip on the radar screen. Big to a select crowd of Journey fans who have hung in there and watch every move of the band, BUT that is a small # of the fans over the country and over the years who know Journey. But I do not think this is a shock or a negative thing to the band. I believe this is exactly what they wanted. A singer who could cover the tunes but NEVER become a big name. So when he became ill, a quick change over in mid course. Back in the day, shows would have been cancelled. Not now...just slide in the next guy and keep on running!

I hope JSS will make a big impact on this tour! I am READY!!

Steve Augeri's vocals on the Arrival album and performance on the the 2001 DVD was what got me into Journey in the first place. Despite being underwhelmed by both Red 13 and Generations I will be forever grateful to Mr Augeri's contribution to Journey.

When he was good he was very, very good.

I do not think it's fair to assume that the band was crap with Augeri because people still associate SP with Journey. For one, they're just not in their heyday anymore and therefore no one cares. They also never did much to promote or get promoted for the Augeri music.

And again I repeat... they're really no different than almost any band in their genre today. People still associate Styx with DDY and people still associate Foreigner with Lou Gramm like Arrivalrules said. Those bands had platinum albums, are still heard on the radio, TV, etc. It doesn't mean they suck now, they're just old. Like Journey.

East Tennessee must be behind the times to the tune of 1986. Put on anything other than a classic rock/oldies station in the Washington, DC/Baltimore area and you will NOT hear any Journey on the radio.

That's a fact. Try listening to them online if you don't believe me. Report back when you hear anything. MAYBE, during the oldies electric lunch or something if you are really lucky. DC 101 and 98 Rock are the biggest stations in this area.
