A human approach

Postby jrnysc » Sat Jul 22, 2006 12:18 am

Morning all. I have been on this board for a while now, got to see the band this past Saturday (wonderful show), and have read post after post about the Journey situation. I have read the put downs, allegations, etc. Just wanted to have some conversation and possibly give some suggestions to help folks look at this from perhaps a different perspective. I will start with Journey as a whole. This is a legendary band who has played for over 30 years. They have enjoyed more success than most of us could ever even aspire for. They have brought so much joy to the fans who have followed them over the years. They, even at their age, come out and leave their families summer after summer to bring us the music they love. Living on the road all summer every year has to get tiring at some point. But they do it anyway. They have a HUGE tour going with Def Leppard right now. Noone can deny that. They are selling tickets like hotcakes. Then, suddenly, Steve is not getting over his vocal ailments. I do not know the contract with DL, and it's none of my business. I am professional enough however to know that it could have cost them dearly to cancel. So, what the hell do you do? IMO they did what any smart band would do. They have the advantage of two things. For one, you have a drummer who can sing the material as good as anyone. And two, you have a dear friend like JSS who was available enough and willing to come in and keep the buses rolling. Did they do things the right way? I don't know. I can tell you I would have tried to find a way through also. Sometimes in life we have to make tough decisions, in tough circumstances. They made their decision. Sometimes folks won't like your decisions either, but that makes them neither right nor wrong. I have made it abundantly clear the vocal tape issue was intriguing to say the least. GO DOWN FOR PART 2.

I'd love to read your post but it needs to be broken up into paragraphs. Too much information in one long paragraph makes it kinda hard to read.

it's a tough read...but you have interesting points in your statement. sorry, i can't agree about
SA. the truth would not have hurt. just admit you can't sing and walk away. otherwise it appears to be a personal insult to your listeners who come and pay money to hear you sing.
do not perpetuate a farce by standing on stage and pretending to sing. i lose respect for you.

the other info in your post...gets kind of lost because there is so much info. but nice try putting it into words.

Great post. I did manage to read it, but yeah, paragraphs, dude.

The best way, and IMO, the only professional way, would have been to take care of the "issue" the minute after last tours last show. They knew what they were doing, but they had to know they would get caught sooner or later.

Anyway, they had about 3 months before entering into a contract with DL. They should never have entered into it in the first place if they were sincere in wanting to keep SA. I for one think they needed a way to get rid of him, and well, although this was not the way, it worked out. He had to go, but they could have, and should have given the guy a graceful exit.

If you were going on a tour bus through Hell, wouldn't you want sprinklers in the bus? They rode through fire and got burned. They best way to NOT get burned is not go through the fire.

Nice post.

A Human Approach Part 2

Postby jrnysc » Sat Jul 22, 2006 12:47 am

Now, to Mr. Augeri. My heart hurts for this man. No bones about it. Number one, your given the opportunity years ago to get back into music, and for non other than Journey!! Plus being hired by the likes of Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain. You have tours since 98 doing a superb job IMO of fronting this band, taking fans hearts nationwide. You are truly greatful of the opportunities you have, and are one of the most sincere, kind people any fan could ask for. You have helped bring Journey back to life. Then, you start having vocals problems, and the buzzards start circling the shit wagon. They are waiting for you to fall, so they can start the feast. All that you have given Journey is forgotten in an instant. Many don't give a damn if you live or die any more, how you feel, the embarrassment you must have felt during those last shows, the depression and hurt you must feel about letting your bandmates, fans, and family down. It is truly inhumane how this world has become. Then in comes Jeff Scott Soto, kind and willing enough to drop everything he is doing, and keep Journey on the road. Everyone has an opinion as to whether or not they like the idea, but most are willing to acknowledge it is none of our business, and certainly not our decision. Then, Jeff comes out rockin, has some rough notes a couple of nights, and suddenly some start saying screw him too. I don't understand these type comments from people when most of us would piss our pants just walking on that stage seeing that many people, much less trying to sing one line of a Journey song. But we can judge them? I hope you folks will read this the way it is intended, and all of us look in the mirror and realize how much you can hurt people with some of your comments. I realize it is easy to hurt someone on the internet, when you don't have to face them, but it still hurts when they are directed at you. I also wonder if these people would make these same exact comments to these peoples face? Just food for thought folks. Any discussion will/would be welcome. Thanks. Had to vent a little. Have a great day. :)

Where was the human element PRIOR to booking this tour? Augeri did not just "start" to have vocal problems this tour. Anyone having the problems he had LAST tour, should not have signed up for a tour, let alone one of THIS size this year.

Where was the human element of concern for us, the people laying down their hard-earned money for tickets LAST year and then again this year, knowing what they ALL knew, and deceiving everyone anyway.

Where was the human element in having ANY communication with the fans, even on their own website?

They made their decisions based on money, not on yours (or anyones) perceived loyalty to the fans, the music or their legacy. They are more than damn lucky that Soto was available, ready and willing or they would have been screwed with a capital S. If there is any human element in any of this, it is Soto. At least he is LIVE and was willing to step up and save their asses.
