I can't vote because I don't think any of them are overrated.

Really? I can. In high school my friends ridiculed me for liking Journey. Many of them always said Led Zeppelin were the greatest of all time, but I hated their sound. Still hate it. :)

Yeah, there are a lot of bands that I don't dig, but appreciate their talent.

I can't vote either. Led Zeppelin, I can see why people think they are overrated even though they are really not, they are true pioneers of 70s rock n roll. Jimi Hendrix, I mean he inspired guitar legends like Stevie Ray Vaughan. He made the Fender Stratocaster famous, that is the only kind of electric guitar I own. The Beatles, I don’t even know where to begin the things they did for music and rock n roll, they are so great in number it is astonishing. They inspired Dennis DeYoung and Styx in their recent recording of “I Am The Walrus.” Journey also recorded a Beatles song on their Look Into The Future album - “It’s All Too Much. The Beatles are the farthest thing from overrated. Those who voted for them I am curious as to why, please feel free to share. Why didn’t you add the Rolling Stones or U2 to that list so I could vote.

Rolling Stones and U2 don't make the list because this list is only comprised of Artists that are constantly accused of being the greatest of all time, who I frequently turn off when they come on the radio. Although I do like some Beatles and Hendrix. But not much.

I’m sorry to say but you are missing out man. Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix okay I can see you not being that in to them. But the Beatles I mean you can’t deny all that they have done and with that respect you can enjoy their music to the fullest potential. It’s all about respect and admiration, those things they have truly earned. I’m interested to hear which songs you like and which ones you don’t like.

I know I may be in the minority here, but I have never, ever 'got' the Beatles. In terms of musicianship, I've never regarded them as anything but average and, while their later songwriting has some merit, their early songs do absolutely nothing for me, and didn't even in the 60's. In my opinion their success was more down to timing and image rather than ability.

The Beatles were the first Boy Band, who were given the longevity to learn to write better because of the era in which they existed. If those same musicians (well maybe not John Lennon, but certainly the others) were starting out today, they probably wouldn't have made it past their first album.

I also think Hendrix is a little overrated. Its not his fault in this case, as he was an exceptional musician. I just think his early death raised his importance beyond what he had actually achieved to that point. Psychologically, people assume that his meteoric rise would have continued unabated had he lived longer, whereas the reality is always different. Its the same with any bright star who dies early - James Dean, Bon Scott, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Janis Joplin, Randy Rhoads etc.

I'm not a great fan of Led Zeppelin material and rarely listen to their stuff an more. However, as a Classic Rock fan, I have to admit that Led Zeppelin were a huge influence on so many of the bands who I do admire. Even my favoutite band Rush were a Led Zeppelin clone on their first album. Robert Plant's stage presence (along with Paul Rodgers from Free) set the blueprint for nearly all subsequent frontmen to follow. So, no I don't think they are overrated, and all four of them, as musicians, would stack up well against today's crop of musicians.

I can't vote either, none of these artists are overrated in my mind. The influence of them all is major, especially on a band like Journey.

I voted for The Beatles, but only because I enjoy their overall catalog of music less than the others. I still have about twenty-something songs of theirs on my favorites list.

Beatles RULE.
Beatles a Boy Band?? Hardly. They might've been good looking guys and were huge to little girls, but that was the times, not the band's fault. They were true innovators. Every album they did was a progression and took the whole rock medium to another stage. Without the Beatles, there'd be NONE of what we know today.

CLASSIC ZEP is the BEST of all time!! Journey is GREAT as well, but ZEP is the GREATEST!! Beattles are next, just because they were so talented and diversified in what they wrote and sang.

Rick

In my book it would be
ZEP
The Beattles
Journey in the top 10 somewhere...

Zep can't be the best off all time. Flat guitars and is that a yowling cat? Oh, that was singing...my bad

Plant could actually sing halfway decent at the time when he wasn't yowling in that nasty falsetto.

Plant's vocals live have always been atrocious IMO. And Page is sloppy as hell. For most overrated of the three, I say Hendrix.

Beatles are the only ones of the three that I actually don't think are overrated.

Overrated, I vote Zep... any band that gets an hour of music on certain nights of the week on radio stations is overkill. They might be good, but the hype makes them overrated.

There are many bands that have talent but are overrated... Nirvana is another...

And let me tell you that despite that, they are still the two most requested bands, hand down.

OMG YES. ANY DJ would wholeheartedly agree with that, although that has been the standard bathroom song for DJ's for years, so we don't always hear the whole thing. ;) We do have a "Get the Led Out" every night at 9pm, with three Zep songs, but just last week, we took their box set of every album and put EVERY SINGLE song they have in our computer system, so there is much variety and we don't have to play the same songs over over. Even on a regular day to day basis, my pd mixes up pretty good.

If pressed to chose one, it would be Hendrix. Hendrix was an absolute Guitar God for his day and an innovator, but his carreer did not have the longevity. By today's standards, I think he would be just another good guitar player.

The Beatles: solid muscians for their time. Good song writers and performers. They, along with the Stones and The Who, created the bridge from Elvis and Buddy Holly to bands like Zeppelin, Bad Co., Fleetwood Mac, Journey, etc.

Led Zeppelin: One of the first bands, along with the help of a continuing halucinagentic drug scene of the sixties, to take music beyond being just music. They made it a spriritual experience for some. Great songwriters in my opinion. Jimmy Page was not the cleanest guitar player, but was definately one of the best axe slingers of the seventies. They, along with a few others of their time (Floyd, Purple, etc.), were the ones who changed the music and made it "Rock" music, not the 50's and 60s "Rock and Roll" music. Sure there were some pretty far out bands in the 60s also. But they never put it together into such a listenable way as Zeppelin did. With that said, are the overplayed? I would say a little bit now, but I would say they were way overplayed in the late 80s and early 90s. But they are not overrated.

JMO
