1st time you heard Journey

Postby Blueskies » Mon Jul 24, 2006 3:35 am

I'm really going to date myself with this. The 1st time I heard Journey I was in a record store (Peaches, I think, and Herbie made a smart move there to get the band heard at point of purchase) Feeling That Way came on. It caught my attention when Rolie got started but when Perry came in OMG, I was floored. Had never heard anyone sound like that before. He had the most unique voice with soulful sound and inflections. I will never forget it and have never heard anyone since that got to me that way, right from the start.

as far as stores playng music, it could very well be that I heard them a lot in our local "peaches" store as well, but I know I heard them on the radio a lot too, so it's hard to remember. I loved the days when they's actually go on promo tours and come to the local record shops after doing live numbers on the radio in the morning times.

I was maybe 7 when I realized there was other music out there besides country/western and gospel. I can thank my Dad for that; he brought home my first rock album (Cat Scratch Fever, yeah I got started with the Nuge). My uncle was into KISS and Cheap Trick and it went from there...

Anyway, I heard Journey for the first time on the radio en route to California. The song was "Any Way You Want It."
"Turn it up, Dad!" every time it came on after that. My dad supported my love of Journey, bringing me tour t-shirts and some years later letting me go to my first "unsupervised" concert (ROR, Fresno '86). I was on a high for weeks after!

I remember seeing them on a kid's show, and some kid was interviewing them. They played AWYWI. I liked it a lot, but ESC4P3 came out shortly after, and then I was hooked.

Pre-Perry days. Can't remember exactly when, but I remember them on a radio station in a larger city close to me and thinking God, these guys are unbelievable. They usually played the newer/heavier stuff late in the evening on that station. Neal's solos were off the charts and Gregg's voice with that Hammond was so appropriate for that era. Nice memory of some of the best music happening at the time. I remember being particularly stoked that Aynsley friggin' Dunbar was on the drums! So, yeah, I'm a loooong time Journey fan.

After thinking about it more, I distinctly remember a trip now to Virginia Beach where I was wearing my headphones/walkman, and listening to some crap, and on the radio came Journey. We were at teh beach and everyone was out of the car but me, I jsut sat and listened until the song was over. Maybe i was too stunned to realize I had a walkman, and could take it our of the car with me.

It was 1977,I was 13 years old and as always borrowed my brothers albums with Rush,
Pink Floyd, Genesis, Led Zeppelin etc but when I heard the guitar intro of Hustler from Next - I knew right away this band was what I was looking for.
My love for the band has only grown bigger for each album....well up to TBF that is.
Journey is not just a band,it´s a way of life!

Same with me, it was 1977. Aaaaah, memories.
We were experiencing New Wave over here in the UK, and this type of band weren't really popular with many of my age group at that time. I was 16. But I have always been a sucker for melodies and good singing voices.
If it's a good voice and a tune that sticks in my head, I'm interested. And I liked what I heard.

Me and a few guys at school were in a band and were into all kinds of music. But when Escape came out, that was it! Journey have been my favourite American Band ever since. (My favourite Brit band being Queen).

The Journey sound reached me really deep.
It was just a perfect mix. Voice, guitar, keyboards and drums. They were the ingredients that go together to make a wonderful cake. Marvellous. An experience to be relished.

Their music is classic, and has never dated. I still play it in my home, in my car - most days. Almost 30 years later. That's proof of just how good it is IMO.

Nothin' better than driving on a hot Summer's day with the wind blowing in your hair and some classic Journey songs belting out of the car stereo.

Think I'll go for a drive. :D

The first time I remember hearing them was hearing "Separate Ways" on the car stereo. I think we were going to go roller skating or something like that. I was only 12 at the time and don't remember being awed by the tune or anything like that.

Separate Ways, now that always makes me smile.
Being in the UK, we never saw much footage of the Band at the time. Still don't.
(They didn't play live here much, either Grrrrr)
And I had never seen the video for that song until the DVD's came out recently.

Is the band's performance on that (unintentionally) hilarious or what????

Maybe its just me.
But when they play their 'air' instruments, especially Jonathan Cain and his 'stuck-on-the-wall' keyboard - it cracks me up.
And even when I hear the intro to the song, I start to chuckle.
God Bless them!

It's not just you. That video, because of it's corny nature gets a lot of attention because of it, like any press is good press. I really think that it was made that way for that purpose. The guys no doubt like having it be near the top of the "most anything" list, imo.

Glad to hear it's not just me. :D

It never fails to make me laugh.
When I hear the intro playing, I immediately visualize that video and start to laugh. I never saw it at the time of it's release, it wasn't until the Greatest Hits DVD came out that I discovered this classic video and the laughter began.

My favourite corny bits are (as I posted earlier) Jon's keyboard-on-the-wall, and when Steve Perry grasps his forearm and sings, "chains that bind you" - OMG they both look SO serious, and it's just too, too funny.

I really like the Greatest Hits DVD, though, because for a Brit fan who never got chance to see the Perry line-up live, it's really great, like a scrapbook of an evolving band.

I love the Journey sound, I really do.

I guess it was 1980 (??)...heard Departure/Good Morning Girl at a school dance. I've been a fan ever since.

I remember doodling their names with magic marker inside my school locker and on my notebook.

was infinity tape in my brothers car stereo...back early 1978.. started with lights...and by the time feeling that way/anytime was over I was hooked.. and by the time wheel and opened the door, winds of march were done--it was music heaven... I probably wore out that tape----and when evolution came out... we always played that LP while playing pool at a friends house...departure was so good as well.. with precious time bing my favorite song from that era...

Morons!! Please read
Ive been here some time now...decided to sign up...this forum is riddled with repulsive, small minded, and small-dicked, (evidently), little toss-pots

I dont know who the moderators are here.. but they should be shot..... the language used here is excessive...and the abuse seems very personal

What Monker says is correct

There seems to be about half a dozen people here who are ignoring Andrew's requests...and plainly just not interested in keeping this forum "clean and informed" they quite clearly are just "taking the piss" out of Andrew..and have no respect for his wishes at all .....

It all makes for pretty pathetic reading, from an "outsiders" point of view.. I think a few have lost the plot here.... the place needs to be "cleansed" of the detritus, .. (I think the word "morons, was used..how apt..as the standard of post here is pretty moronic) and needs to be rebuilt

Adios to some of you I think, when normality returns
