He's just doing an impression... I'm happy Journey didn't hire a REAL "clone".

Hugo is the real deal. I could do without the Perry "clone" clothes and BS but he rocks. His own stuff is just as good as Journey IMHO. I think Journey missed the boat ....

Good singer, and a sonically fantastic interpretation of Perry.

Still, it hits me as kinda creepy for some reason. And when he hits his highs, he lays his head towards his left shoulder. With Perry, it's always been the right.

I know, I know...pickin' nits...

;^)

The difference between Jeremey and Hugo (for me anyway) is that Hugo, while he has the look of Perry, his vocals while good, just seem to be lacking the depth and fullness that Perry had. Jeremey on the other hand, doesn't have the doppleganger look of Perry, but his vocals have all the qualities that Perry's had. I have heard Jeremey sing stuff that is as far from the Journey/Steve Perry realm as possible, but unless he tries to sound like whoever he is covering, he sounds like Steve Perry doing a cover of whatever he is singing. Dont' know if that makes sense, what I'm basically trying to say it Jeremey's natural voice has the same tone and qualities that Perry's does.

Back to my corner now.....

From what I've heard, on Jeremy's site, I agree. Hugo looks dopey doing the moves and he doesn't have a lot of power. Jeremy seems to have that from what I've heard.

Is he channeling Perry or what?!

The music's too loud and "Perry" isn't loud enough though.

Forgot to add...when Hugo speaks, he speaks in his head voice too.

His voice always sounds thin to me.
Would take Augeri or Jeff over this guy.

You know the only thing that "annoys" me with listening to Hugo is that his voice isn't "true" like Perry's was (at least most of the time). Hugo is very good, but he floats between the note and going flat or sharp. I have a number of Hugo's CDs and I like them, but I've always thought his voice was a bit thin.

It's funny to read the forum on Evolution's page. Everyone thinks that Hugo should be the replacement singer for Journey now. One guy even offered to "tell Journey about him" when he sees them. I seem to remember that years ago, Neal made a comment about Hugo and that it would be "too weird" to have him in the band. Don't remember the exact wording, but it would seem weird to watch someone essentially represent Perry in movements, vocals and everything else on stage and yet NOT be Perry.

Didn't you mean -

"Don't remember the exact wording, but it would seem weird to watch someone essentially represent Perry in movements, vocals and everything else on stage and yet NOT be an a-hole!"

Sorry, putting words in Neal's mouth!

I think this whole thing goes to show that there are people out there that can perform this music, whether or not you are Kevin Chalfant, Hugo, Jeremey, or Jeff Scott Soto, it doesn't seem to me like finding a fill-in for Steve Augeri would be such a herculean task. Fuck, give Hugo a haircut, dye job, and a sports jersey, and the Perry look-a-like stigma disappears... :D

Yeah Jeremey, but he still doesn't have "that" sound like you do, so regardless of what he looked like those songs would still be missing something.

From what I've heard of HUGO, he definitely has some talent, but he's TOO MUCH like SP. He needs to find his OWN voice, and go in that direction instead of somebody else's schtick. There's plenty of melodic rock to be made, and there's ALREADY a SP, so what's the point? In Spanish, "ya pa que?"

I'm glad they went with JSS.

Discussion of using him to front Journey aside... the "too much like SP" is his schtick. It makes money. Like all the Elvis and Beatles tributes out there, people will pay to go see recreations of their favorites when the real thing isn't around anymore. I'd pay to see it, should the band come this way.

I think Hugo, Jeremey or Kevin C. could cover the material as intended. I think each singer has a bit of their own style but can cover the old material with the right tone and range. Jeremey definitely has a strong voice, Chalfant has his own deal and Hugo can clearly cover the material even if some folks think his voice is "thin". I'd give Hugo the nod due to his demonstrated track record as a writer. For fucks sakes, Hugo has written better Journey stuff than Journey has since 86 and possibly 83. Has anyone actually listened to Valentine? That has to be one of my favorite cds, period. It fuckin rocks. Neil, get off your ass and put out some new rock for once in a row, will you?

As Jeremey said, give Hugo a hair cut, have him quite acting like Perry while keeping the non-asshole part, and put him up front.

L8r,

Aaron
