Just curious...Name a song or songs that you love by an artist AND style that you normally don't care for.

- "Dance With My Father" by Luther Vandross. I have a collection of well over 2000 MP3s on my Favorites list and this one just came on a few minutes ago. Vandross was a great singer, no question about that but I don't care for his music or that style of music. However, the message in this song is just so strong. I love it!

- "The Dance" by Garth Brooks. I typically can't stand country music at all but this is a great tune.

- "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye. Similar to Vandross in that I don't usually care for his style or music. A classic tune.

- "Alive" by Pearl Jam. Never cared much for grunge and especially can't stand Vedder's singing. I remember reading a review in one of my guitar mags where they had Yngwie Malmsteen review random tunes they would play for him. He said the singer sounded like he was sitting on the toilet pushing out a big one.

- "Live to Tell" by Madonna. I absolutely LOATHE Madonna and probably all of her songs except this one.

I think it is called "Whiskey in the Jar" by Metallica.

I can't stand Metal, but I really dig this tune.

That's a cover of a Thin Lizzy tune. The Metallica version is okay but I never really liked the original anyway.

"Night Fever" ..Bee Gees...guess its something that brings up memories of easier times when you were young, carefree and foolish...Well at least I was at that time :lol:

Hmmm... I'm not much into this style, I don't even know what you call it. But I like "Dare" by Gorillaz.

Good tune. Bee Gees are underrated. "Tragedy" is a cool song.

I think Madonna's Ray Of Light album is brilliant, but not really because of anything she did. William Orbit wrote or co-wrote all the songs and did all of the production and actual music-making on it, and he's an amazing musician. I like some of his own stuff but that's one of the few times he's been forced to shape his music into a more song-oriented context, and I think it's genius. If only it had a good singer on it.

Not much into jazz, but I love the song Take Five

Absolutely amazing. I love each of the songs that you dislike except for Garth. I can do without Garth.

Great topic.

I normally can't stand hip hop, a terrible genre with core values which escape me completely.

But I like quite a few songs off The Score by The Fugees, notably Ready or Not and Killing Me Softly.

Also not a country fanatic to say the least but I love Joleen by Dolly Parton.

I never got into his "classic," really famous stuff, but I've loved all of Johnny Cash's American Recordings albums...dark, haunting, amazing stuff, without any twang in sight. The new one is just as good as the ones he released during his life.

Not a huge country music fan, though I like certyain artists and cartain songs that are classified as country.

I agree that What's going on, or any Marvin Gaye song is pretty much great, I love Motown stuff bigtime, as much as Rock.

I also agree that "Dance with my Father" is a great song, and the message is just beyond words. I even like the video. Perhaps Luther's best song ever, and quite a song to "go out on". RIP Luther & Marvin.

I can also get into some of the stuff from Dream Theater and the harder bands out there, but not as much anymore.

Once a Rock fan, always a Rock fan.

I'm a melodic metal-head at heart, anything from Journey and Night Ranger to Accept and Dio, but I must admit I like the pop=sounds of the Little River Band (all lineups) and Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks/Lindsey Buckingham.

I love DT, especially "Images and Words". Don't care much for "Octavarium", though. I think I only listened to it once and, luckily, I only paid about a buck to download the whole thing at one of the MP3 sites I frequent.

For me, Images and Words is their best, if not most commercial.

I enjoyed a meet & greet/sponser promo with John Petrucci & Derek Sherinian back after that CD came out, and they played lots of stuff along to dat tapes. I have to say, that night was almost better than seeing the whole band live, before they stopped playing anything older than 2000, for a while. They lost me with the concept album of the girl being murdered, especially when they played the WHOLE CD in concert.

That's "Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory". It's not one of my favorites but I enjoy it pretty well. I have the DVD of the live show from that tour that was recorded live in New York City. Here's the freaky part. The DVD was released on 9/11/2001 and part of the artwork on the album cover depicted the New York City skyline, with the twin towers, silhouetted in the background. They pulled it off the shelves the next day and re-released it with new cover art. I did manage to purchase a copy with the original artwork, though. :shock:

That's right, I don't have that CD, so I forgot the name. It was just too, I don't know. just not my thing. I was wearing my Hard Rock New York City shirt with the twin towers the morning of 9/11, and it was too freaky, I just retired the shirt, now it hangs in the closet.

Prince, is another I can listen to a lot of, but not everything. Purple Rain is a Classic CD/Album for sure, but he has a few other shining moments as well.

Also Carole King, the QUEEN of great songwriters.

Beautiful from Christina Agulera(sp?). HATE her stuff!!! but I do like this one.

Madonna's Like a Prayer and Borderline. otherwise, cringe at her songs...

Gorillaz' "Clint Eastwood." Haven't heard a LOT of their other stuff. but what I have, not a fan

50 cent's It's Your Birthday. Again, HATE isn't even strong enough for his other stuff for me..

I'm sure there are more, and I probably wouldn't admit to these in the light of day, lol

My musical taste is so eclectic that it would take to long to list the songs. The only kind of music that I've never found anything to like about is Rap :twisted:

. I normally don't like bluegrass at all either, even though my husband plays it, but I like some of Allison Kraus and Union Station.

I was pleasantly surprised by Andrea Bocelli.
I really like some Allison Krauss, but not her bluegrass stuff. I just love her voice though.
My wife listens to country so I get my fill there. I listen to almost everything so I am used to picking songs I like over genres I like.
I happen to like Fighter by Christina Aguilera.
Couldn't get away from the Black-Eyed peas and that seemed to be OK for a while.

I love Alison Krauss, and her band is amazing. But why in gods name does she let the guys in her band sing? She has a beautiful voice but the rest of her band sounds like the most generic bluegrass singers on the planet, which is really grating...they can all play their asses off though, i just wish they'd let her sing more.
