Journey its own worst enemy

When Augerri came in to the band, I was in shock. I was ready for Perry to tour since they bothered to make a new CD which even had a hit on the radio. But Augerri sang the hits decent, and was a humble classy guy, so I gave him a chance. Then I got Tall Stories, and thought it was a pretty decent disc, and had the kind of energy I thought Journey could use. I got excited about Jourey again. Then Journey records Arrival version one which was way too heavy on ballads before they went back in and changed up the American release. Arrival is not a half bad CD, but it lacks a lot. I think Neal et al, didn't let Augerri just be who he was, then he just basically gave up by the time Generations came out, which was lame. Only good songs there are sung by Dean, and KTYLM by Augerri.

Enter JSS. Here is a guy I had noticed much before he got together with Neal for SS which kicked ass. Then I listened to some of JSS's other stuff and was suprised to find out how melodic his stuff his, having a great energy that I think Journey needs. So Jeff is touring with Journey...mixed feelings. I wanted Augerri to do well, but it seems the band kept marginalizing him. What would Jeff be like in Journey? If the band lets him be Jeff and doesn't dictate what a Journey singer has to do (like Augerri) then could be some good fress melodic rock. If they don't, then it won't be much better than before, just a different voice.

Seems like Neal gets up tight every once in a while and yells about how he's sick of ballads and wants to rock, and instead of making a kick ass recording with the intensity of Escape or Frontiers, he creates a kick ass recording for SS which he then folds because I guess it wouldnt pay the bills, and produces a mediocre Journey record, which does rock more, but not up to par for Journey IMHO.

Since Journey has some crazy idea in its collective brain that they really are the commercial rock they were accused of being for so long, they forget that the were a hell of a lot of great rock tunes the radio didnt touch, but fans ate up. Good to see they figured that out by playing those songs with DL, but I have a feeling its only because they think they have to becasue of DL's sound, and not because they got the message yet that we loved those songs.

If JSS stays, or if Augerri comes back, I hope they quit trying to be something and just be their best.

Welcome to the board. Fair enough post. I like Perry, Augeri, and Jeff. (I like Jeff's other projects and am reserving judgement with Journey - just my own opinion)

Hope you have thick skin - this ain't Back Talk (Thank God!)

They need management. They have no direction. When it comes time to make big decisions, they screw up every time. Herbie Herbert and Steve Perry may have been hard to work with, difficult pricks at times, but they sure seemed to know what was best for the band. At least almost always.

Dude, get your shit straight...It's Augeri, not Augerii.

I mean, I love Neil, John, Ros, Geoff and Dean, but spell their names right for fucks sake.

Sure, some management wouldn't hurt, but who? Seems like the whole planet has been brainwashed into believing Journey is bubble gum rock and ballads. Hell, even the band believes it! But I agree with you, they sure need somebody driving. I like it best when Neal just plays his ass off, I don't think he is management material, nor does he need to be. If Herbert and Perry were dicks to work with, and I don't doubt it a second, the quality of the music and the size of the pay checks and mega tours should have been enough to put up with it. Sometimes work is just well...WORK!!! :P

Excellent point.

I don't know why Neal and Friga retain Grandpa's services? Hell, I can do what he does for them, for 10% the cost. How the Hell hard is it to say, "Hello, Red Rocks, I would like to know if July 31st is available? I have a band and would like to contract out your venue. Oh good, Fax over the contract. Thanks."

Trust me, I can more out of this band than Gramps is.

Granted, it is kind of hard to book the band on TV shows and Good Morning America when your singer couldn't sing live. However, that isn't a problem anylonger.

It makes me sick that Def Lippard is getting all this run, all this media, and Journey, a band that has sold 20 million more albums, plays on two pieces of Lowe's plywood, duct taped together for 80 mins. This is no Co headlining tour. Anyone who thinks that is either high or stupid; ie, Back Talker.

Uh, who?

Firstly, offer herbie a Wendy's lifetime Burger card, good for unlimited beefasauras triple stacks, and ask , no beg him to manage. If he says no, ask Jon Landeau. He would probably take it. And if he says no, ask me, I will do it.

Keep this in mind:

Without Journey or Bryan Adams, Leppard draws about 4,000. They suck these days. Saw them on the X tour without help (good show actually) but they have NO drawing power on their own.

I agree! Journey is opening and could no doubt draw more on their own.

Keep in mind however, when this tour was booked, Journey didn't have a lead singer. They do now.
I think Journey should get Adams and tour together. The genres to me, are more closely linked.

You have a point there, Bryan Adams would make a hellofalot more sense, but look: Journey thinks they are bubble gum rock. They think DL IS in their genre. If for a Burger King card, Herbie would manage this band, and slap sense it to Neal, I suggest we raise the money here and get him one. If we eached contributed the amount of money wasted on Generations, would it be enough of a start until the mega bucks started rolling in again?

No mega bucks rolling in for almost ANY rock band in 2006 - especially a band with members in their 50's. The hits are over. "Arrival" would have sold a lot........ in the 1980's.

American Idol bullshit is what sells. Just have to face it.

That was Def Leppard's non-promoted minor league baseball tour. This year they have tons of promtion. Even without Journey they'd still be playing to 15,000 THIS year. It's all about promtion, radio interviews, etc. They did everything right for this tour and Journey is riding their coattails. Crowds are consistently in the 20,000 range and it's probably 12-15 Def Leppard and 5-8 (thousand) Journey. Journey needs promotion. Of course Perry +promotion= Mega-Tour. (assuming he could, and would, want to do it.

You make some great points! Thanks for doing so in a positive vein. Good food for thought! I especially like and agree with your phrase: "I wanted Augerri to do well, but it seems the band kept marginalizing him." It's a shame that took place. I doubt that this will be the case with JSS and if it starts to become that for him, he'll likely walk.

Rolling Stones, Eagles, U2, Fleetwood Mac, Bon Jovi?...it can be done. But even if you're are right, they could still do better than what their doing now musically. Cheap Trick still puts out new material every year or so. They still sounds like they always did, with good new songs from time to time, and they aren't getting any younger. They play small venues too, and they don't seem to care. They just do what they've always liked to do, and you have to respect that, even if you don't like their music.

The five bands you mentioned all have their singer(s) that were there when they were commercially successful...Journey does not...not even close.

A direct quote from a Beano post on the VH board, from a thread suggesting that Michael Anthony and Alex Van Halen comprise the most boring rhythm section ever in rock:

"If Deen Castranova didn't sing better than any lead singer in rock, I would say Journey would have the most boring.."

If you're going to play Spelling Police, at least spend some time at the freakin' academy, eh?

Journey and Bryan Adams toured for Frontiers...that was sweet then ans would be even sweeter now. Adams had just come out with the Cuts like a Knife album...he rocked the house...BTW Journey had a lead singer when they booked this tour...AUgeri was replaced 3 or 4 shows in...tours are booked months in advance...get it straight brother man...and here I went and thought the way all the BS spews from your mouth that you were never wrong...twice in one thread... OUCH!!!

Beano...just curious as to what your substance of choice is for huffing: glue or paint?

Go ahead...post even one of the "million" examples you've seen of my "awful spelling." Good luck with that assignment, lol. In fact, good luck even finding a freakin' typo from me.

I'm a journalist, dude, and one who has proofed his own copy ever since I made a spelling mistake in my first published concert review.

You got owned on your criticism of another poster's spelling Augeri's name wrong, and yet you lack the sack to admit it.

No big surprise there, lol...
