that without Steve Perry Journey is pretty much fucked. WITH HIM, the music industry these days would be a challenge. JSS...great guy, great artist and great voice. However, I see him having no future with Journey. He can't sing the catalog and he SHOULD NOT come on board after what they did to Augeri. I hope the shit they did backfires and they have no one to board this sinking ship (except the one who sang them to fame). THAT IS WHAT IS RIGHT. I've been VERY hard on Augeri in the past, but if he's out, everyone else should be too. St. John I usually think ur pretty cool but I don't get this. Why do u want Journey to be over? We're all fans here of the band, the music, the last 30+ years. A lot has changed in that time. Actually everything but the lead guitarist has gone thru some changes.

I think we have to give JSS a chance before we say he can't do the catalog. Augeri struggled in the beginning (not to mention later on--let's leave that out of this post for now). In July JSS went out on stage with very little or no rehearsal of those songs. Whatever rehearsal he had on his own wasn't w/the guys so that's different. Have u heard him do Journey songs outside of Journey? He really does a nice job and puts his own spin on them. I say, let's see how he sounds now after a coupla weeks off and maybe some more rehearsals. If he still doesn't sound good, then say he can't sing the catalog. Until then, I think we have to wait and see & give the poor guy a chance.

Regardless I want Journey to continue to do live shows whether they ever a record again or not. They can still bring it & I'm a fan. If Neal needs a wheelchair & can barely hold his head up let alone his guitar, then it might be time to pack it in. Until then, let the Journey continue. I'll be there.

First off, thanx for the respect. I love this band as much as anyone should. And I don't want Journey to be over. But let's be honest....what we've seen for the last 8 years was Journey minus vocals. Concerts were Neal kicking ass, Jon doing his thing, and Ross pumping bass. Then there was Deen and Steve.....doing an admirable job. It's not the same. Really, JSS is putting himself in a shitty situation. He's gonna blow his fuckin' voice out on the Dirty Dozen. They're so far out of his range...and that is NOT a shot at him. He has so much going for him that I hope he finishes this tour, brings in a shitload of new fans and goes back to what HE DOES BEST. He has so many years left that I hope he doesn't go for the Journey "lottery." he's not Augeri...he has a huge fan base already.

Perry hasn't been with Journey for over 8 years now. Perry hasn't played a live show in 10 years.

As much as I adore the man - he truly is one of the all time GREATS - it is time to accept these facts and get on and enjoy your life.

I agree with this 100%. Jeff's a good singer, but it's apparent from the live stuff floating around out there that he will have problems. Augeri had problems in the beginning, but NOTHING like the stuff we're hearing from JSS.
Now, if Journey would take the friggin hint and drop the song keys a bit, they'd have a chance at saving JSS's voice.
Also, we've seen 8 years with Augeri (who I like a lot and respect, sorry kids) and the music industry basically ignored the band. Unfortunately, I think the ONLY way Journey has validity in the music business is to be back with Perry. It'll never happen, but if they want to get back on top, that's what they'll have to do.
NO ONE will accept Journey NOT SOUNDING like Journey. JSS sounds nothing like them. What they should do is change the name of the band and go in a different direction so that they're not held up against what was.
Otherwise, they won't be able to grow as a band. I think that JSS is in a losing position and should go his own way. This isn't a slam against him, it's just I think he's in a crappy position.

You are right, once they started touring behind Frontiers, it DID become the Steve Perry Band and slowly started the band's decline... ROR was a bunch of pop-bullshit that Perry wanted to do and then, after keeping the fans and the rest of the band on hold for 10 years, Perry leads them into the studio for TBF, the absolute WORST Journey album ever! He led them to success but also destryed them from within. Can they ever reach that popularity again, probably not but that is mostly due to the climate of the music biz these days. Can the band excite the fuck out of there fans with a new era revolved around JSS, HELL YEA!

The biggest mistake Journey ever made was giving up on the oringinal reunion group with Rollie and Chalfant, and going with Perry to make TBF. Perry screwed them once betweein ROR and TBF, and to my amazement Schon and Cain let him do it to them again by going with him for TBF. Biggest mistake of thier carreers.

The Steve Perry Band? Schon and/or Cain co-wrote all the songs on ROR and TBF with Perry. Jonathan Cain was the guy who made the call to fire Smith and Valory. And Cain and Schon willingly went into the reunion with Perry in 1996.

My point is...Schon and Cain are just as 'responsible' for the material and many of the key decisions after Frontiers.

I don't underestimate how much leverage Perry had. I'm just saying that Schon and Cain weren't total victims/pussies. And they co-wrote much of the material that Perry is routinely blamed for.

Calls made to Ross and Smitty are not.

I've never heard that Jon did the dirty work of firing in 1986. All I remember from BTM is Perry let them go.

CAIN's WRITING was about 70% their success... Perry was just in at the right time to sing the songs...... MHO...infinity,evolution and Departure---were NOT huge sellers... ESCAPE was the start of the huge selling LP's and concert sellouts....open arms who wrote it Cain... faithfully on Frontiers who wrote it...Cain.. I would give CAIN credit almost more than Perry... thats just me....

It's not at ALL due to any one band member. Perry and Cain, maybe. Without each other they would have stayed only mildly successful.

Perry's unique sound, presence and exhilarating vocal ability IS the indelible sound of Journey. It doesn't matter who the original members were/are. Journey hit the summit and the mother lode with Perry. The glory days of Journey ended in 1998. It doesn't matter who did what to whom and when. They should have left Journey alone and tried to blaze a new trail with something else.

From what I remember herbie Herbert said the stuff with Chalfant and Rolie was "going to make people forget about Steve Perry in a hurry." What are the odds of us ever hearing any of this material? I would buy it or download it off of Itunes in a minute!! I'm not familiar with rights and royalties and other music dealings. What would it take for them to release a few songs from that incarnation? Hell, it would outsell Generations I bet. Any thoughts?
