A serious thread,

Rememberthe lyrics, "A singer in a smokey room?"

I wonder if second hand smoke "Killed Steve Perry's voice?"

Seriously.

Well being as Steve lost the huge vocal highs he once
knew way back like 20 years ago I would say
age wasn't the hugest factor as others still have the same notes they did twenty years ago.
Smoke may have been a factor but I am unsure it was.
They played in mostly huge arenas or outdoor gigs.
I would say drugs had a factor in the lowering of his vocal
abilities and definitely strain from the relentless tours.

Who said his voice is dead. It's just hibernating..like a bear. We'll be hearing a roar or two soon enough.

I also have all the faith in the world that his voice is more wonderful than ever, in a lower, more soulful key.

I still say it's singing incorrectly that thrashes voices. Not smoke or overtouring or etc.
He could have nodes from crappy monitor mixes, screaming to hear himself for example.

If you're touring alot and not taking care of yourself, that's another thing....

If age is the factor of losing your range, explain Bobby Kimball & Jon Anderson to me. :?

I heard him state year's ago that a vocalist can't smoke, and that he did not like cigarette smoke. He also talked about how he had to watch what he ate, drank, had to keep in shape. When he would not talk to the guy's all day to save his voice, it caused ill will. I think when he quit, he quit and along with his physical problems, let himself go. This was noticeable at the World Series, but after that it seems like he's been trying to get back in shape.

Could be, but my guess is it was only temporary from the dusty loaves that rained down from the sky when his vocals reached the heavens.

It was definitely the drugs...guitar cases full of it, in their warehouse in Oakland. The "blow" literally blew up the nose, past the chords and into the brain. Sad. Very sad. You get what you play for though.

Oh yeah, but Perry's gonna "roar" anytime now. Perry Onlies have been saying that for HOW many years now? Oh WAIT, I forgot!! He's in the STUDIO now! Of course!

I don't think so.That could have hapenned to singers who did their jobs in clubs, pubs, well,in places where the audience was allowed to smoke.
As for Steve,I am sure he was very careful with the quality of the air around him.I remember Kevin Shirley saying that Steve was very strict about people who were working with him,for example. He didn't like anyone smoking near him.
Also,I am convinced that SP avoided all the smoky places.

Here's Shirley's quote about SP:"... he was a clean guy -- doesn't drink, do drugs, smoke. Doesn't like anyone around him to do it either, and he takes that to silly degrees. He checks up on people in his own ways. He's different." (http://www.journeydigest.com/Interviews/KS/)
