"Vocal Genius"....?

PostPosted: Tue Jul 18, 2006 1:19 pm

Just been perusing thru some of the threads of JSS and SA....basically saying that "they can sort-of-hit-it", etc....it's almost 11:30PM right now, and my eyes are glazing over....but food for thought for tonight:

SP knew what he COULD do...and what he COULD NOT do - and wrote songs to accomodate his voice in that manner.

1 voice in a million....IMO.

Just listen to what's been served up in the FOURTEEN PAGES(!!) of the "Request" thread.

Crazy like a fox, methinks....

There are two or three others that can stand there with Perry. Freddy Mercury is also one in a million.

Good point. Hell, DDY even passed SP, because of longevity.

SP basically ensured HIS legacy, by writing, and singing songs no one else could do.

As good as JSS is, this just verifies how great Perry was. Augeri was never in the same atmosphere, let alone the same stage. That's laughable. JSS is awesome, but perhaps in a different genre?

I'm for giving JSS a chance, but there's a reason even his peers in the biz called him "the voice" too. Not just the fans. No one could and no one ever will be able to, no matter what. Love him or hate him, Perry's a smart cookie. Probably chocolate chip.

I have a feeling that your new "shoe" deals with Perry. If it's about to drop at least give us a hint as to what you're referring to. YOU' RE KILLING ME.

PS Glad to see you're alive. I know a lot of people SOMEWHERE ELSE were hoping for your demise. Keep up the TRUTHFUL work. Just do it a little less dramatic this time. :D

No, all the JSS boots prove is what a great pick Augeri was, since there will never again be a Perry. Augeri kicked ass from '98-04.

But NIG, I think the point here is that he didn't kick Perry's and nobody ever will singing Perry's own songs or imitating his style.

Amen to that, NIG! I have even more respect for Augeri now, and you guys all know what a big supporter I was already. Hearing JSS struggle this much only a few dates into the tour should show just how difficult singing those songs truly is, and what an amazing job Augeri did for that many years. Also shows what a talent Perry was in his prime, that even the best of vocalists have trouble doing what he made to look effortless.

THANK YOU, Deano!

That's exactly what I was trying to say! Like I said, I was getting really tired when I wrote that last nite.

Yes, we all know Perry was one of, if not the, best ever. Augeri did a hell of a job helping the band continue. That is why several of us here get pissed when people totally discount that.

Yes he is, great show in Nashville, great stage presence, fantastic singer, but not quite the Journey sound. Gained respect for him at the show-ERIC

I agree. We can't forget him. He is very talented. TALL STORIES, which I recently got, is phenomenal. I actually think he sings better on that than he did on the JOURNEY cds. Lots of fire and energy, and passion. All the people complaining can't take away what he has accomplished with the band.

Steve Perry is the best singer I've ever heard IMO, and I ain't no spring chicken  ( Uh did I have to admit that? ) and he's been very smart too, in protecting his legacy. Ya gotta also hand it to him for not trash talking, I've only heard him give them props and sing a song to them ( at least at one point ). I'm sure his voice is lower now, but that would still be a good sound to me. Also love his inflections.

Tall Stories is great through and through. Not a single bad track. I kept waiting for that Tall Stories influence to modify the band and it never did. When did that talent every manifest itself in Journey. Most of Auger's writing contributions were sub-standard. Only "Beyond the Clouds" contains some of that Tall Stories magic.

I think Augeri was trying to wirye what Journey should sound like instead of just writing-ERIC

Generations saw Steve lean a little more toward his Tall Stories vocals, but (like TNC) I kept waiting for more of THAT voice than the Perryish one.

Interesting. I thought his TALL STORIES were a hell of a lot more Perry-like tha his JOURNEY output. He sings with some reall passion on it, and you can really tell he's pushing himself on it. Like the first track, for example. He sings his ass off on that, and an several other tracks. Maybe it was because he was younger when he did it, I'm not sure. The only complaint I have about TALL STORIES is that it could stand to have stronger guitars on it... and the guy needed to cut loose a lot more than he does on it. Maybe he didnt have the soloing chops? The rhythm guitars on that album remind me a lot of another album I have by a band called ROMEO's DAUGHTER... their first release. The one MUTT LANGE produced. Not much soloing on that one, either.

Maybe it was the pressure of trying to sound like Journey and Perry that messed it up. Augeri is a sound a like not a clone. I think he tried to clone his self into Perry, which hurt the material a little and really hurt his voice.-ERIC

I think he was more Perry-esque on TS than on the JOURNEY stuff. One interesting thing I noticed is that Augeri has some of that Perry "breathy" stuff on the TS cd... you know where you can hear him breathing, or taking a breath between some of the vocal lines. That breathy stuff is all over Perry's FTLOSM release, and is one reason I'm not crazy about it. I think Perry did it a little too much on FTLOSM, because it 's distracting, and takes me out of the track. Maybe the chicks dig hearing every little breath he has, but I would have edited out all of that in Pro Tools. Or maybe he took Sting a little too seriously!
