There are several boots out there of Perry era Journey concerts - I have a few of them myself from Japan. Plus, we have the 81 DVD which equates to the engineered 2001 DVD.

There are people who say that Augeri sounds great ALL THE TIME (I don't know WHAT they are listening to). There are people who say that Augeri had some rough nights, but on average sounded good. There are people who say he never sounded that great to begin with.

So, pitting up Perry era concert vids against Augeri era concert vids, is there any controversy regarding Perry's performance? I mean, you never hear "Wow, Perry sounded 'off' in Osaka" or something like that.

One performance I have has Perry a little flat for half a song... He holds his nose and "blows" to pop his ears (you can tell he is under the weather - doesn't have the Oomph he usually did), makes a motion to turn up his monitor, and is pitch perfect the rest of the concert. This was an 81 concert.

So, was there ever a question of Perry's live performance such as with every show Augeri did?

Steve Perry had many off nights, health is something that can make or break you sorta say, but if you calculate the good with the bad... there is way more good then bad...

perry was the best,, he had the sound,, augeri and soto would say that i bet,, he certainly was amazing!! or still is for that matter,,

I'm not saying Augeri is a better singer, far from it, but Perry was much younger when he was singing those songs, in his late 20s through mid 30s when he was with the band. Of course, he was also doing lots more shows as well, compared to Augeri, but age does play a big factor regardless.

Anyway, Augeri definitely didn't sound great all the time. He sounded very good during the first couple of years and good for the most part on the "Arrival" tour. It got kinda spotty after that.

Don't get me wrong - this is not another "Flame Augeri" thread (believe it or not). I was just wondering if there was the same trend with Perry's vocal performances as we had when Augeri was with the band.

It's tough to compare since they were both at different stages of their careers. Just with Journey...Perry = late 20s to mid 30s. Augeri = late 30s to mid 40s. To me, Augeri's voice sounded more likely to give out sooner after singing those amazingly difficult tunes, just because he was raspier, especially being a good 10 years older than Perry when he first started singing them. That has to take a big toll, even though the amount of shows they were doing was drastically less than when Perry was at his peak with the band.

I have a live version of ROR and a number of others (CDs). There are parts where Perry did not sound like his normally great self. In my opinion - I think he was pushing it way too much and the music was going way too fast. I HATE when a band does that with a song! It was a live broadcast to Japan, I think from Detroit. Heck, I'd have to look it up.

From my experiences of hearing/seeing Journey and Perry live, it didn't seem to me that anything was done to enhance Perry's sound while on stage. This is not to say that it couldn't have happened here or there, but I have no clue. I do know that when my wife and I saw him live in Fresno, CA at the start of his FTLOSM tour, he was in great voice. We were three rows (center) from the stage. Everything sounded really great. Crap, you could hear him breathe in the mic. It was obvious that he was singing because of the obvious movement in his throat muscles.

One thing about Perry, he really knew how to mix his mics and what he wanted the "end" product to sound like in the speakers.

I saw Perry at the Cow Palace in Frisco, '86. Haha, Cow Palace..sounds like a great place to host a BT party...

Anyway, Perry sang the wrong lines in Ask the Lonely, and you didn't even notice. The guy was simply the best vocalist ever.

However, I doubt Perry could hold a candle to Augeris string of 77 concerts of perfection in 05...

Thanks, Topic... I needed another excuse to add to the list of "Reasons why Augeri sounded bad". Now I can throw HIS AGE in there.
