Your favorite songs and what they say about your personality

I've heard this discussion on various talk shows and thought it might be interesting to try here...

What songs are on your Ipod favorites list (or other list if you don't have an Ipod...I don't) and what do they say about your personality?

Mine (let's try about 10 tunes here)?

Hole Hearted ~ Extreme...My favorite acoustic tune. For me, it has a strong spiritual connotation, about not being complete without God.

Cliffs of Dover ~ Eric Johnson...The perfect combination of technique, feeling, and melody that I've ever heard in a guitar instrumental.

Rubicon ~ Journey...My sig says it all, "LIVE LIFE AND LIGHT THE FUSE". I love the message of this song.

Angel's Lullaby ~ Richard Marx...I found this song on the internet a couple of months before my wife and I left for Europe to adopt our daughter, Angelica. The lyrics to the first verse go like this...

"I was never alive
Till the day I was blessed with you
When I hold you late at night
I know what I was put here to do
I turn off the world
And listen to you sigh
And I will sing my angel's lullaby"

I love to sing and I'd sing this song to her but I'd never be able to finish 'cause I'd be weeping like a baby.

Mother Love ~ Queen...The last vocal that Freddie Mercury ever did. It's amazing how strong his voice still sounded and it was only recorded weeks or perhaps even days before his death on November 24th, 1991. Makes me think about how bad some people really have it compared to me. The lyrics are very sad. Sounds like he didn't have a real friend in the world...

"I've walked too long in this lonely lane
I've had enough of this same old game
I'm a man of the world and they say that I'm strong
But my heart is heavy and my hope is gone
Out in the city, in the cold world outside
I don't want pity, just a safe place to hide
Mama please, let me back inside"

The baby crying at the end of the track, as if he is going back in time to his birth, when he knew his "mother's love", gets me every time.

Mission ~ Rush...A very inspiring lyric. I used to have the lyrics to this tacked up on my wall at work.

"Hold your fire
Keep it burning bright
Hold the flame 'til the dream ignites
A spirit with a vision is a dream
With a mission"

Spread Your Wings ~ Silent Force...This song was written about D.C. Cooper's (lead singer) son. I don't have a son but it makes me think of my daughter.

"Spread your wings, little man
Grab the sun, the hopes and dreams
Of everyone lies in your arms
Spread your wings, little man
Embrace the love that sends you on your way

My promise to you is that I'll do the best I can
Protect you from harm, but there's only so much I can do
You'll be left without a weight upon your shoulders
Oh how I wish that I could save you from this cold world"

Suite Madame Blue ~ Styx...Perhaps my favorite song to sing along to. I also love the acoustic intro to it, "Prelude 12" on the "Equinox" album.

A Place for You ~ Wayne Watson...Another song that makes me think of my daughter. This one's written from a Christian perspective about international adoptions...

"One little stranger, one in a million
One homeless angel, one helpless child
In the fields that God has sewn, blessings live, life is grown
An empty space, the Father knew
There is a place for you"

So come 'cross the ocean, safe to the harbor
Into a family two worlds away
Far from your tragedy, safe and secure
All along the Father knew, there is a place for you"

I thought about the "So come 'cross the ocean" part as we landed back here in the States on our flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.

Turn of the Century ~ Yes...This is just one of the most beautiful songs and melodies I can think of. Jon Anderson's voice is perfect for it and Steve Howe plays some gorgeous classical guitar passages on this.

So, I guess most of my picks are songs that remind me of my daughter or have an unplifting message of some kind.

Looking forward to hearing some others.

I'll use the blueprint of your post,Dave.

So,from the top of my head,in no particular order:

Kelly Clarkson ~ “Breakaway” – great inspiring song, awesome voice

“I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky
I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun”

Nickelback ~ "Photograph" - still one of my fave songs to play once in a while.
Makes me think of my younger years, brings back fun memories. Each time I hear it,I have a different video for it in my head.LOL

Frank Sinatra ~ "My Way" – story of my life so far… :) ..and what I would like to say when I'll leave this Earth.

Bryan Adams ~ "Open Road" – fantastic song to drive to,and a powerful message also

"I'm sitting at the wheel
I got a green light
Not afraid of nothin' ‘cause heart and soul
I'm built for life"

Steve Perry ~ "Melody" – perfectly describes what music means to me.I would get sick without it – music inspires me,makes me feel alive and keeps my heart & soul in shape.

Shania Twain ~ "She’s not just a pretty face" – a great message for all the powerful women out there, without sounding feminist.

Sting ~ "If I ever loose my faith in you"

"You could say I lost my faith in science and progress
You could say I lost my belief in the holy church
You could say I lost my sense of direction
You could say all of this and worse but

If I ever lose my faith in you
There'd be nothing left for me to do"

Journey ~ "Escape" – one of their best songs ever
And "Daydream" for the eerie sounds and inspiring message

"Those bright diamonds a-once were stone,
Rollin' down a silver stream.
Yes, those bright diamonds a-once were stone."

There are so many more….Songs that make me happy,or reflective, songs to drive to,to make love to,to sing along…way to many great tunes out there.

Very nice topic,Dave. :) I like your choices, especially the Eric Johnson tune.My all time fave guitar song, too.

I was responding to coversation PC's post, copied a section of it ,then pasted it, then responded that Randy Jackson helped produce the album/CD that this song is on.

The only thing I've adopted into my household is a cat and a dog.

Dave, Turn of the Century is definitely a fav of mine. The whole Going for the One album was brilliant. Yes was my first 'official concert'.

Mine: Song of Scheherazade by Renaissance. Annie Haslam has by far the most perfect female soprano voice ever known to man. Period. End of discussion. Everyone else,... is just wishin'.

Come What May from the soundtrack of Moulin Rouge. Guaranteed goosebumps everytime.

Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' by Journey. I will nah-nah forever. Proud to wave my bic lighter on high.

Holiday by Greenday. If it's on..my volume is at an 11. God I love to blast that song.

Enter Sandman by Metallica. James. Nuff said.

Suffragette City by David Bowie. Wham bam thank you maam!

Dream On by Aerosmith. 1973. The first release of this song. I kissed bubblegum goodbye forever after I heard that song.[/b]

Lazy Sunday, so I have time to put up a few..music in my iPod range's from Classical to Heavy Metal. Alway's open to new stuff. Hard to narrow it down to a few song's. What I'm listening to depend's on my mood, but here's a few choice's today.1) Let's Stay Together---Al Green---love old R&B, Al's one of the greatest, saw him a couple years ago, still in great voice.2) Born Under A Bad Sign---Albert King---Really into the blue's, used to go to a little blue's club where you just sit back and listen. Have moved since, miss it.3) At Last---Etta James---Etta has one of the greatest female voice's ever, it's lowered with age, but who's does'nt.4)Can't Let You Go---Jeff Golub---Only like mellow jazz like this tune. Steve Perry's simple line throughout is amazingly sexy.5) Purple Rain---Neil Zaza----A current fave that I just heard of recently. Amazing.6)Patiently---Journey---Houston, live, 1980----It's hard to pick only one, but SP's octave range here is beyond belief. Greatest male vocalist ever.I could go on and on and include more genre's, but this is too much typing at once for me! Ha ha!

My favorite song of all time is "Wouldn't You Like to Know Me" by Paul Stanley - 1978

Other notables:

Heroes Die Young - Waysted
Profession of Violence - UFO
Cold Sweat - Thin Lizzy
I Surrender - Rainbow
Never Had a Lot To Lose - Cheap Trick

and tons of others. It changes every day.

Following Conversationpc's format, here's just a few of my favourites of the moment. I would preface this by saying that I find the lyrics of Rush songs probably the most inciteful, intelligent and meaningful lyrics I've encountered anywhere in music, and they've provided the backdrop to my life for the past thirty years. A couple of tunes that are particularly meaningful right now are:-

Time Stand Still ~ Rush...

"I'm not looking back
But I want to look around me now
See more of the people and the places that surround me now
Freeze this moment a little bit longer
Make each sensation a little bit stronger"

Life seems to be flashing by so quickly right now, with so many demands on time, I'd just like to pause and actually take more time to appreciate what is happening around me while it's happening.

Witch Hunt ~ Rush...

"Quick to judge
Quick to anger
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand..."

Particularly relevant to some of these forums at times.

Last Frontier ~ Jimmy Barnes...

"Back in a land across the sea
They found another war
They asked the Anzacs to believe
In what they're fighting for

And they sent them to another land
Into the greatest fear
To fight and die for freedoms cry
And for the last frontier"

I saw him in concert last night, in Bristol. A low key show, with his son on drums (cool drummer) and daughter on backing vocals (hot!). Somebody called out from the audience 'where's Neal and Jonathan?' and he responded with a chuckle 'probably playing in Journey somewhere' - a reference to the fact that his most popular material is the stuff written by, and played by, NS and JC on he Freight Train Heart album.

This bit of this song is one I always have to sing along to. I'm not Australian, but if I was it would make me proud to be one.

Believe In Me ~ JSS... Great tune by a great frontman. It would be really cool if Journey could incorporate this Journey-esque song into their live set before the end of the tour. Neal already knows the guiter solo for it LOL.

Taking On the World ~ Gun...One of a collection of great tunes from what I though was one of the best debut albums I've ever heard. I can't believe the average age of the band was only 17 when they recorded this back in 1990.

We Are the Champions ~ Queen...Sounds passe and dated now from constant overplaying on TV and radio. But I remember when this first came out I though it was awesome. So inspiring.

Once Bitten Twice Shy ~ Ian Hunter...

"I didnt know ya got a rock n roll record
Until a saw your picture on another guys jacket
You told me I was the only one
And look at you now, well its dark as its dumb"

Like Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, this is one of those songs where you cannot help but start headbanging to it when the drum roll at this point gives way the the heavy guitar coming in. Ian Hunter is one of the greatest but under-appreciated lyricists of our times. His social commentary on life is cutting and uncompromising.

Well. that's just a few that are currently on my favourite's list

I agrre. It's one of my all time favourite albums and I often have it playing in the car. I know it's not well loved among dedicated Rush fans, due to its keyboard dominated songs and even tempo, but I really like every song on it.

I'm a bigger fan of the "Fly By Night" through "Moving Pictures" era myself but I have gained a much better appreciation for their material after that, specifically "Power Windows" and "Hold Your Fire". I love both of those albums.

I have a favorite song....but it has a bittersweet connection for me...

Jrnyman28, you remember back in 2001 on the VH1 board...I mentioned that I had 3 friends die within a 6-month time?

Well, one of them, Kelly, had a favorite song: "Total Eclipse of the Heart" - Bonnie Tyler. We went out to the Nightclub where I used to work, and, yes, they had Karaoke....so she asked me to sing this song for her. I did and she LOVED it! She sat there with the biggest smile on her face....God I'm crying right now.....because I can still see it....

Little did I know that about 3 years later, the words would take on an entirely different meaning....sometimes, it just comes on the radio when I least expect it; driving in my car....

Turn around, Every now and then I get a little bit lonely and you're never coming round
Turn around, Every now and then I get a little bit tired of listening to the sound of my tears
Turn around, Every now and then I get a little bit nervous that the best of all the years have gone by
Turn around, Every now and then I get a little bit terrified and then I see the look in your eyes
Turn around bright eyes, Every now and then I fall apart
Turn around bright eyes, Every now and then I fall apart

Turn around, Every now and then I get a little bit restless and I dream of something wild
Turn around, Every now and then I get a little bit helpless and I'm lying like a child in your arms
Turn around, Every now and then I get a little bit angry and I know I've got to get out and cry
Turn around, Every now and then I get a little bit terrified but then I see the look in your eyes
Turn around bright eyes, Every now and then I fall apart
Turn around bright eyes, Every now and then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
Cause we'll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time
I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark
We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight

Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I'm only falling apart
There's nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there's only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart

INSTRUMENTAL

Turn around bright eyes
Turn around bright eyes

Turnaround, Every now and then I know you'll never be the boy you always wanted to be
Turnaround, Every now and then I know that you'll always be the only boy that wanted me the way that I am
Turnaround, Every now and then I know that there's no one in the universe as magical and wonderful as you
Turnaround, Every now and then I know there's nothing any better there's nothing that I just wouldn't do
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and then I fall apart
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
Cause we'll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time
I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark
We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight

Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I'm only falling apart
Nothing I can do

A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there's only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart
A total eclipse of the heart
A total eclipse of the heart

Turn around bright eyes
Turn around bright eyes
Turn around

I've always loved this song by Nina Simone

Turn Me On

Like a flower waiting to bloom
like a light bulb in a dark room
I am siting here waiting for you to come home and turn me on
like the desert waiting for rain
like a school kid waiting for spring
I am siting here waiting for you to come back home and turn me on
My poor heart, it's been so dark
since you've been gone
after all your the one who turned me off
now your the only one that can turn me back on
uh
my hi-fi's waiting for a new tune
and my glass is waiting for some fresh ice-cubes
I'm just siting here waiting for you to come on
back home and turn me on.

A favorite of mine from Bon Jovi's Bed of Roses

I want to lay you on a bed of roses
For tonite I sleep on a bed on nails
I want to be just as close as the Holy Ghost is
And lay you down on bed of roses

Okay, I sort of responded a bit off topic, but I'll come back and fix this later ;)
