Tree....

Hope you don't mind I did this...but this deserves its own thread.

Once again, Steve improvs the melody - COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from the countless other times I've heard this song done live.

Enjoy....8)

That's a good version of the song but the "chasing thunder" part borders on urban yodeling to my ears.

He would've only been 29 or so at that point. Probably the only one in the band still in his 20s back then. Perry was 34 or so at the time and the both Ross and Smitty were a couple of years older, if I recall correctly.

I almost expected him to morph into Mariah Carey there...I thought I might have to perform an exorcism on my computer.

That's why they call him The Voice!

The thing about Perry is that he keeps the POWER on clear to the end of whatever vocal acrobatic he is doing. He never sounds thin or like he is running out of steam.

Simply amazing!

You-all are very welcome!

This phrase came to me as I watched it (again) a moment ago:

It was actually THRILLING to see Steve Perry sing....because you NEVER KNEW how he would improv and have it slam you backwards into your seat.

...an art-form that's SERIOUSLY LACKING in today's singers.

Thank you Nora. I agree wholeheartedly with that quote. You never knew how Perry would sing a song. Somehow he stayed true to the studio version of the song but with a different twist each time he sang it.

When other singers change a song, I usually hate it, but with Perry it was one of the things that made him so special.

Ditto big time. This rox. I love that man, always will. No voice Ive ever heard before or since comes even close.

I dont understand how anyone could say his voice was gone in the 90s. I saw him in Chicago during the FTLOSM tour. He had total voice that nite. Then I watch the "I Stand Alone" video. That was what--97? The Voice is incredible there.

It was great watching this again...Thanks,Nora! :)

The entire Japan concert was awesome, although it looked like the guys weren't too comfortable on stage together.Just think of the Houston '81 show and then this one...I tend to believe that Herbie had a good reason to say Journey was "over" around 1983...The chemistry, that is...

Thank Nora
Worth turning of the speakers for...

His voice lifts you out of your seat
Almost out of your body into the sky
& for a few minutes you fly free
upon the wings of sheer vocal high

Perry's voice back then was something amonst the better creation Gods released on planet Earth.
But I'm one who strongly believes Perry lost part of his immense range after 1986 (maybe even during ROR sessions).
I heard 2 bootlegs of 1994, and every Journey song has been tuned down to fit his then current vocal range. Things could have even gotten worse today...
Cheers

Thank you so much Nora, I had the worst day and so stressed and when I watched this it was like I just had an hour full body massage, the relaxation from his voice is incredible. I just can't believe he doesn't do this anymore in front of audiences, but that is his decision and I'll just keep watching youtube.com, geez..

Just watched the live DVD start to finish. You know that thread where Deano went totally bonkers over Perry's performance?

Yeah. It's like that.

What happened on the stage with those guys was just sheer alchemy, and Perry's voice was the gold. Wonder if he had to get air-traffic clearance for some of those soaring notes?

Nora, I was thinking about that video from Quest for Camelot, do you think he made that video because of the song and title 'I stand Alone" for more reasons than one, kind of a statement after they broke up. Why doesn't he make another one?!
