Tall Stories

Just listened to Wild on the Run and Sister of Mercy - Thanks, Larry.

Augeri actually sounds good on these songs. I understand the dream of singing in Journey, but why he thought he could imitate Perry's range is beyond me. They should have NEVER expected Augeri to sing like Perry, and he should have NEVER expected to be able to do so. After a while, surely he thought "ummm, I can't do this anymore".

I have always liked Kiss Me Softly. Augeri's lower voice is great. He sounds so relaxed - not hoarse and thin and out of breath like he does trying to sing like Perry. He sounds great on the two songs above.

He ruined what he had trying to imitate THE VOICE. It's a shame, too. I really like what I hear with Tall Stories.

I think Neal and Jon were sincere originally when they said they wanted someone who could sing the classics in the original style while helping the band move forward. But then the faced the reality during touring and backed down from that...

Listen to Walking Away From The Edge....another "lower voice" vocal that gets no credit.

The problem is Perry is one of a kind. Augeri who is a great singer was over come by having to handle this, IMO. NOw Augeri could do it, but it tore his voice up at times. They should have changed the keys down a peg or two. This would have worked fine. As on Tall Stories Augeri at that range, would have been good enough and within his range to do Journey. But sadly they wanted it way up there-ERIC

Augeri could hit the Perry notes... BUT over and over and over and over again. Too many shows toasted his voice.
Listen to the earlier boots of him. They're great.

You aren't going to turn this into a spectacle, so if you have nothing positive to say, get out. You obviously didn't read the entire thread.

Quit trying to turn everything into controversy. Geeze

Positive? Like all the "positive" shit you were posting about Augeri last night? Now all of the sudden you want to hear more of his stuff? Just more weirdness from you.

I think that could be true. I don't know everything that happened, but if Steve A. did not take "proper" care of his voice during the earlier years of his career - trying to sing the Journey catalog could take a toll in a hurry. I heard fairly early on that he had gotten a vocal coach, so that probably helped some, but damage was done, too. I am a teacher and talk all day I can tell you that my voice is not what it was a few years ago. And that's just dealing with 8 year olds all day - not performing for thousands!! Just my 2 cents.

Steve took GREAT care of his voice (I know this for a fact) but that amount of touring will toast anybody's voice using that range. I actually fear for JSS's voice as well. 3 hour shows last year definitely didn't help.

Neal, I am going to ignore all of your posts for eternity from here on out.

(This space edited because I have more class than that moron).

Have a nice life.

Why should it get credit? It's an average song at best.

Journey is about superb vocals, and sadly, there haven't been any for the last 3-4 years.

My public apologies for trashing Augeri as relentlessly as I did.

I really did take it too far.

Regardless of how I feel, there are some things that just go too far and I feel I stepped over the line.

You're going overboard.
Augeri may have been an imperfect live singer, but everything done in the studio sounds superb.

Augeri didn't even "sing" until an hour or so into the 3-hour show.
The first hour or so was devoted to the pre-Perry days.
And even then, his songs were intersperesed with vocal turns by Jon, Neal, Ross, and even Deen.

One of the better songs since Augeri joined the band, in my opinion and perhaps my second favorite after "Livin' to Do".

What's THAT tell you? Augeri should never have tried to play on this level. He knows it too.

Umm...No, not necessarily. You may be able to make an average singer sound better but a truly bad singer will still sound like a bad singer.
