The magnitude of this requires its own thread ...great performance, just one "flat" note, just before the solo (same note he was flat on, in the recent boots that have been posted.... that note is obviously just outta range...think he should "modify" the line)

Gotta say, if this is "totally" live, the guy has my vote completely

I'm worried though - sounds like he's straining a little on the choruses, or is that just me? I'd hate for him to knacker his vocal cords and get nodules because parts of the songs are too high for him.
Would fans really mind if the keys were transposed down just a little bit? Would they? REALLY? A semi tone or a tone could make all the difference to his vocal health.

You could be right.
The choruses do not sound so good, do they? Whomever is resposible.


EDIT - on a second listen, yep its the guy who is singing slightly lower on the chorus that is throwing it out. Ouch!

I reiterate what I said about JSS - he's a rocker! And very very exciting!

I agree. Like I said b4, I don't like the backing vocals on this. But JSS rox on it.

Now is that "head voice" u singers write about here? I listened 4 times & some of the notes sound like they're at the top of his range tho. He's not straining, but reaching. Am I right? Or talking out my ass?

I'm no singer either but I feel exactly the same as you. He's getting those notes but there's not the effortlessness you get with Perry. As good as Jeff sounds here, listening to it I didn't feel as though he could sing a bunch of songs in that key night after night without something having to give.

Which is why I said in my earlier post that I was worried.
I'm a great believer in having stuff in a key which is comfortable.
Night after night in a key which is either slightly out of your range, or which is not effortless would have an effect - long term.
I like his sound. I like that he is different from Perry. I like that he ROCKS.
But I hear a bit of 'reaching' for the notes here, too. That was a great way of describing it IMO.
This is why I'm a fan of knocking the key down a tiny bit for him on certain songs.
I don't think many people would actually notice the drop in key too much.
But that's just my opinion.
They will do what they like in the end won't they.
But he seems to have a strong character, and I believe that if he feels he is having to 'reach' certain notes, and that if he feels that will have a detrimental effect on his voice, he will stand up for himself and sort the problem out - whatever has to be done to sort it.
Two singers who have allegedly 'blown' their voices doing these songs has got to make him cautious.
I think he can do the job.
But I vote to lower some keys a tiny bit for him.

Couldn't agree more with everything you say Susie, specially the part about Jeff seeming to be a much more forceful character. Like you, I don't think he'll leave it until it's too late as far as his voice is concerned. Although in the light of recent events, I shouldn't think he'd encounter too much (if any) resistance from the band at any voice-preserving measures he suggests - they're not going to risk losing another singer.

Surely hindsight has taught them all something.

Too many gigs in a row combined with travelling miles to and from them = nightmare for the lead vocalist in the long term.
Too many songs in 'uncomfortable' keys = nightmare for the lead vocalist in the long term.
Lead vocalist suffering problems = nightmare for the band.

There are measures they can take to prevent a repeat of history.
Let's hope they take 'em.

Yes, let's hope so. The main problem as I see it is the mighty dollar - they never seem to be able to turn down a gig. They've already extended the tour to what seems like infinity (!) so it'll be interesting to see how Jeff holds up.

Ok, he sounds kick-ass here, and it sounds journeyesque enough for me (except the band) so when was this performed? If he can bring it for these guys, can he bring it for journey? If yes, where are some boots of him sounding this good with journey?

Cool performance, but like someone said, this is at the edge of his range. Night after night of this, plus the other 75 mins of the set, and boy.... we r gonna see our third singer off.

Think the sound mix helped Jeff in this clip, his vocals are heard very clearly, unlike with Journey, where , for some reason, lately, they like to bury the lead vocals amongst the music far too often..... hiding something I feel!

heres a "pull" from "on the road" last gig reviews, and I didnt have to trawl very far to find it!
