Who would have the best chance at a top 40 hit?

I know SP ain't coming back to Journey. This is just an opinion-based fun poll ok? Don't get all serious on me. Just vote on which option u think would have the best chance at a top 40 hit & say why if u care to. Leave it at that.

NOTE: I deliberately left out Journey w/SA as they already tried and didn't succeed so there's no point repeating that.

I don't think any of the above-mentioned selections will ever have a top 40 hit again. I hope I am wrong but that's the safe bet.

Perry already has made MANY hits with Journey, as he did with his solo music too, so if he chose to do another solo cd, he's definitely GOT "what it takes" to make a hit! :D

Perry, definitely. But it would probably be a schmaltzy ballad, thus I think I'd probably dig the JSS Journey better, at this point.

Is "schmaltzy" actually a word?

It is the writing combination of Rolie, Cain, Schon and Perry that made the Journey HITS! :P

"Who would have the best chance" is the actual question.. hmm.. I think Journey w/JSS is the answer out of the options provided. We all know SP ain't gonna be with Journey ever again.

Yes, it was definitely the writing team of Perry , Schon, Cain & Rolie that all contributed to those wonderful hits in Journey, but NOW Perry & Rolie are gone, so that leaves me to believe that's the reason Journey didn't make any more hits with Augeri as front singer. :P

I think JSS is A LOT BETTER singer than Augeri, so we'll just have to wait & see what JSS can do with Journey.

Journey with Perry.

Perry alone, as well - if I were to have 2 votes. Oh Sherri was huge, and You Better Wait got lots of airplay here in Knoxville. I still hear "Strung Out" occasionally.

Perry with Journey is best, but Perry alone makes waves as well.

when you think "Journey" you think of Steve Perry with Schon and Cain, he's the best!

Voted Perry, he did it with Oh,sherrie & Foolish Heart.

But as the Classic Journey Fan that I am I would say that Journey would have a better chance if it was SP / Journey 8)

I don't want Perry back in Journey, BUT, along with Perry comes the monetary muscle of the industry.
If Perry returned there'd be a huge media push and naturally, a charting single.
This has nothing to do with musical quality either.
I think the post-Perry era has put out some very quality tunes.

None of the above. Music has changed.

However, if any version of Journey went on American Idol then yes. That is where the industry is at.

Period, end of stop.

Any hits off "For the Love of Strange Medicine"? Nope, I don't think so.

Perry would equal ticket sales at this point. For ONE tour. After that, the shine goes away. Think Kiss reunion tour.

Everyone, we listen to dinosours. FACE IT. That's ok though. We like the best music with the most staying power. That's why these bands still sell tickets, but not records. It's all good. :)

After hearing this, maybe new material is better left on the shelves?

After hearing this, that makes a musician want to go and record something new... maybe new material is better left on the shelves?

It is unfortunate, but true. Radio does not want 50 somethings new material. Go ask Gene Simmons why Kiss hasn't done any new studio work since 98. Music is a young person's game. That's just a fact. There are some minor exceptions, but that is just the way it is.

Also, you have to be "pretty". One of my favorite 90's artists is Jann Arden. Great songs, great voice, but she is heavyset and not photogenic, so she is screwed.

Journey are now what Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons were when I was a kid and my parents liked them. Do the math. The sooner people take their blinders off and enjoy whatever bands like Journey, Styx and Foreigner do now the better. Be happy these bands tour AT ALL. And ANY new music is just a fantastic bonus.

I'm right.

At first I thought Journey with Steve Perry. then I reminded myself that it is 2006 - so I chose the bottom option, without a doubt. Too late, too late, too late, too late to make a change... !

No more hits, ever again. (I think thats pretty safe to say).

Good luck with that. No, I believe arrivalrules is just stating a fact. Actually, until he is proven wrong! then you can say he is wrong. Also! if you don't believe him, where have you all been? under a rock or somthin. Take a look out side in the real world, yeah go to youre local music shop maybe turn on the television... youre answers are as clear as day.

Thanks for coming.

The question was who WOULD have the best chance, not who WILL bust into the top forty. It is a fun poll. No one is expecting to hear new stuff on the radio.

Also, as I stated above, You Better Wait got airplay when FLOSM came out both here (Knoxville) and in Chattanooga. Not sure about other areas, but since DJs don't pick their songs I am sure it did as well. I never said it was a hit, but it did get radio time in regular circulation for a while. I never heard anything off Arrival.

In that case, I still stand by the very last poll option.

Thanks Vladan, just stating a fact. And Distant Voice, I wish I WAS wrong.

QUESTION: Would anyone buy new material from Steve Perry?

Yes of course I would. Doesn't mean it would make a dent on the charts though. I support Journey, Styx, REO, Cheap Trick, Kiss, Night Ranger, I'll buy it.

Def Leppard used to be multi platinum, now they are happy with whatever "Yeah" sold. It was poor in comparison to their heyday. See what I mean? They have their original lead singer and it doesn't matter.

Well certainly Perry fronted Journey would have the best chance. The public is so fickle. Arrival deserved to be a megahit, but wasn't. With a record company push and not telling the general public who was singing - it's a monster. Oh yeah, make sure it's released in 1986 instead of what, 2001?

There are many albums like that. The new Paul Stanley solo album has 8 viable radio friendly hits on it, and if it does anything chartwise I will most likely have a coronary.

But the DL album did get to No 14 on the Billboard chart this year, didn't it?

And what about Aerosmith? Jaded reached number 7 on the Billboard 100 in 2001 - and in 2004 they got to number 7 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

The "times have changed" argument is true up to a point - but it often seems to be used to excuse the mediocrity of the releases themselves.

Take TBF...boy, had times changed in 1996 compared to 1986...but Journey still sold a million.

Times had changed in 1998 too...and when KISS released Psycho Circus it was their highest charting album ever.

So despite the dominance of rap and r'n'b and pretty pop stars and reality show contestants...the oldsters can still have hit records whatever the current fashions happen to be.

Which is why I reckon Journey can hit the charts...but only if Steve Perry decided to rescue this band from the doldrums.

High chart postions do not equal success. That is all soundscan stuff. Kiss Revenge charted at #9, what did it sell in the end? Not much.

I think Leppard did chart at #14, but are floundering around 200,000 copies sold - pathetic! (that could be more or less, that is an admitted guess. Go check the sales for X and Slang though - awful)

Soundscan shows loyal following of bands rushing out on the Tuesday (when all records hit the stores). Watch the drop in the second week of sales - it is dramatic for bands like these.

Aerosmith is one of those bands who are a slight exception because they sold there souls. MTV darlings, and even they are not the mega hit band they have been recently. Honking on a Bobo wasn't a smash by any stretch. Needed Kiss to go on tour and Kiss outsold them at the merchandise table 3 to 1.

I am more hardcore on this topic than Deano is on Tapegate. Forget hits. Ain't happenin.

Bring it on.

I'm sure you are hardcore on this topic...the "times have changed" argument excuses the failure of the Steve Augeri era...and keeps the denial going strong no matter far Journey travel downhill.

You say "Arrival" was a commercial disappointment in 2001 because "times have changed". Well, "Crush" by Bon Jovi sold 7.5 million albums wordwide in 2001 and it went double-platinum in the US...whereas "Arrival" sold 250,000.

I noticed you dodged my TBF example...the mid-1990s was a disastrous time for the classic rock/AOR scene because alternative/complaint rock was at it's height...and 80s nostalgia hadn't yet kicked in. Despite this Journey - as we all know - sold one million albums (750,000 more than "Arrival" did) and were nominated for as Grammy...

As for Soundscan....well, this applies to pretty pop acts and rap stars too. It's easier to chart high with a low-selling release for any act of any age in any genre.

Let's not forget about DVD sales...the KISS Second Coming DVD went double platinum in the late 1990s (twenty years after the band's commercial peak) and the Journey Greatest Hits DVD went platinum...

How many did the 2001 Vegas DVD sell? I suspect that it was considerably lower...which again was surely a reflection of the weakness of the Augeri line-up rather than "the times".
