I've occasionally wondered why (historically) Eric Martin's name never came up in disucssions as a replacement singer during any of the comings and goings (though he was up for the TOTO Job at one time longggg ago).
He used to be managed by HH and he worked with Neal on the Teachers soundtrack.
Any thoughts ?
Cheers

I love his singing but I think the roughness to his voice wouldn't sit well with certain JRNY fans...

He's more 'bluesy' and less 'soulful'....
Though that isn't to say he hasn't got SOUL! He's got tons...

He is also a great frontman.

I think Martin would've been awesome in Toto...I never understood why he didn't get the gig.
But Journey is out of his range, I think. Maybe in the early 90's he might've been able to do a few of those songs, but I doubt he sounds like that 15 years later. (I'm sure he still sounds great, but everyone loses a bit of their high range as they get older)
I've always wanted to go see his solo shows, but they're always way out west somewhere...oh well. :\

Wasn´t it Billy Sheehan who said EM was a lousy frontman?!

Thats the problem finding a singer who has the range, evan when Augeri joined he was 37ish and for singers your voice is going through changes at this age.

Eric Martin is brill, just listen to TMG and his voice has still a lovely power to it with that rough blusey-ness to it.
But then every band has particular songs that don't fit evert singer. Look at Steve's voice with Tyketto???
Forever Young didn't suit his voice at all. But yet with Journey he fits great.

To be with you was massive, Eric's voice is lovely.
I was suprised when I saw Amazing Journey (Who tribute) in NY on holiday, Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan (guitars and bass) were in the band and hardly anone knew what band had made them big either. I was even answering questons as to who Gary Cherone fronted for and what he was famous for too. He was the vocals for the night and he was fab too. (Mike Portnoy was drums (Dream Theatre))

Also, Eric opened for Journey way back when, and Neal and/or Jonathan have writing credits on either an early solo album, or an early Mr. Big album - or both. It wouldn't have suprised me at all if Eric Martin's name came up in the late 80's, prior to Chalfant, if they were considering moving on without Perry.
