The World Play effect

Postby Jeremey fan forever » Mon Aug 14, 2006 2:53 am

Does anyone think that World Play hurt Generations? World Play is so much better than Generations, and its clear Neal cared about that project more. I'm not saying I wish there was no World Play, I love it! JSS and Neal kick ass together. Check out Soul Goes on, just CLASSIC. Whole disk is great, I still play it often, Generations hardly ever. If Journey were in that kind of writing mode, could have been great.

Thought that album sucked. I've listened to it twice. If Neal wants to do another band, go back to Hardline. THAT was a good CD.

"World Play" makes the Hardline CD sound like someone blowing chunks in comparison.

World Play is head and shoulders better than Generations..

Anyone figure out the message in the first song, "The Highest Ground?" What exactly is the mesage? I would love to know what you guys think.

This ought to be fun.

I agree it's way better but I don't think it hurt sales because only diehard Journey/Neal fans were even aware it existed.

Generations... I like Deen singing A Better Life, Faith in the Heartland is a good song, everything else is somewhere between lame & mediocre in my opinion.

Oh, touche. Thanks for that. That makes Neal wahed up and Paris Hilton is the future of music. What a stupid thing to say. Besides maybe you, were any of us basing our support of Journey these days on able sales and what people think?

You are funny.

But what do you think was its affect on the QUALITY of Generations, not the sales. Sales go to Paris Hilton these days, so I don't personally care about sales, do you?

U make a good point. I didn't think of that. The impression Neal gave in interviews was that he really wanted SS to be viable & to make him a household name. It also seemed like he had a ton of fun writing & playing with JSS. Maybe after 30 years the whole concept of Journey is just a way to earn a living & he's kinda bored w/it. SS was like a trip back to his youth and it resurged that part of him that loves doing this. I wonder how Neal must feel that everyone associates Journey w/Perry, not him. Perry was the voice we all knew & it's not uncommon for people to know the singer. But for a guy w/Neal's incredible talent, sometimes that must be a letdown.

I don't think Worldplay hurt Generations. I think everyone who wanted Generations got it at the concert. It had no air play so it wasn't like people heard a song on the radio and said, "Hey I need to go get that CD." It may have even helped. Soto fans might have realized how awesome Neal is and said "I have to get that dude's new CD with Journey."

I agree with you, Deano. I really tried to like Generations, I did. I only liked FITH and A Better Life from the get-go and it never went any further than that. Soul SirkUS blows Generations away, IMO.

The opening riffs of Highest Ground.....WOW. Neal just swaggering... Overall I think World Play does stack up nice against Generations. It was not as immediate as Gens was for me....but a good timebomb. Gens is just a tad better but that's not damning either record with faint praise.

Song for Song, Generations was no match for World Play. I like Generations, but LOVE World Play, it still gets regular play here. Generations gets sporadic play.

Generations was "thrown together." Isn't even a real CD.

Sorry NIG, it just is a piece of crap when you get past the first 3 songs....

Opposite effect for me.
While I love a few select "Generations" tracks much more than anything on SS, in terms of overall consistency, SS is such a stronger record.
Every track features a great hook.
It took me one spin of Sirkus to hear the strong melodies, the choruses....and have them reverberate inside my head.
On certain tracks of "Generations", I find I'm still looking for the hooks/choruses.

Ok. I'm game.
Now that you mention it, these lyrics could apply to both Perry and Augeri.
Any message JSS was trying to convey (if any) is most obvious in the following two stanzas.

"i'm sick of wasting time with u,
i dont understand how i let u in-in the 1st place
i feel i've been here once before
i shoulda remembered losing my way, no way

This one sounds like its about Augeri to me.
In fact, these lyrics may be a little too right on the nose.

"did u mean 2 stab me in the back
it wasn't enough that u sucked the life outta me
you're best 2 turn & run away
i dont wanna fight cuz i found the way 2
..."

Though slightly more subtle, this one sounds like Perry.

Reverse for me. I do like Generations, but I love World Play. I think Generations gives each menber of chance to shine as does World Play, but World Play is just better. I would have preferred a SS tour this summer over Journey. The writing chemistry Jeff and Neal share is refreshing. Just my opinion, nothing else.
